Thin nanowires of silicon oxide were studied by pseudopotential density functional electronic structure calculations using the generalized gradient approximation. Infinite linear and zigzag Si-O chains were investigated. A wire composed of three-dimensional periodically repeated Si4O8 units was also optimized, but this structure was found to be of limited stability. The geometry, electronic structure, and Hirshfeld charges of these silicon oxide nanowires were computed. The results show that...

In the Green-Schwarz formalism, the closed string worldsheet of the IIB theory couples to Ramond-Ramond (RR) fluxes through spinor bilinears. We study the effect of such fluxes by analyzing the supersymmetry transformation of the worldsheet in general backgrounds. We show that, in the presence RR fields, the closed string can get `polarized', as the spinors acquire non-zero vevs in directions correlating with the orientation of close-by D-branes. Reversing the argument, this may allow for...

We discuss several qualitative properties of the solutions of reaction-diffusion systems and equations of the form $u_t = \epsilon^2 D \Delta u + f(u,x,\epsilon t)$, that are used in modeling pattern formation. We analyze the diffusion neutral and the diffusion dependent situations that, in the time autonomous case, are distinguished by considering the attractors of the shorted equation $u_t = f(u,x)$. We discuss the consequences of being in one or in the other of the two situations and present...

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- STS-110 Mission Specialist Steven Smith relaxes during suit fit, which is part of Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test activities. The TCDT is held at KSC prior to each Space Shuttle flight to provide flight crews an opportunity to participate in simulated launch countdown activities. Scheduled for launch April 4, the 11-day mission will feature Shuttle Atlantis docking with the International Space Station (ISS) and delivering the S0 truss, the centerpiece-segment...

The recent description of the complete genomes of the two most pathogenic species of Brucella opens the way for genome-based analysis of the antigenicity of their proteins. In the present report, we describe a bench-level high-efficiency cloning and expression system (HECES) that allow expression of large numbers of Brucella proteins based on genomic sequence information. Purified proteins are produced with high efficiency in a microarray format conducive to analysis of their sero-reactivity...

We investigate one-dimensional driven diffusive systems where particles may also be created and annihilated in the bulk with sufficiently small rate. In an open geometry, i.e., coupled to particle reservoirs at the two ends, these systems can exhibit ergodicity breaking in the thermodynamic limit. The triggering mechanism is the random motion of a shock in an effective potential. Based on this physical picture we provide a simple condition for the existence of a non-ergodic phase in the phase...

We show that the group of conformal homeomorphisms of the boundary of a rank one symmetric space (except the hyperbolic plane) of noncompact type acts as a maximal convergence group. Moreover, we show that any family of uniformly quasiconformal homeomorphisms has the convergence property. Our theorems generalize results of Gehring and Martin in the real hyperbolic case for M\"obius groups. As a consequence, this shows that the maximal convergence subgroups of the group of self...

We study analytically and numerically Minority Games in which agents may invest in different assets (or markets), considering both the canonical and the grand-canonical versions. We find that the likelihood of agents trading in a given asset depends on the relative amount of information available in that market. More specifically, in the canonical game players play preferentially in the stock with less information. The same holds in the grand canonical game when agents have positive incentives...

Some songs about singing and other essential activities. We hear imaginative recordings by contemporary groups such as Tiger Saw, Great Lake Swimmers, and Wax & Wane, plus some ear-catching older recordings by Julie Driscoll, Karen Dalton, Bryan Maclean, and the late Scottish eccentric Ivor Cutler. Also featured are a few tracks from the new album by the New York-based band Mountains, which makes an unusual kind of chamber music with acoustic guitars, accordion, and computers.

A practical criterion for the irreducibility (with respect to integration by part identities) of a particular Feynman integral to a given set of integrals is presented. The irreducibility is shown to be related to the existence of stable (with zero gradient) points of a specially constructed polynomial.

We discuss the evolution of the peculiar, nearby (z = 0.045), compact galaxy group CG J1720-67.8, by interpreting a large amount of observational information on the basis of our recent results from spectrophotometric evolutionary synthesis models and new N-body/SPH simulations. The group, that is composed of two spiral galaxies with a mass ratio approximately 4:1 and an S0 galaxy in a particularly compact configuration, is undergoing an active pre-merging phase. Several tidal features are...

Whether radio intermediate quasars possess relativistic jets as radio-loud quasars is an important issue in the understanding of the origin of radio emission in quasars. In this letter, using the two-epoch radio data obtained during Faint Image of Radio Sky at Twenty centimeter sky (FIRST) and NOAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS), we identify 89 radio variable sources in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Among them, more than half are radio intermediate quasars (RL=f2cm/f2500A

Interaction of particles of dust with vortex convective flows is under theoretical consideration. It is assumed that the volume fraction of solid phase is small, variations of density due to nonuniform distribution of particles and those caused by temperature nonisothermality of medium are comparable. Equations for the description of thermal buoyancy convection of a dusty medium are developed in the framework of the generalized Boussinesq approximation taking into account finite velocity of...

We derived the black hole fundamental plane relationship among the 1.4GHz radio luminosity (L_r), 0.1-2.4keV X-ray luminosity (L_X), and black hole mass (M) from a uniform broad line SDSS AGN sample including both radio loud and radio quiet X-ray emitting sources. We found in our sample that the fundamental plane relation has a very weak dependence on the black hole mass, and a tight correlation also exists between the Eddington luminosity scaled X-ray and radio luminosities for the radio quiet...

We investigate the implementation of binary projective measurements with linear optics. This problem can be viewed as a single-shot discrimination of two orthogonal pure quantum states. We show that any two orthogonal states can be perfectly discriminated using only linear optics, photon counting, coherent ancillary states, and feedforward. The statement holds in the asymptotic limit of large number of these physical resources.

We use an analogue of Karoubi's construction in the motivic situation to give some cohomology operations in motivic cohomology. We prove many properties of these operations, and we show that they coincide, up to some nonzero constants, with the reduced power operations in motivic cohomology originally constructed by Voevodsky. The relation of our construction to Voevodsky's is, roughly speaking, that of a fixed point set to its associated homotopy fixed point set.
