WHAT ABOUT TIMESTAR?
Some of you may have noticed the lead story in November 84
edition of Syntax, mailed out a few weeks ago, titled "Is
Timestar a Darkstar?".
Many of our readers do not know what is Timestar or have heard
about Trinity Magnum Corporation (TMC). We had hoped to have a
story to run this month about TMC but it didn’t develop enough
to be printed even though we held up publishing till the 15th of
March for it. In its’ place we are going over the background of
TMC and what they hope to accomplish.
In late Feburary 1984, soon after Timex Computer Corporation
< TCC) announced their withdrawl from the home computer market,
TMC started researching the small third party companies that
Here still supporting Timex-Sinclair Products. About 57
companies agreed with Dave Higginbottom that the Timex Sinclair
Line of computers was too good to let die and they said they
would be interested in seeing what Dave could do about it.
From them till August Dave worked and reworked his business
plans until they ready for submittion to TCC. TCC liked the plan
and signed a letter of intent with Dave to sell the rights of
their models to TMC.
In December 1983 TMC became a legal Corporation in the state
California. The Board of Directors appointed Dave Higginbottom
as Chief Excetive Officer with full control of the Corporation.

What is TimeStar? (can’t)
A California based inventrnent banker, Wall Street Futures, has
agreed to locate funding that would be required to startup
operations and back a acquisition program of a major disk drive
company, a major hard disk company, a printer mfg., several
small software companies and the TS 2068 and TS 1500 rights from
TCC. By the end of Feburary 1984 the two disk companies has
signed a agreement in principle with TMC.
Dave’s plans are to setup a franchise-style chain of
dealerships called "Little Computers Stores" with the owners
having limited partnerships in TMC. The stores would not only
feature the Sinclair BASIC compatable models but would also
carry over 2000 software titles of compatable programs. The
stores would also be a focal point for user’s groups and just
plain old-fashion help for the Timex, Sinclair, Timestar, or
Timepro owners.
The store would feature 4 new models called Timestar and
Timepro. Timestar is a 128K home version of the TS 2068 with an
improved keyboard. Timepro is a Business version with 512K of
memory, and a new keyboard, already in production, with 96 keys
in a IBM PC like case. Included is a 16 key pad with numeric
functions, 8 special functions keys for cursor control, delete,
and edit plus 15 programmable functions keys. It will use
Sinclair One-touch BASIC, but can be reprogrammed in CPM, Forth,
C and Pascel via ROM cartridges. The Operation systems for most
major brands of home computers, on Cartridges would enable
‘ irnestar and Timepro to run their software programs.
I asked Dave how soon we could expect to see all this
available. His reply was 60 to 90 days after the completion of
the acquisition program.
The next step for Dave is to get the loan needed to get things
rolling. He is hard at work with Wall Street Futures who is
talking to several interested venture capital lenders.
He indicated to me the signs are good that TMC will suceed in
the near future and we at TSS wish him luck.
EDITORS NOTES:
First TSS would like to say we are sorry for the delay in
getting the newsletter out this month. As we stated in the lead
story we were waiting for a major press release from Trinity
Magnum. They on the other hand were not ready to release it.
Several new products appeared this month. First the Wafadrive
from DAMCE/Rotronics is featured on pages 10-11. Also Z-Link an
TS 2068/Spectrum Buss interface from T.E.J. Computers in Los
Angeles and other major dealers. A great new book for all the
Timex Sinclair line on interfacing projects to your computer
titled -Powerfull Projects With Your Timex Sinclair" by Jim
Stephens is available from TSS for *12.95 plus *2.00 shipping.

