A new meal supporting system for disabled people who cannot eat foods by themselves has developed in this laboratory. It was succeeded to create prototype of the meal supporting system which has four concepts: “safe”, “reliable”, “comfortable” and “a sense to eat foods by oneself”. However, the prototype was not good at spooning up foods. It is necessary to derive the suitable speed and torque of rotation of spoon. In order to determine the rotational motion of spoon, the...

The radio emission from dMe flare stars is discussed using Very Large Array and Arecibo observations as examples. Active flare stars emit weak, unpolarized, quiescent radio radiation that may be always present. Although thermal bremsstrahlung and/or thermal gyroresonance radiation account for the slowly-varying, quiescent radio radiation of solar active regions, these processes cannot account for the long-wavelength quiescent radiation observed from nearby dMe flare stars. It has been...

The ambiguity-resolution problem for a Distance Measuring Equipment (DME), using four independent modulation frequencies in the 500-kc region, is described in mathematical terms. The method is developed for a DME model with decimal modula tion frequency relationships and then applied to the actual system whose modulation frequencies are related by binary numbers. Finally, two digital-computer routines providing for both ambiguity resolution and accuracy increase by averaging over the four phase...

Van is used by Land Inventory Systems to measure and map property for tax assessment purposes. It is adapted from navigation system of the Lunar Rover wheeled vehicle in which moon-exploring astronauts traveled as much as 20 miles from their Lunar Module base. Astronauts had to know their precise position so that in case of emergency they could take the shortest route back. Computerized navigational system kept a highly accurate record of the directional path providing continuous position...

Electronic system can rapidly determine location of lightning strikes occurring within 30 km range. Longer distances are also determined, but with reduced accuracy. Studies have shown that lightning bolt emits electromagnetic wavefront; distance to lightning is determined from ratio of magnetic to electric field.

The Clogeos (Close-Grid Geodynamic Measurement System) concept, a complete range or range-rate measurement terminal installed in a satellite in a near-polar orbit with a network of relatively simple transponders or retro-reflectors on the ground at intervals of 0.1 to 10 km was reviewed. The distortion of the grid was measured in three dimensions to accuracies of + or - 1 cm with important applications to geodynamics, glaciology, and geodesy. User requirements are considered, and a typical...

The reliable detection of an object of interest in an input image with arbitrary background clutter and occlusion has to a large extent remained an elusive goal in computer vision. Traditional model-based approaches are inappropriate for a multi-class object detection task primarily due to difficulties in modeling arbitrary object classes. Instead, we develop a detection framework whose core component is a nearest neighbor search over object parts. The performance of the overall system is...

Several features make Java an attractive choice for High Performance Computing (HPC). In order to gauge the applicability of Java to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), we have implemented the NAS (NASA Advanced Supercomputing) Parallel Benchmarks in Java. The performance and scalability of the benchmarks point out the areas where improvement in Java compiler technology and in Java thread implementation would position Java closer to Fortran in the competition for CFD applications.

Precise geodetic measurements are proposed in which an orbiting laser obtains intersite distance between retroreflectors 25 to 100 km apart on the ground. The recommended area is a rectangle 200 by 400 km in southern California and adjacent Nevada, trending northeast. It includes the entire width of the San Andreas fault zone, the Garlock fault, the thrust faults of the Transverse Ranges, and the active strike-slip faults of the Mojave Desert.

The use of lunar photography to obtain geodetic connections on the earth's surface has great advantages over the occultation and solar eclipse methods. The success of this method depends upon the accuracy with which a point on the moon's surface can be measured relative to the background of stars. The observational problem is a difficult one, but experiments now being carried out at the U. S. Naval Observatory should indicate whether the method of lunar photography is feasible for geodetic...
