information visualization is an emerging and powerful technique for understanding language. Online text visualization tools are immensely popular online for collaboration, analysis, and entertainment. Through our ethnographic research we have found that visualization is also an important tool for natural language engineers. In a synthesis of information visualization and natural language processing research, my thesis work has approached visualization of language from several perspectives,...

Spitzer space telescope observations led to the surprising detection of a diverse set of extragalactic sources whose infrared spectra are dominated by line emission of molecular hydrogen (H2). The absence or relative weakness of typical signs of star formation (like dust features, lines of ionized gas) suggest the presence of large quantities of H2 gas with no (or very little) associated star formation. We use the Stephan's Quintet (SQ) galaxy collision to define a physical framework to...

We investigate the clustering of afterglow light curves observed at X-ray and optical wavelengths. We have constructed a sample of 61 bursts with known distance and X-ray afterglow. GRB sources can be divided in three classes, namely optical and X-ray bright afterglows, optical and X-ray dim one s, and optically bright -X-ray dim ones. We argue that this clustering is related to the fireball total energy, the external medium density, the fraction of fireball energy going in relativistic...

It is shown that a nonrelativistic mechanical system involving a general nonrelativistic potential V(|r1-r2|) between point particles at positions r1 and r2 can be extended to a Lagrangian system which is invariant under Lorentz transformation through order v^2/c^2. However, this invariance requires the introduction of velocity-dependent and acceleration-dependent forces between particles. The textbook treatments of "relativistic mechanics" can be misleading; the discussions usually...

We present numerical N-body simulation studies of large-scale structure formation. The main purpose of these studies is to analyze the several models of dark matter and the role they played in the process of large-scale structure formation. We analyze in this work a flat cold dark matter dominated model known as the Santa Barbara cluster. We compare the results for this model using the standard Newtonian limit of general relativity with the corresponding results of using the Newtonian limit of...

Strong size and internal density evolution of early-type galaxies between z~2 and the present has been reported by several authors. Here we analyze samples of nearby and distant (z~1) galaxies with dynamically measured masses in order to confirm the previous, model-dependent results and constrain the uncertainties that may play a role. Velocity dispersion measurements are taken from the literature for 50 morphologically selected 0.8

We consider the quadratically semilinear wave equation on R^d, d>=3, equipped with a Riemannian metric. This metric is non-trapping and approaches the Euclidean metric polynomially at infinity. Using Mourre estimates and the Kato theory of smoothness, we obtain a Keel-Smith-Sogge type inequality for the linear equation. Thanks to this estimate, we prove long time existence (d=3) and global existence (d>3) for the nonlinear problem with small initial data.

Given its relatively low savings rate, the U.S. economy depends heavily on foreign capital inflows from countries with high savings rates (such as China) to help promote growth and to fund the federal budget deficit. China has intervened heavily in currency markets to limit the yuan's appreciation. As a result, China has become the world's largest and fastest growing holder of foreign exchange reserves (FER). China has invested a large share of its FER in U.S. securities, which, as of June...

In order to stabilize the behavior of noisy systems, confining it around a desirable state, an effort is required to suppress the intrinsic noise. This noise suppression task entails a cost. For the important case of thermal noise in an overdamped system, we show that the minimum cost is achieved when the system control parameters are held constant: any additional deterministic or random modulation produces an increase of the cost. We discuss the implications of this phenomenon for those...

We study effects of unparticle physics on muon g-2 and LFV tau decay processes. LFV interactions between the Standard Model sector and unparticles can explain the difference of experimental value of muon g-2 from the Standard Model prediction. While the same couplings generate LFV tau decay, we found that LFV coupling can be of O(0.1 ... 1) without conflict with experimental bounds of LFV tau decay if the scaling dimension of unparticle operator d_{U} > 1.6.

The photonuclear production of vector mesons in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions is investigated within the collinear approach using different parameterizations for the nuclear gluon distribution. The integrated cross section and the rapidity distribution for the $AA \to V AA$ ($V = J/\Psi, \Upsilon$) process are computed for energies of RHIC and LHC. A comparison with the recent PHENIX data on coherent production of $J/\Psi$ mesons is also presented. We demonstrate that the study of the...

We work over an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field. The o-minimal homotopy groups of a definable set are defined naturally using definable continuous maps. We prove that any two semialgebraic maps which are definably homotopic are also semialgebraically homotopic. This result together with the study of semialgebraic homotopy done by H. Delfs and M. Knebusch allows us to develop an o-minimal homotopy theory. In particular, we obtain o-minimal versions of the Hurewicz theorems and the...

Images made with the VLBA have resolved the region in a nearby radio galaxy, Pictor A, where the relativistic jet that originates at the nucleus terminates in an interaction with the intergalactic medium, a so-called radio galaxy hot spot. This image provides the highest spatial resolution view of such an object to date (16 pc), more than three times better than previous VLBI observations of similar objects. The north-west Pictor A hot spot is resolved into a complex set of compact components,...

We consider pairs of finitely presented, residually finite groups $P\hookrightarrow\G$ for which the induced map of profinite completions $\hat P\to \hat\G$ is an isomorphism. We prove that there is no algorithm that, given an arbitrary such pair, can determine whether or not $P$ is isomorphic to $\G$. We construct pairs for which the conjugacy problem in $\G$ can be solved in quadratic time but the conjugacy problem in $P$ is unsolvable. Let $\mathcal J$ be the class of super-perfect groups...

We prove upper pointwise estimates for the Bergman kernel of the weighted Fock space of entire functions in $L^2(e^{-2\phi})$ where $\phi$ is a subharmonic function with $\Delta \phi$ a doubling measure. We derive estimates for the canonical solution operator to the inhomogeneous Cauchy-Riemann equation and we characterize the compactness of this operator in terms of $\Delta \phi$.

We present the multi-wavelength study of those gamma-ray bursts observed by TAROT. These events are characterized by the presence at early time of a rising in their optical light curves lasting a few hundred of seconds. In one case (GRB 060904B), a flare occurs at similar time in the X-ray band, while in the other cases the X-ray light curves appear smooth during the optical rise. We investigate the possible nature of this behavior and conclude th at a multi-component emission is mandatory to...

The low-energy magnetic excitations of the noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si have been measured with inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal. Kondo-type spin fluctuations with an anisotropic wave vector dependence are observed in the paramagnetic state. These fluctuations do not survive in the antiferromagnetically ordered state below TN=2.2 K but are replaced by damped spin waves, whose dispersion is much stronger along the c-axis than in other directions. We study the dynamics of entanglement in continuous variable quantum systems (CVQS). Specifically, we study the phenomena of Entanglement Sudden Death (ESD) in general two-mode-N-photon states undergoing pure dephasing. We show that for these states, ESD never occurs. These states are generalizations of the so-called High NOON states, shown to decrease the Rayleigh limit of lambda to lambda/N, which promises great improvement in resolution of interference patterns if states with large N are...
