We study geometric variational problems for a class of effective models in quantum field theory known as Faddeev-Skyrme models. Mathematically one considers minimizing an energy functional on homotopy classes of maps from closed 3-manifolds into homogeneous spaces of compact Lie groups. The energy minimizers known as Hopfions describe stable configurations of subatomic particles such as protons and their strong interactions. In particular, we introduce novel Sobolev spaces suitable for our...

The determination of the density functions for products of random elements from specified classes of matrices is a basic problem in random matrix theory and is also of interest in theoretical physics. For connected simple Lie groups of $2\times 2$ matrices and conjugacy and spherical classes a complete solution is given here. The problem/solution can be re-stated in terms of the structure of certain Hecke algebras attached to groups of $2\times 2$ matrices.

A multimode uncertainty relation (generalising the Robertson-Schroedinger relation) is derived as a necessary constraint on the second moments of n pairs of canonical operators. In turn, necessary conditions for the separability of multimode continuous variable states under (m+n)-mode bipartitions are derived from the uncertainty relation. These conditions are proven to be necessary and sufficient for (1+n)-mode Gaussian states and for (m+n)-mode bisymmetric Gaussian states.

We report branching fractions and CP asymmetries for $B \to \eta K^*$ and $B \to \eta \rho$ decays. These results are obtained from a $414 {\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The branching fractions, in parts per million, of $\eta K^{*0}$, $\eta K^{*+}$, $\eta \rho^0$, and $\eta \rho^+$ are $15.9\pm 1.2 \pm 0.9$, $19.7^{+2.0}_{-1.9} \pm 1.4$, $0.84^{+0.56}_{-0.51} \pm 0.18$, and...

We compute the expected dimension of the moduli space of torsion-free rank 2 sheaves at a point corresponding to a stable reflexive sheaf and give conditions for the existence of a perfect tangent-obstruction complex on a class of smooth projective threefolds; this class includes Fano and Calabi-Yau threefolds. We also explore both local and global relationships between moduli spaces of reflexive rank 2 sheaves and the Hilbert scheme of curves.

The transport properties of two ferrocenedithiolate systems with different five-member ring connections have been estimated using the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism of quantum transport and the density functional theory. The results of the calculations reveal that the conductance through the ferrocene molecule depends on the position of sulfur atoms. The molecule has a higher electrical conductivity at low bias when the same cyclopentadienyl ring is connected to an Au electrode by...

We present measurements obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope in five bands from 3.6-24 microns of the northern inner radio lobe of Centaurus A, the nearest powerful radio galaxy. We show that this emission is synchrotron in origin. Comparison with ultraviolet observations from GALEX shows that diffuse ultraviolet emission exists in a smaller region than the infrared but also coincides with the radio jet. We discuss the possibility, that synchrotron emission is responsible for the...

Certain well known quantum Hall states -- including the Laughlin states, the Moore-Read Pfaffian, and the Read-Rezayi Parafermion states -- can be defined as the unique lowest degree symmetric analytic function that vanishes as at least p powers as some number (g+1) of particles approach the same point. Analogously, these same quantum Hall states can be generated as the exact highest density zero energy state of simple angular momentum projection operators. Following this theme we determine the...

We calculated a four-point correlation function G_4(k,r;t) and the corresponding structure factor S_4(k,q;t) for a model glass-forming binary mixture. These functions measure the spatial correlations of the relaxation of different particles. We found that these four-point functions are anisotropic and depend on the angle between vectors k and r (or q). The anisotropy is the strongest for times somewhat longer than the beta relaxation time but it is quite pronounced even for times comparable to...

In the search for spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnets, the mineral volborthite has recently been the subject of experimental studies [Hiroi et al.,2001]. It has been suggested that the magnetic properties of this material are described by a spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice with spatially anisotropic exchange couplings. We report on investigations of the Sp(N) symmetric generalisation of this model in the large N limit. We obtain a detailed description of the dependence of possible...

In the low energy domain of four-dimensional SU(2) Yang-Mills theory the spin and the charge of the gauge field can become separated from each other. The ensuing field variables describe the interacting dynamics between a version of the O(3) nonlinear $\sigma$-model and a nonlinear Grassmannian $\sigma$-model, both of which may support closed knotted strings as stable solitons. Lorentz transformations act projectively in the O(3) model which breaks global internal rotation symmetry and removes...

In electromagnetism, the vacuum impedance $Z_0$ is a universal constant, which is as important as the velocity of light $c$ in vacuum. Unfortunately, however, its significance does not seem to be appreciated so well and sometimes the presence itself is ignored. It is partly because in the Gaussian system of units, which has widely been used for long time, $Z_0$ is a dimensionless constant and of unit magnitude. In this paper, we clarify that $Z_0$ is a fundamental parameter in electromagnetism...

This paper addresses the theoretical analysis of dilepton spectra in C+C collisions at GSI-SIS energies. Theoretical predictions for the recent data of the HADES collaboration at SIS-energies are made with the help of a hadron-string transport model, the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model. A mass shift of the $\rho$ meson due to kinematical effects is discussed.

We study the Parisi functional, appearing in the Parisi formula for the pressure of the SK model, as a functional on Ruelle's Probability Cascades (RPC). Computation techniques for the RPC formulation of the functional are developed. They are used to derive continuity and monotonicity properties of the functional retrieving a theorem of Guerra. We also detail the connection between the Aizenman-Sims-Starr variational principle and the Parisi formula. As a final application of the techniques, we...

Chv\'atal, R\"odl, Szemer\'edi and Trotter proved that the Ramsey numbers of graphs of bounded maximum degree are linear in their order. We prove that the same holds for 3-uniform hypergraphs. The main new tool which we prove and use is an embedding lemma for 3-uniform hypergraphs of bounded maximum degree into suitable 3-uniform `pseudo-random' hypergraphs.

We introduce a family of temporal logics to specify the behavior of systems with Zeno behaviors. We extend linear-time temporal logic LTL to authorize models admitting Zeno sequences of actions and quantitative temporal operators indexed by ordinals replace the standard next-time and until future-time operators. Our aim is to control such systems by designing controllers that safely work on $\omega$-sequences but interact synchronously with the system in order to restrict their behaviors. We...

We present results of testing of the ability of eleven popular scoring functions to predict native docked positions using a recently developed method [1] for estimation the entropy contributions of relative motions to protein-ligand binding affinity. The method is based on the integration of the configurational integral over clusters obtained from multiple docked positions. We use a test set of 100 PDB protein-ligand complexes and ensembles of 101 docked positions generated by Wang et al [2]...

Dr. Kathryn Cramer, founder of The Cramer Institute, has developed and brought to life a revolutionary (and refreshingly simple) concept called Asset-Based Thinking - a practical approach to taking the positive side of life’s ledger and using it to full advantage in everything you do. Asset-Based Thinking calls for small shifts in the way people absorb, perceive, filter, and interpret information. It changes the way we see everything, leading to dramatic improvements in the way we live and...