EDITORS NOTES (Con’t)
This book, written for the beginner, includes instructions to
controlling a number of electrical applications like appliances,
Weather Stations, Robotics, and feedback projects. It even
explains the use of the IN and OUT commands on the TS 2068, a
feature which has puzzled many users. Author Jim Stephens has
promised to do some articles for TSS Newsnotes in the future.
Another new product on the market is D. Lip inski Softwares’
Buyers Guide to Sinclair - Timex Products Bi Services for $20.00.
This fine source of product information is like our TS Users’
Guidebook except it is sequenced by dealer and ours is by
product. The Buyers Guide is available from D. Lipinski Software
2737 Susquehanna Road, Rosy In, PA 19001 USA.
Available to Professional Programmers is the new QL technical
Guide. This Guide describes methods of doing machine code
programs on the QL. It is available from Sinclair Research Ltd.
50 Staniford St. Suite #800, Boston, MA. 02114 for $20.00 per
copy. The QL Technical Manual is designed be used with a 68008
assembly language technical reference.
We at TSS are somewhat disappointed at the response from our
readers. To assist you TSS has started using Readers Service
Cards (RSC) in this issue. These simple to use card allows you
to vote for the best article each month, get more information of
products from dealers and answer the questions TSS sometime need
answered to contine the type of support you need. The RS Card,
which should be between pages 2 and 3, is self-addressed and
only requires you fill out the blocks on the back, the return
address on the front and add a $.14 stamp to mail. As you read
through the articles you will note the articles to vote for have
a RSC and number after the title. Ads have a number at the end
of their display. By circle the number on the card you can vote
for the best article each month or get more information from the
dealers who handle that product. You too can get in the fun by
submitting your favorate orginal program or article to TSS. We
have a nice gift for the best one each month. Votes must be
postmarked by the 10th of the April to count.
We as TSS ask for your patience as we have just mover to a
bigger office. Some of your orders may be delayed because of
this move. The TS 2068/Spectrum Users’ Guidebook that so many of
you have on backorder will be available soom. For members with
Plan A or C shipment is automatic so keep us informed of any
change of address with the membership form on the last two pages
of this newsletter. We are sending a Free sample of the
newsletter if you are not a member to keep the address current
until the Guidebook is available. The Guidebook will be shipped
in sections as each major grouping is completed to all due-out
orders and automatic distribution. Some members have been
sending an extra $5.00 for the Guidebook. This is not necessary
unless you want both the TS 1000/1500/2X80/81 version and the TS
2068/Spectrum version. TSS ask that you hold off on sending
orders for the TS1000/1500/2X80/81 version of the guidebook
until it is announced as ready in this newsletter.
No room for the QL column this month so see you next month.

LOOKOUT AfiiJ HERE COMES WAFADRIVE
DAMCO Enterprises has announced the introduction o-f the
DAMCO/Rotronics Wafadrive System or Wafadrive for short. What is
Wa-f ad r i ve?
It is an extremely versatile, system -for the TS 2068, with five
major components housed in one unit. Wafadrive has just been
selected Peripheral of the year in England. The first component
is a dual- thats two- wafer drives using the same wafers that A
& J offers, but with better usage. Each wafer will store 16K,
64K, or 128K of data as compared to A k J versions which store
14K, 49K, and 85K. The read/write BUAD is also about 7K faster
than the A & J Model L2000. Wafadrive speed is about 18000 BUAD
or 2K per second.
The second component is a Built-in Centronics Parallel port
which requires a $12.95 cable to connect to any parallel printer
using a standard 36-way Amphenol connector.
The third component is a built-in
selectable BAUD rate from 75 to
available for $12.95 to connect
connector.
RS 232 Serial port
19,200. A cable is
to any standard "D"
with
al so
type
The forth component is a Spectrum compatable interface that
allows you to connect most Spectrum hardware to your TS 2068.
Of course to run the Spectrum hardware you need Doug Dewey’s
OMNI/EMU Spectrum emulator cartridge which is the fifth
component of the system. SPECTRUM ROM chips & ROMSWITCH will not
work. If you already have the OMMI/EMU Version of Doug’g
Emulator you will be given a discount price.
They didn’t stop there. Also included in the package is a free
word processer developed for Wafadrive called Spectral Writer. I
looked over the manual of this word processer and found it to be
better in some areas than Tasword Two which I use now for
everthing. Tasword Two may not work with Wafadrive because the
wafadrive interface has its own, built-in on EPROM, printer
driver program. Spectral Writer is a high legibility 64 column
screen, with 352 line capacity. It has most of the features of
Tasword Two Word Processer plus a redefinable codes and
character set, Tab stops and automatic page heading and page
numbering. The only time you need an additional printer driver
software is when you are using other than standard ASCII
characters or doing a screen dump or COPY.
Another advantage over the A Be J L2000 is the design of the
operating system commands. Wafadrive uses command that are more
commona11y found on a floppy disk or Sinclair Microdrive system.
When saving a program the operating system will look at the size
of the program and place it in the next available space on the
wafer that can contain that size program. The A tc J does saving
sequentially, but if you resave a modified file you may
overwrite part of the next program. (Con’t next page.)

