Pimp my text!! We've all seen those car and videogame ads with the pimped out chromed text effect. Guess what? You don't need to go out and pay professional designers thousands of dollars for it. All you need to invest is about 10 minutes and watch this episode of Pixel Perfect and see how easy it is to get that nice shiney sparkly chrome effect.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- A female greater scaup duck (right) follows her mate through the water on Kennedy Space Center. Normally found in Alaska and northern Canada, this species winters along the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coasts. KSC shares a boundary with the Merritt Island Wildlife Nature Refuge. The refuge is a habitat for more than 310 species of birds, 25 mammals, 117 fishes and 65 amphibians and reptiles. In addition, the Refuge supports 19 endangered or threatened wildlife...

The description is presented for the dependence of the indirect exciton condensate density at the ring as a function of the polar angle at zero temperature with the involvement of the processes of formation and recombination of the excitons. In particular, starting from the quasi one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a spatially uniform generating term, we derive an exact analytical solution yielding the fragmentation of an exciton ring which is probably observed in the experiments.

The rise of the social media sites, such as blogs, wikis, Digg and Flickr among others, underscores the transformation of the Web to a participatory medium in which users are collaboratively creating, evaluating and distributing information. The innovations introduced by social media has lead to a new paradigm for interacting with information, what we call 'social information processing'. In this paper, we study how social news aggregator Digg exploits social information processing to solve the...

The spatial Fourier spectrum of the electron density distribution in a finite 1D system and the distribution function of electrons over single-particle states are studied in detail to show that there are two universal features in their behavior, which characterize the electron ordering and the deformation of Wigner crystal by boundaries. The distribution function has a $\delta$-like singularity at the Fermi momentum $k_F$. The Fourier spectrum of the density has a step-like form at the...

We present a modified outer gap model to study the phase-resolved spectra of the Crab pulsar. A theoretical double peak profile of the light curve containing the whole phase is shown to be consistent with the observed light curve of the Crab pulsar by shifting the inner boundary of the outer gap inwardly to $\sim 10$ stellar radii above the neutron star surface. In this model, the radial distances of the photons corresponding to different phases can be determined in the numerical calculation....

From the observed oxygen-isotope shift of the mid-infrared two-magnon absorption peak of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6}$, we evaluate the oxygen-isotope effect on the in-plane antiferromagnetic exchange energy $J$. The exchange energy $J$ in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6}$ is found to decrease by about 0.9% upon replacing $^{16}$O by $^{18}$O, which is slightly larger than that (0.6%) in La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$. From the oxygen-isotope effects, we determine the lower limit of the polaron binding energy, which is...

Cherenkov gluons may be responsible for the asymmetry of dilepton mass spectra near rho-meson observed in experiment. They can be produced only in the low-mass wing of the resonance. Therefore the dilepton mass spectra are flattened there and their peak is slightly shifted to lower masses compared with the in-vacuum rho-meson mass. This feature must be common for all resonances.

Let $G$ be a locally compact group. Consider the C$^*$-algebra $C_0(G)$ of continuous complex functions on $G$, tending to 0 at infinity. The product in $G$ gives rise to a coproduct $\Delta_G$ on the C$^*$-algebra $C_0(G)$. A locally compact {\it quantum} group is a pair $(A,\Delta)$ of a C$^*$-algebra $A$ with a coproduct $\Delta$ on $A$, satisfying certain conditions. The definition guarantees that the pair $(C_0(G),\Delta_G)$ is a locally compact quantum group and that conversely, every...

We critically review our recent claims that it is possible to obtain a propellantless propulsion device similar to electrodynamic tethers by means of a closed wire partially shielded by a superconductor from the outer magnetic field. We find that such a device is not possible as it violates basic physical laws. Furthermore, we show what is the correct local picture for the currents distribution within the superconductor.

In a quantum computation with pure states, the generation of large amounts of entanglement is known to be necessary for a speedup with respect to classical computations. However, examples of quantum computations with mixed states are known, such as the deterministic computation with one quantum qubit (DQC1) model [Knill and Laflamme, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 5672 (1998)], in which entanglement is at most marginally present, and yet a computational speedup is believed to occur. Correlations, and not...

Compton scattering of X-rays in the bulk flow of the accretion column in magnetic cataclysmic variables (mCVs) can significantly shift photon energies. We present Monte Carlo simulations based on a nonlinear algorithm demonstrating the effects of Compton scattering on the H-like, He-like and neutral Fe K alpha lines produced in the post-shock region of the accretion column. The peak line emissivities of the photons in the post-shock flow are taken into consideration and frequency shifts due to...

Cosmological shock waves result from supersonic flow motions induced by hierarchical clustering of nonlinear structures in the universe. These shocks govern the nature of cosmic plasma through thermalization of gas and acceleration of nonthermal, cosmic-ray (CR) particles. We study the statistics and energetics of shocks formed in cosmological simulations of a concordance $\Lambda$CDM universe, with a special emphasis on the effects of non-gravitational processes such as radiative cooling,...

I apply a two-step density-matrix renormalization group method to the anisotropic two-dimensional Hubbard model. As a prelude to this study, I compare the numerical results to the exact one for the tight-binding model. I find a ground-state energy which agrees with the exact value up to four digits for systems as large as $24 \times 25$. I then apply the method to the interacting case. I find that for strong Hubbard interaction, the ground-state is dominated by magnetic correlations. These...

We obtain a set of generalized eigenvectors that provides a generalized spectral decomposition for a given unitary representation of a commutative, locally compact topological group. These generalized eigenvectors are functionals belonging to the dual space of a rigging on the space of square integrable functions on the character group. These riggings are obtained through suitable spectral measure spaces.

The concept of continuous topological evolution, based upon Cartan's methods of exterior differential systems, is used to develop a topological theory of non-equilibrium thermodynamics, within which there exist processes that exhibit continuous topological change and thermodynamic irreversibility. The technique furnishes a universal, topological foundation for the partial differential equations of hydrodynamics and electrodynamics; the technique does not depend upon a metric, connection or a...

Flickr offers multiple ways of browsing or searching it. One option is tag search, which returns all images tagged with a specific keyword. If the keyword is ambiguous, e.g., ``beetle'' could mean an insect or a car, tag search results will include many images that are not relevant to the sense the user had in mind...

When people talk about change happening on a geologic time scale, most of the time, they mean that the change happens over the course of millions of years: the Colorado River gradually cuts through the soft rock of the Colorado Plateau until it has made a 4,000-foot-deep chasm, the Grand Canyon; continents drift centimeters at a time, slowly changing the shape and position of landmasses on the Earth. Most of the time, change is slow, but sometimes, geologic change happens all at once. This was...

William Shakespeare (April 26, 1564 – April 23, 1616) remains widely to be considered the single greatest playwright of all time. He wrote in such a variety of genres - tragedy, comedy, romance, &c - that there is always at least one monologue in each of his plays.
