I made this simple optical drive enclosure. I removed the optical drive from my MacBook and replaced it with the iFixit optical drive HD caddy, leaving me with a SATA cable and the original optical drive to use externally. This is set up to be used with a standard optical drive without any face on it, and an iFixit SATA cable (but I'm sure other SATA cables would fit into the port). I printed it with text on the top but the font wasn't bold enough to make a good connection so I uploaded the top...

This widespread brandless, nameless Chinese floppy disk drive is sold under various brand names around the world, also sometimes found under no name whatsoever. While it is usually plug-and-play, it requires drivers to work under Windows 9x and old versions of Mac OS and Windows NT. This is an image of the bundled mini CD with the required drivers and a PDF copy of the user manual, located in the eBest folder.

This an internal Apple memo with a matrix describing all the ways the various floppy drives made by Apple could be connected to their computers. It is dated September 8, 1982 and the “IIIr” mentioned probably refers to the revised Apple III released in late 1981. The “IIIe” probably means “III enhanced”, later released as the Apple III Plus. It also describes connections to the unreleased UniFile and DuoFile floppy disk drive products.

I took a internal disc drive from an old dell inspiron and turned it into a very usable external disc drive. The cable needed is a 7+6 pin sata to usb. Can be found for $7-8 dollars.
