This paper is a report on experimental thesis work which investigated phase locking of a reflex klystron with a more stable microwave source. A discussion of the characteristics and components of a phase-locked loop and a qualitative overview of the theory of phase-locked loop operation is included. The specific circuit which accomplished phase locking at approximately 9.1 GHZ is described, with particular emphasis on the use of a crystal mixer to provide the phase-sensitive feedback voltage...

A series of micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) based devices for acoustic direction finding have been designed and fabricated which mimic the aural system of the Ormia ochracea fly and its extraordinary directional sensitivity. To overcome the minimal spatial separation between its ears, a flexible hinge mechanically couples the fly's two tympanic membranes. Because of this coupling, the phase differences due to the time difference of arrival (TDOA) are greatly amplified and sound source...

The passive accelerometer system (PAS) is a simple moving ball accelerometer capable of measuring the small magnitude steady relative acceleration that occurs in a low earth orbit spacecraft due to atmospheric drag and the earth's gravity gradient. The accelerometer can be used when the spacecraft continuously rotates during the orbit such that some line of reference in the craft always points along the vector connecting the earth's mass center with the spacecraft mass center. PAS was used...

Parametric excitation can occur when the value of a parameter of an oscillator is modulated at twice the natural frequency of the oscillator. The response grows exponentially and is only limited by a nonlinearity of the system, so large response amplitudes typically occur. However, there is no response unless the parametric drive amplitude is above a threshold value that is dictated by the damping. We investigate parametric excitation in three physical systems. The first involves an acoustic...

Oxygen isotope compositions of bulk chondrules and their mineral separates in type 3 ordinary chondrites (UOC) show several % variability in the oxygen three isotope diagram with slope of approx.0.7 [1]. In contrast, ion microprobe analyses of olivine and pyroxene phenocrysts in ferromagnesian chondrules from LL 3.0-3.1 chondrites show mass dependent isotopic fractionation as large as 5% among type I (FeO-poor) chondrules, while type II (FeO-rich) chondrules show a narrow range (less than or...

A new generation of inexpensive GPS receivers is emerging, which utilize temperature compensated crystal oscillators (TCXO) as clocks. The MX4200 has been chosen as a representative sample of this emerging technology receiver. A detailed discussion on the receiver architecture and its implications in the measurement process is given. Experiments on the sensitivity of its clock to environmental effects, as well as the duration of the transient regime are described. One limitation to the use of...

The experimental results on the tubes equipped with 4 interdigital lines mounted in parallel were not satisfactory. These negative results were thought to be due to the existence of several parasitic modes. Efforts were then switched to the following problems: (1) complementary tests on interdigital lines, essentially centered on propagation and the parasitic modes so as to understand better the behaviour of the circuits mounted in parallel, and (2) study of a new water cooled tube. A linear...

The objective of the project is to develop an acoustic modeling capability, based on commercial off-the-shelf software, to be used as a tool for oversight of the future manned Constellation vehicles to ensure compliance with acoustic requirements and thus provide a safe and habitable acoustic environment for the crews, and to validate developed models via building physical mockups and conducting acoustic measurements.

We report on the results of experiments to characterizing the performance of high quality crystal oscillators. The sensitivity of the crystals to temperature and humidity were investigated. This information was used to design hermetically sealed vessels to stabilize both temperature and humidity in an effort to improve the long term frequency stability of the crystals. Preliminary data from these tests are presented.

Performance of "lights 3" by Colin Helb. The performances of the "lights" series feature a three-voice oscillator built on a prototyping "breadboard" to allow for mid-performance manipulation of parts and wiring. The pitch and timbre of the three voices are controlled independently by light-sensitive photocells. All signals are run into a four channel mixer which feeds a series of effect pedals and are run back into channel four of the mixer. The performance...
