This is a sequel to \cite{li-qva}. In this paper, we focus on the construction of quantum vertex algebras over $\C$, whose notion was formulated in \cite{li-qva} with Etingof and Kazhdan's notion of quantum vertex operator algebra (over $\C[[h]]$) as one of the main motivations. As one of the main steps in constructing quantum vertex algebras, we prove that every countable-dimensional nonlocal (namely noncommutative) vertex algebra over $\C$, which either is irreducible or has a basis of PBW...

We express the finite 3D Dimer partition function as a linear combination of determinants of oriented adjacency matrices, and the finite 3D Ising partition sum as a linear combination of products over aperiodic closed walks. The methodology we use is embedding of cubic lattice on 2D surfaces of large genus.

$^{59}$Co NMR spectra in oriented powders of Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$ and in its hydrated superconducting phase (HSC) Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$,1.3H$_{2}$O reveal a single electronic Co state with identical $T$ independent NMR shift tensor. These phases differ markedly from Na$_{0.7}$CoO$_{2}$, in which we resolve 3 types of Co sites. The large T variation of their spin susceptibilities $\chi ^{s}$ and the anisotropy of the orbital susceptibility $\chi ^{orb}$ allow us to conclude that charge...

Recent results on $\psip$ decays, including 10 Vector + Pseudoscalar (VP) modes and $p\bar{p}\pi^0(\eta)$, are reported with $14\times10^6$ $\psip$ events collected with the BESII detector. Cross sections and form factors for $e^+e^- \to \wpi$, $\rho\eta$, and $\rho\etap$ at the center of mass energies of 3.650, 3.686, and 3.773 GeV are measured simultaneously.

We show that recent results in [3] on risk bounds for regularized least-squares on reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces can be straight-forwardly extended to the vector-valued regression setting. We first briefly introduce central concepts on operator-valued kernels, then we show how risk bounds can be expressed in terms of a generalization of effective dimension.

Using The Hubble Space Telescope's Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph HST's STIS, observations of the OIII emission from the narrow-line region (NLR) of NGC 4151 were obtained and radial velocities determined. Five orbits of HST time were used to obtain spectra at five parallel slit configurations, at a position angle of 58 degrees, with spatial resolution 0.2 arcseconds across and 0.1 arcseconds along each slit. A spectral resolving power of ~ 9,000 with the G430M grating gave velocity...

For exploring the physics behind the accelerating universe a crucial question is how much we can learn about the dynamics through next generation cosmological experiments. For example, in defining the dark energy behavior through an effective equation of state, how many parameters can we realistically expect to tightly constrain? Through both general and specific examples (including new parametrizations and principal component analysis) we argue that the answer is 42 - no, wait, two....

We report results from a multi-wavelength monitoring campaign on Mrk 421 over the period of 2003-2004. The source was observed simultaneously at TeV and X-ray energies, with supporting observations frequently carried out at optical and radio wavelengths. The large amount of simultaneous data has allowed us to examine the variability of Mrk 421 in detail. The variabilities are generally correlated between the X-ray and gamma-ray bands, although the correlation appears to be fairly loose. The...

The RAPid Telescopes for Optical Response (RAPTOR) system at Los Alamos National Laboratory observed GRB 050319 starting 25.4 seconds after gamma-ray emission triggered the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on-board the Swift satellite. Our well sampled light curve of the early optical afterglow is composed of 32 points (derived from 70 exposures) that measure the flux decay during the first hour after the GRB. The GRB 050319 light curve measured by RAPTOR can be described as a relatively gradual...

In the context of Lorentz-invariant massive gravity we show that classical solutions around heavy sources are plagued by ghost instabilities. The ghost shows up in the effective field theory at huge distances from the source, much bigger than the Vainshtein radius. Its presence is independent of the choice of the non-linear terms added to the Fierz-Pauli Lagrangian. At the Vainshtein radius the mass of the ghost is of order of the inverse radius, so that the theory cannot be trusted inside this...

