The structure properties of multidimensional Delsarte transmutation operators in parametirc functional spaces are studied by means of differential-geometric tools. It is shown that kernels of the corresponding integral operator expressions depend on the topological structure of related homological cycles in the coordinate space. As a natural realization of the construction presented we build pairs of Lax type commutive differential operator expressions related via a Darboux-Backlund...

The High Level Trigger (HLT) of the future ALICE heavy-ion experiment has to reduce its input data rate of up to 25 GB/s to at most 1.25 GB/s for output before the data is written to permanent storage. To cope with these data rates a large PC cluster system is being designed to scale to several 1000 nodes, connected by a fast network. For the software that will run on these nodes a flexible data transport and distribution software framework, described in this thesis, has been developed. The...

We construct a state in the loop quantum gravity theory with zero cosmological constant, which should correspond to the flat spacetime vacuum solution. This is done by defining the loop transform coefficients of a flat connection wavefunction in the holomorphic representation which satisfies all the constraints of quantum General Relativity and it is peaked around the flat space triads. The loop transform coefficients are defined as spin foam state sum invariants of the spin networks embedded...

We consider simply generated trees and study multiplicative functions on rooted plane trees. We show that the associated generating functions satisfy differential equations or difference equations. Extraction of the CMB (Cosmic Microwave Background) angular power spectrum is a challenging task for current and future CMB experiments due to the large data sets involved. Here we describe an implementation of MASTER (Monte carlo Apodised Spherical Transform EstimatoR) which exploits the destriping technique as a map-making method. In this method a noise estimate based on destriped noise-only MC (Monte Carlo) simulations is subtracted from the pseudo angular power spectrum. As a working case...

We consider the primes which divide the denominator of the x-coordinate of a sequence of rational points on an elliptic curve. It is expected that for every sufficiently large value of the index, each term should be divisible by a primitive prime divisor, one that has not appeared in any earlier term. Proofs of this are known in only a few cases. Weaker results in the general direction are given, using a strong form of Siegel's Theorem and some congruence arguments. Our main result is applied...

Variability studies represent a powerful tool to assess the emission mechanism(s) at work in the quiescent state of transient low mass X-ray binaries. Here we report on Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of two well known transient sources: Aql X-1 and Cen X-4. Long and short term variability is observed. This variability can be easily interpreted in view of an active millisecond radio pulsar emitting X-rays at the shock between a radio pulsar wind and inflowing matter from the companion star.

A Bose-Einstein "double-slit" interferometer has been recently realized experimentally by (Y. Shin et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92 50405 (2004)). We analyze the interferometric steps by solving numerically the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevski equation in three-dimensional space. We focus on the adiabaticity time scales of the problem and on the creation of spurious collective excitations as a possible source of the strong dephasing observed experimentally. The role of quantum fluctuations...

Muon spin rotation and relaxation ($\mu$SR) experiments have yielded evidence that structural disorder is an important factor in many f-electron-based non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) systems. Disorder-driven mechanisms for NFL behaviour are suggested by the observed broad and strongly temperature-dependent $\mu$SR (and NMR) linewidths in several NFL compounds and alloys. Local disorder-driven theories (Kondo disorder, Griffiths-McCoy singularity) are, however, not capable of describing the time-field...

We prove Wigner-Eckart theorem for the irreducible tensor operators for arbitrary Hopf algebras, provided that tensor product of their irreducible representation is completely reducible. The proof is based on the properties of the irreducible representations of Hopf algebras, in particular on Schur lemma. Two classes of tensor operators for the Hopf algebra U$_{t}$(su(2)) are considered. The reduced matrix elements for the class of irreducible tensor operators are calculated. A construction of...

We study the boundary states of (p', p) rational conformal field theories having a W symmetry of the type A(r) using the multi-component free-field formalism. The classification of primary fields for these models given in the literature is shown to be incomplete; we give the correct classification by demanding modular covariance and show that the resulting modular S matrix satisfies all the necessary conditions. Basis states satisfying the boundary conditions are found in the form of coherent...

The equilibrium properties of classical self-gravitating systems in the grand canonical ensemble are studied by using the correspondence with an euclidean field theory with infrared and ultraviolet cutoffs. It is shown that the system developes a first order phase transition between a low and a high density regime. In addition, due to the long range of the gravitational potential, the system is close to criticality within each phase, with the exponents of mean field theory. The coexistence of a...

We present a new mid-infrared (12.5micron) map of the BN/KL high-mass star-forming complex in Orion using the LWS instrument at Keck I. Despite poor weather we achieved nearly diffraction-limited images (FWHM = 0.38'') over a roughly 25'' X 25'' region centered on IRc2 down to a flux limit of ~250 mJy. Many of the known infrared (IR) sources in the region break up into smaller sub-components. We have also detected 6 new mid-IR sources. Nearly all of the sources are resolved in our mosaic. The...

We construct new complete, compact, inhomogeneous Einstein metrics on S^{m+2} sphere bundles over 2n-dimensional Einstein-Kahler spaces K_{2n}, for all n \ge 1 and all m \ge 1. We also obtain complete, compact, inhomogeneous Einstein metrics on warped products of S^m with S^2 bundles over K_{2n}, for m>1. Additionally, we construct new complete, non-compact Ricci-flat metrics with topologies S^m times R^2 bundles over K_{2n} that generalise the higher-dimensional Taub-BOLT metrics, and with...

Noncommutative generalizations of Yang-Mills theories using Seiberg-Witten map are in general not unique. We study these ambiguities and see that SO(10) GUT, at first order in the noncommutativity parameter \theta, is unique and therefore is a truly unified theory, while SU(5) is not. We then present the noncommutative Standard Model compatible with SO(10) GUT. We next study the reality, hermiticity and C,P,T properties of the Seiberg-Witten map and of these noncommutative actions at all orders...

It has been long--conjectured that the crossing number cr(K_m,n) of the complete bipartite graph K_m,n equals the Zarankiewicz Number Z(m,n):= floor((m-1)/2) floor(m/2) floor((n-1)/2) floor(n/2). Another long--standing conjecture states that the crossing number cr(K_n) of the complete graph K_n equals Z(n):= floor(n/2) floor((n-1)/2) floor((n-2)/2) floor((n-3)/2)/4. In this paper we show the following improved bounds on the asymptotic ratios of these crossing numbers and their conjectured...

We study local and nonlocal correlations of light transmitted through active random media. The conventional approach results in divergence of ensemble averaged correlation functions due to existence of lasing realizations. We introduce conditional average for correlation functions by omitting the divergent realizations. Our numerical simulation reveals that amplification does not affect local spatial correlation. The nonlocal intensity correlations are strongly magnified due to selective...
