Operating the Mars Exploration Rovers is a challenging, time-pressured task. Each day, the operations team must generate a new plan describing the rover activities for the next day. These plans must abide by resource limitations, safety rules, and temporal constraints. The objective is to achieve as much science as possible, choosing from a set of observation requests that oversubscribe rover resources. In order to accomplish this objective, given the short amount of planning time available,...

Macros are powerful tools that can facilitate resuse. But, with few exceptions, macros have traditionally been viewed as operations on syntax trees or even on plain strings. This view makes macros seem ad hoc, and is at odds with two desirable features of contemporary programming languages: static typing and static scoping. At a deeper level, there is a need for a simple, usable semantics for macros. We argue that these problems can be addressed by formally viewing macros as multi-stage...

We experimentally study spin accumulation in an aluminium island with all dimensions smaller than the spin relaxation length, so that the spin imbalance throughout the island is uniform. Electrical injection and detection of the spin accumulation are carried out in a four terminal geometry by means of four cobalt electrodes connected to the island through tunnel barriers. We model the system theoretically and we investigate the role of the ferromagnetic electrodes on the spin accumulation at...

Using coherence analysis (which is an extensively used method to study the correlations in frequency domain, between two simultaneously measured signals) we estimate the time delay between two signals. This method is suitable for time delay estimation of narrow band coherence signals for which the conventional methods cannot be reliably applied. We show by analysing coupled R\"ossler attractors with a known delay, that the method yields satisfactory results. Then, we apply this method to...

We use numerical simulations to examine the structure of merger remnants resulting from collisions of gas-rich spiral galaxies. When the gas fraction of the progenitors is small, the remnants structurally and kinematically resemble elliptical galaxies, in agreement with earlier work. However, if the progenitor disks are gas-dominated, new types of outcomes are possible. In fact, we show that a prominent disk may survive in certain cases. To illustrate this scenario, we analyze an extreme...

The n-string braid group of a graph X is defined as the fundamental group of the n-point configuration space of the space X. This configuration space is a finite dimensional aspherical space. A. Abrams and R. Ghrist have conjectured that this braid group is a right angled Artin group if X is planar. We prove their conjecture if X is a tree whose nodes all lie in a single interval of X.

These proceedings represent a brief overview of the exciting physics coming out from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The experimental results from BRAHMS, PHOBOS, PHENIX and STAR indicate a strongly-coupled state of matter that can only be described on the partonic level. Here we review some of the latest experimental results as presented at the meeting of the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society in Riverside, CA in...

Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) modulates several cellular functional proteins by a mechanism in which the proteins are poly-ADP-ribosylated by transferring the ADP-ribose moieties from the enzyme substrate NAD+ to the proteins. PARP is activated following damage to cellular DNA by alkylating agents including sulfur mustard (SM). We observed concurrent activation of PARP and DNA ligase in SM-exposed human epidermal keratinocytes (HEK). Previous reports from other laboratories suggested that...

We report the XMM-Newton discovery of a X-ray bright AGN pair in the interacting galaxy system ESO509-IG066. Both galaxies host an X-ray luminous (L_X ~10^{43} erg/s) obscured nucleus with column densities N_H~7x10^{22} and N_H~5x10^{21} atoms/cm/cm. The optical morphology is only mildly disturbed, suggesting a merging system in the early stage of its evolution. Still, the pair is probably gravitationally bound, and might eventually evolve into a compact, fully gas embedded systems such as...

We measure the near-infrared properties of 42 X-ray detected sources from the Chandra Deep Fields North and South, the majority of which lie within the NICMOS Hubble Deep Field North and Ultra Deep Field. We detect all 42 Chandra sources with NICMOS, with 95% brighter than H = 24.5. We find that X-ray sources are most often in the brightest and most massive galaxies. Neither the X-ray fluxes nor hardness ratios of the sample show any correlation with near-infrared flux, color or morphology....

