Byzantine Agreement introduced in [Pease, Shostak, Lamport, 80] is a widely used building block of reliable distributed protocols. It simulates broadcast despite the presence of faulty parties within the network, traditionally using only private unicast links. Under such conditions, Byzantine Agreement requires more than 2/3 of the parties to be compliant. [Fitzi, Maurer, 00], constructed a Byzantine Agreement protocol for any compliant majority based on an additional primitive allowing...

A spherically symmetric fluid code that includes the relativistic effects of hot electrons has been newly developed. In the present simulations, I attempt to implode a target shell of laser fusion using a nanosecond pulse; then, an additional heating short pulse is injected into the coronal plasma surrounding a highly compressed core. I found that the relativistic effects of hot electrons on electron transport are likely to inhibit the heat flows, and to reduce thermonuclear fusion neutrons...

I theoretically found eigenmodes and growth rates of relativistic current filamentation instability in collisional regimes, deriving a generalized dispersion relation from self-consistent beam-Maxwell equations. For symmetrically counterstreaming, fully relativistic electron currents, the collisional coupling between electrons and ions creates the unstable modes of growing oscillation and wave, which stand out for long-wavelength perturbations. In the stronger collisional regime, the growing...

INTRODUCTION The Humane Environment (THE) comprises, among other things, a productive editor for quickly creating drafts of documents with a minimum of effort and hassle. It drastically cuts down on the number of keystrokes and mouse moves it takes to do editing tasks compared with GUI editors such as Word or AppleWorks. In this environment, mouse moves are used only when doing graphic operations such as resizing a window or working on a drawing or photo. After you've become familiar with the...

We discuss the relation between `bare' cosmological parameters as the true spatial average characteristics that determine the cosmological model, and the parameters interpreted by observers with a `Friedmannian bias', i.e., within a homogeneous space geometry. We may say that the latter are `dressed' by the smoothed-out geometrical inhomogeneities of the surveyed spatial region. We identify two effects that quantify the difference between `bare' and `dressed' parameters: `curvature...

Software package for Monte-Carlo simulation of e+e- exclusive annihilation channels written in the C++ language for Linux/Solaris platforms has been developed. It incorporates matrix elements for several mechanisms of multipion production in a model of consequent two and three-body resonance decays. Possible charge states of intermediate and final particles are accounted automatically under the assumption of isospin conservation. Interference effects can be taken into acccount. Package...

Relativistic heat transport in electron-two-temperature plasmas with density gradients has been investigated. The Legendre expansion analysis of relativistically modified kinetic equations shows that strong inhibition of heat flux appears in relativistic temperature regimes, suppressing the classical Spitzer-H{\"a}rm conduction. The Seebeck coefficient, the Wiedemann-Franz law, and the thermoelectric figure of merit are derived in the relativistic regimes.

In this paper we study the price dynamics in a simple model of financial markets with heterogeneous agents. We concentrate on how increases in the total number of active traders influences fluctuations of asset prices. We find that a curious route to chaos is observed when the total number of [active traders] increases. Particularly, we show that {\it intermittent chaos} [1] of price fluctuations is observed as the total number of trader increases.

We analyze the elastic scattering of protons on a 4n system. This was used as part of the detection technique of a recent experiment [1] to search for the 4n (tetraneutron) as a bound particle. We show that it is unlikely that this process alone could yield the events reported in ref. [1], unless the 4n has an anomalously large backward elastic scattering amplitude.

We propose new effective inter-nucleon forces with a finite-range three-body operator. The proposed forces are suitable for describing the nuclear structure properties over a wide mass number region, including the saturation point of nuclear matter. The forces are applied to microscopic calculations of $Z=N$ ($A\le 40$) nuclei and O isotopes with a method of antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. We present the characteristics of the forces and discuss the importance of the finite-range three-body...

We consider a reductive dual pair (G, G') in the stable range with G' the smaller member and of Hermitian symmetric type. We study the theta lifting of nilpotent K'_C-orbits, where K' is a maximal compact subgroup of G' and we describe the precise K_C-module structure of the regular function ring of the closure of the lifted nilpotent orbit of the symmetric pair (G, K). As an application, we prove sphericality and normality of the closure of certain nilpotent K_C-orbits obtained in this way. We...

The CP violating processes J/psi-->K_S K_S and psi(2S)-->K_S K_S are searched for using samples of 58 million J/psi and 14 million psi(2S) events collected with the Beijing Spectrometer at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. No signal is observed, and upper limits on the decay branching ratios are determined to be BR(J/psi-->K_S K_S) < 1.0x10^{-6} and BR(psi(2S)-->K_S K_S) < 4.6x10^{-6} at the 95% confidence level.

The latest $\pi N$ elastic scattering data are re-analysed to determine the coupling constant $g_c$ of the charged pion, using the dispersion relation for the invariant amplitude $B^{(+)}$. Depending on the choice of data-base, values $g^2_c/4\pi = 13.80$ to 13.65 are obtained with errors of $\pm 0.12$. We re-examine the well known discrepancy with the Goldberger-Treiman relation. After allowing for the mass dependence of the pion decay constant $f_\pi$, a (2-3)% discrepancy is predicted, hence...

A coexistent phase of spin polarization and color superconductivity in high-density QCD is studied at zero temperature. The axial-vector self-energy stemming from the Fock exchange term of the one-gluon-exchange interaction has a central role to cause spin polarization. As a significant feature, the Fermi surface is deformed by the axial-vector self-energy and then rotation symmetry is spontaneously broken down. The gap function results in being anisotropic in the momentum space in accordance...

We demonstrate the importance of anisotropic neutrino radiation in the mechanism of core-collapse supernova explosions. Through a new parameter study with a fixed radiation field of neutrinos, we show that global anisotropy of the neutrino radiation is the most effective mechanism of increasing the explosion energy when the total neutrino luminosity is given. We discuss the reason why, and demonstrate how sensitively the success of a supernova explosion depends on the neutrino luminosity.

The general system is given of nonlinear equations describing dissipationless evolution of the oscillating Bose-condensate. The relaxation of transverse oscillations of the condensate in a trap of the cylindric symmetry is considered. The evolution occurs due to parametric resonance coupling the transverse mode with the longitudinal ones. The nonlinear rescattering in the subsystem of discrete longitudinal modes results in suppression of the return of energy, yielding dissipationless...

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and magnetic measurements were performed to study the influence of ferromagnetic 3-d transition elements Fe and Co on structural and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic shape memory alloys Ni2MnGa. Addition of Fe or Co on the Ni sites decreases the temperature of martensitic phase transition Tm, whereas addition of Co on the Mn sites results in a considerable increase of Tm. Magnetic measurement revealed that Curie temperature TC increases upon...