We explicitly determine the symplectic structure on the phase space of Chern-Simons theory with gauge group $G\ltimes g^*$ on a three-manifold of topology $R \times S$, where $S$ is a surface of genus $g$ with $n+1$ punctures. At each puncture additional variables are introduced and coupled minimally to the Chern-Simons gauge field. The first $n$ punctures are treated in the usual way and the additional variables lie on coadjoint orbits of $G\ltimes g^*$. The $(n+1)$st puncture plays a...

We consider importance sampling as well as other properly weighted samples with respect to a target distribution $\pi$ from a different point of view. By considering the associated weights as sojourn times until the next jump, we define appropriate jump processes. When the original sample sequence forms an ergodic Markov chain, the associated jump process is an ergodic semi--Markov process with stationary distribution $\pi$. Hence, the type of convergence of properly weighted samples may be...

For a commutative local ring $R$, consider (noncommutative) $R$-algebras $\Lambda$ of the form $\Lambda = End_R(M)$ where $M$ is a reflexive $R$-module with nonzero free direct summand. Such algebras $\Lambda$ of finite global dimension can be viewed as potential substitutes for, or analogues of, a resolution of singularities of $Spec R$. For example, Van den Bergh has shown that a three-dimensional Gorenstein normal $C$-algebra with isolated terminal singularities has a crepant resolution of...

We present a set of long-range Bethe ansatz equations for open quantum strings on AdS_5 x S^5 and demonstrate that they diagonalize bosonic su(2) and sl(2) sectors of the theory in the near-pp-wave limit. Results are compared with energy spectra obtained by direct quantization of the open string theory, and we find agreement in this limit to all orders in the 't Hooft coupling lambda = g_YM^2 N_c. We also propose long-range Bethe ansaetze for su(2) and sl(2) sectors of the dual N=2 defect...

These figures have been adjusted to match United Nations totals. The most dramatic differences in population are not readily visible in this animation because they are located in cities. The maximum population density in 1990 was about 79,000 people per square kilometer, while the estimated maximum population density in 2015 will be about 236,000...

Using the action describing N coincident gravitational waves in M-theory we construct a pp-wave Matrix model cointaning a fuzzy 5-sphere giant graviton solution. This fuzzy 5-sphere is constructed as a U(1) fibration over a fuzzy $CP^2$, and has the correct dependence of the radius with the light-cone momentum, $r^4\sim p^+$, to approach the 5-sphere giant graviton solution of Mc.Greevy et al in the large N limit.

We prove non-subelliptic estimates for the tangential Cauchy-Riemann system over a weakly "$q$-pseudoconvex" higher codimensional submanifold $M$ of $\C^n$. Let us point out that our hypotheses do not suffice to guarantee subelliptic estimates, in general. Even more: hypoellipticity of the tangential C-R system is not in question (as shows the example by Kohn in case of a Levi-flat hypersurface). However our estimates suffice for existence of smooth solutions to the inhomogeneous C-R...

We discuss the minimal free resolution of an irreducible projective subscheme X. If X is also reduced, we focus on the case when its degree equals two plus the codimension. The set of all possible graded Betti numbers is described if the codimension is two. In general, there are only partial results. Then we discuss Cohen-Macaulay structures on a linear subspace. For such curves of degree two, the classification has been obtained by Notari, Spreafico, and the author. In general, the...

We study the problem of minimal resistance for a body moving with constant velocity in a rarefied medium of chaotically moving point particles, in Euclidean space R^d. The particles distribution over velocities is radially symmetric. Under some additional assumptions on the distribution function, the complete classification of bodies of least resistance is made. In the case of three and more dimensions there are two kinds of solutions: a body similar to the solution of classical Newton's...

The neutral fermion sectors of E_6-inspired low energy models, in particular the Alternative Left-Right and Inert models, are considered in detail within the non-supersymmetric scenario. We show that in their simplest form, these models always predict, for each generation, the lightest neutrino to be an SU(2)_L singlet, as well as two extra neutrinos with masses of the order of the up-quark mass. In order to recover Standard Model phenomenology, additional assumptions in the form of discrete...