Long-term geomagnetic activity presented by the aa index has been used to show that the heliospheric magnetic field has more than doubled during the last 100 years. However, serious concern has been raised on the long-term consistency of the aa index and on the centennial rise of the solar magnetic field. Here we reanalyze geomagnetic activity during the last 100 years by calculating the recently suggested IHV (Inter-Hour Variability) index as a measure of local geomagnetic activity for seven...

Using the correlation between the equivalent width of the diffuse interstellar band (DIB) at 8620 A and the interstellar reddening reported by Munari (2000) GAIA could directly trace the interstellar extinction throughout the Galaxy. We checked for the magnitude and distance limitations of this method in 42 Galactic directions by simulating the RVS data on the stellar sample provided by the model of stellar population synthesis of the Galaxy (Robin et al. 2003). The simulation indicates that...

We estimate that the moment of inertia of star A in the recently discovered double pulsar system PSR J0737-3039 may be determined after a few years of observation to something like 10% accuracy. This would enable accurate estimates of the radius of the star and the presure of matter in the vicinity of 1 to 2 times the nuclear saturation density, which would in turn provide strong constraints on the equation of state of neutron stars and the physics of their interiors.

The dynamic conductance of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ is measured by point-contact spectroscopy as a function of temperature from 60 K down to 400 mK. The contact between the gold tip and the single-crystal is shown to be in the Sharvin limit with the enhanced sub-gap conductance arising from Andreev reflection. The zero-bias conductance data are best fit using the extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model with a d-wave superconducting order parameter. A fit to the full...

Electron Raman scattering (ERS) is investigated in a parabolic semiconductor quantum wire in a transverse magnetic field neglecting by phonon-assisted transitions. The ERS cross-section is calculated as a function of a frequency shift and magnetic field. The process involves an interband electronic transition and an intraband transition between quantized subbands. We analyze the differential cross-section for different scattering configurations. We study selection rules for the processes. Some...

We consider a self-consistent system of Bianchi type-I (BI) gravitational field and a binary mixture of perfect fluid and dark energy given by a cosmological constant. The perfect fluid is chosen to be the one obeying either the usual equation of state, i.e., $p = \zeta \ve$, with $\zeta \in [0, 1]$ or a van der Waals equation of state. Role of the $\Lambda$ term in the evolution of the BI Universe has been studied.

A novel viewpoint, i.e., adaptive synchronization, is proposed to explore collective rhythm observed in many complex, self-organizing systems. We show that a simple adaptive coupling is able to tip arrays of oscillators towards collective synchronization. Two arrays of simply coupled Hindmarsh-Rose chaotic neurons are used to illustrate cooperative dynamics of neural activity like the central pattern generators, which supplies a new idea for biological experiments and numerical simulations. When quantifying the mixing properties of a quantum dynamical system in terms of dynamical entropy, the following scheme appears natural: observe the state of the system at regular time intervals while it evolves and determine the entropy produced over time. It is clear that this entropy will not only depend on the type of dynamics, but also on the type of observations. Intuitively, one can expect that some measurements are better suited than others to reveal information about the dynamics,...

Transferring the state of a quantum system to a given distribution of populations is an important problem with applications to Quantum Chemistry and Atomic Physics. In this work we consider exact population transfers that minimize the L^2 norm of the control which is typically the amplitude of an electromagnetic field. This problem is analytically and numerically challenging. Except for few exactly solvable cases, there is no general understanding of the nature of optimal controls and...

We discuss some aspects of the recently discovered BPS black ring solutions in terms of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the type IIB frame in which the black ring carries the charges of the D1-D5-P system, we propose a microscopic description of the rings in the orbifold CFT governing this system. In our proposal, the CFT effectively splits into two parts: one part captures the supertube-like properties of the ring, and the other captures the entropy. We can also understand the black ring...

The sky is monitored continuously and the data are analysed on-line. It has self-triggering capability and can react to external triggers with negative delay. The prototype with two cameras has been installed at Las Campanas (Chile) and is operational from July 2004. The paper presents general idea and...