Wafadrive (Can’t)
Wafadrive is widely known in Europe with over 10,000 units sold
for the Spectrum already.
Is it posible to transfer programs from tape to wafedrive? you
ask. Broadly speaking yes! With your BASIC programs the process
is very simple. Just LOAD the program and SAVE on the Wafadrive.
Copying some commercially produced software is not so simple.
Problem can occur when the program uses more that 37.7K of
memory as a few Spectrum programs do. Most professional
programmers go to great lengths to protect their likelihood and
you can’t blame them for that. DAMCO is currently looking at the
LERM system, a utility that comes with a 45 page manual for
comverting programs to Wafadrive. More about that in later
editions. There is no magical or satisfactory "universal"
software transposer for the above commerial and techinal
reasons. By contacting the authors of the program a modification
of the program may be available or they may be willing to create
one.
The botton line of this system over the A & J is price. The
complete system sells for only $229.95. The price is much better
than the Flopy disk interface available soon from $400. to
$455.00. The below chart showes the price difference between the
A Ik J L2000 with comparable componets and Wafadrive.

What software is available for the Wafadrive now? Currently
there is a range of titles available including several games and
utilities. The list is growing, but of notable interest are the
superb 2APP machine code development package from Hewson and the
Spectral Filer and Calc programs from Softek in the U.K. these
program are file-compatible with Spectral Writer free word
processer that comes free with the Wafadrive.
The Wafadrive is only compatable with the TS 2068 or Spectrum,
but you TS 1000/1500 and ZX 81 owners can still use the L1000
from A 6c J. (See releated story page 11) .
The Wafadrive will only be sold by DAMCO Enterprises 67 Bradley
Ct. Fall River, MA 02720. An in-depth review is planned tor a
later issue of TSS Newsnotes. Circle Reader Service Car4 « 4

A8cJ STRING FLOPPY MANUAL ADENDUM
This information is provided as a supplement to the first issue
of the A 8c J Microdrive L2000 String Floppy System Manual.
The Enterpo tapes have a numbered printed on the permanent label
directly below the "o" in Enterpo. This number is the number of
feet of tape inside.
More than 9 files can be saved on the enterpo wafers by
following the character set chart in your TS 2068 owners manual.
To save the 10th file use next character after the 9 which is :.
To save the 11th file use next character after the : which is ;.
To save the 12th file use next character after the ; which is <.
To save the 13th file use next character after the < which is =.
To save the 14th file use next character after the = which is >.
To save the 15th file use next character after the > which is ?.
If you purchase a second drive to plug into the interface you
C3ri select which drive you wish to use from your keyboard or
program by entering POKE 24201,x. x must be equal to 0 for the
primary disk drive on slot 0 or equal to 1 to use the second
drive. When the system is turned on the system will default to
drive # 0.
A 8c J will also furnish a schehmatic for those first units that
were shipped without one. See your Owners manual for address.
If you wish to use the printer port on the top of the interface
you must first purchase a kit from A 8c J which includes
software, cable and hardware. The cost is *39.95 and it should
be available soon.
A & J is currently working on converting the drive provided with
the L1000 unit, for the TS 1000/1500 to make it comparable with
the interface provided with the L2000 unit for the TS 2068. This
will elimate the need for two types of wafers. A 8c J now has the
manufacturing rights for the L1000 version of the string floppy
wafer, so a good supply of them are available. For those of you
that have the TS 1000 or TS 1500 Computers the L1000 String
Floppy Disk drive system at *169.95 is an excellent way to get
away from the common cassette tape problems of slow speed and
tape head misaligment we all face from time to time. The L1000
may be special ordered through T.S. Services. A nice selection
of programs are available on the L1000 wafers.

CONVENTION FOR TS USERS? RSC 2-1
TO? is looking into the possibility o-f a convention for TS
Owners one weekend this summer, in late June, July or August 85.
We hope to interest some dealers in setting up displays of their
products. Timex Sinclair Authors would be invited to lecture on
the computer. The site o-f the convention would be the new
convention center in Chattanooga, TN. Chattanooga was chosen
because of the many attractions in the area, and it is
centeral1y located, (about 1 day travel or 900 miles), for over
half of the users in the National TS Users’ Network.
If you would like to attend, please complete line 2 on the
Reader Service Card with the weekend that would be best for you.
The final decision rests on your response to this notice.
Users’ Groups are encouraged to check on group travel rates for
their club. The convention will be open to all with an interest
in Sinclair or Timex-Sinc1 air products that wish to attend.
We want to keep the cost low, and that will be based on the
number of persons attending, so the more that can make it the
better f or all.
Any person who wishes to help in this project are encouraged to
call T.S. Services during our nornal work hours from 1-8 PM
Monday through Friday (EST) or Saturday 1-5 PM at (615)877-6328.
