A massive iceberg that had been blocking traditional shipping routes to McMurdo Station, the National Science Foundation’s research station in Antarctica, snapped in two seemingly overnight. The B-15A iceberg seemed to be intact in the Terra MODIS image recorded on October 7, 2003. But Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images starting on October 9 show the iceberg in two pieces. The largest section, top, is about 75 miles long, and the shorter section, called B-15J, is...

The goals of this research are: 1) To validate TIMED Doppler Interferometer (TIDI) winds using ground-based MF and meteor winds; and 2) To examine short-term (i. e., day-to-day and week-to-week) variability of the diurnal tide. This objective was to have originally been met using comparisons of short-term diurnal tidal determinations from ground-based (GB) winds with planetary-scale diurnal nonmigrating tidal definitions from TIDI winds.

We theoretically study hydrodynamic phenomena originating from electron-electron collisions in a two-dimensional Fermi system. We demonstrate that an electron beam sweeping past an aperture creates a pumping effect, attracting carriers from this aperture. This pumping effect originates from the specific electric potential distribution induced by the injected electrons. In the regions nearby the main stream of injected electrons, a positive potential is induced by the injected electrons. Thus,...

We present a review of the vortex-Nernst effect in the 3 cuprate families La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4, Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8, and YBa_2Cu_3O_{y}, and discuss the scenario that the superconducting transition in the hole-doped cuprates corresponds to the destruction of long-range phase coherence rather than the vanishing of the order-parameter amplitude.

Using results of Chandra observations of old stellar systems in eleven nearby galaxies of various morphological types and the census of LMXBs in the Milky Way, we study the population of low mass X-ray binaries and their relation to the mass of the host galaxy. We show that the azimuthally averaged spatial distribution of the number of LMXBs and, in the majority of cases, of their collective luminosity closely follows that of the near-infrared light. Considering galaxies as a whole, we find...

Hydrophobicity is thought to be one of the primary forces driving the folding of proteins. On average, hydrophobic residues occur preferentially in the core, whereas polar residues tends to occur at the surface of a folded protein. By analyzing the known protein structures, we quantify the degree to which the hydrophobicity sequence of a protein correlates with its pattern of surface exposure. We have assessed the statistical significance of this correlation for several hydrophobicity scales in...

Is the dynamical evolution of physical systems objectively a manifestation of information processing by the universe? We find that an affirmative answer has important consequences for the measurement problem. In particular, we calculate the amount of quantum information processing involved in the evolution of physical systems, assuming a finite degree of fine-graining of Hilbert space. This assumption is shown to imply that there is a finite capacity to sustain the immense entanglement that...

The Mott insulator state created by loading an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) into an optical lattice may be used as a means to prepare a register of atomic qubits in a quantum computer. Such architecture requires a lattice commensurately filled with atoms, which corresponds to the insulator state only in the limit of zero inter-well tunneling. We show that a lattice with spatial inhomogeneity created by a quadratic magnetic trapping potential can be used to isolate a subspace in the...

For the description of nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) of rare-gas atoms by a strong linearly polarized laser field, the quantum-mechanical $S$-matrix diagram that incorporates rescattering impact ionization is evaluated in the strong-field approximation. We employ a uniform approximation, which is a generalization of the standard saddle-point approximation. We systematically analyze the manifestations of the electron-electron interaction in the momentum distributions of the ejected...

By combining our UVES-VLT spectra of a sample of four damped Ly-alpha systems (DLAs) toward the quasars Q0100+13, Q1331+17, Q2231-00 and Q2343+12 with the existing HIRES-Keck spectra, we covered the total spectral range from 3150 to 10000 A for the four quasars. This large wavelength coverage and the high quality of the spectra allowed us to measure the column densities of up to 21 ions, namely of 15 elements - N, O, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn. In this short note, we consider self-similar immersions $F: \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^{n+k}$ of the Graphic Mean Curvature Flow of higher co-dimension. We show that the following is true: Let $F(x) = (x,f(x)), x \in \mathbb{R}^{n}$ be a graph solution to the soliton equation $$ \bar{H}(x) + F^{\bot}(x) = 0. $$ Assume $\sup_{\mathbb{R}^{n}}|Df(x)| \le C_{0} < + \infty$. Then there exists a unique smooth function $f_{\infty}: \mathbb{R}^{n}\to \mathbb{R}^k$ such that $$ f_{\infty}(x) =...

Palindromes are those reduced words of free products of groups that coincide with their reverse words. We prove that a free product of groups $G$ has infinite palindromic width, provided that $G$ is not the free product of two cyclic groups of order two. This means that there is no a uniform bound $k$ such that every element of $G$ is a product of at most $k$ palindromes. Earlier the similar fact established for non-abelian free groups.

A model for the generation of fractal growth networks in Euclidean spaces of arbitrary dimension is presented. These networks are considered as the spatial support of reaction-diffusion and pattern formation processes. The local dynamics at the nodes of a fractal growth network is given by a nonlinear map, giving raise to a coupled map system. The coupling is described by a matrix whose eigenvectors constitute a basis on which spatial patterns on fractal growth networks can be expressed by...

A model for high-energy (>10^14 eV) cosmic rays (HECRs) from galactic and extragalactic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is summarized. Relativistic outflows in GRBs are assumed to inject power-law distributions of CR protons and ions to the highest (>10^20 eV) energies. A diffusive propagation model for HECRs from a single recent GRB within 1 kpc from Earth explains the CR spectrum near and above the knee. The CR spectrum at energies above 10^18 eV is fit with a component from extragalactic GRBs....

Observations show that solar activity is distributed non-axisymmetrically, concentrating at "preferred longitudes". This indicates the important role of non-axisymmetric magnetic fields in the origin of solar activity. We investigate the generation of the non-axisymmetric fields and their coupling with axisymmetric solar magnetic field. Our kinematic generation (dynamo) model operating in a sphere includes solar differential rotation, which approximates the differential rotation...

We present the first study to explore the use of out-of-turn interaction in websites. Out-of-turn interaction is a technique which empowers the user to supply unsolicited information while browsing. This approach helps flexibly bridge any mental mismatch between the user and the website, in a manner fundamentally different from faceted browsing and site-specific search tools. We built a user interface (Extempore) which accepts out-of-turn input via voice or text; and employed it in a US...

We show that the construction of super-Calogero model with OSp(2|2) supersymmetry is not unique. In particular, we find a new co-ordinate representation of the generators of the OSp(2|2) superalgebra that appears as the dynamical supersymmetry of the rational super-Calogero model. Both the quadratic and the cubic Casimir operators of the OSp(2|2) are necessarily zero in this new representation, while they are, in general, nonzero for the super-Calogero model that is currently studied in the...

We measured the dynamics of polariton parametric stimulated scattering in semiconductor microcavities, by time-resolving the amplified signal with 250 fs resolution. Our experiments demonstrate that the stimulation process is considerably delayed with respect to the arrival time of both probe and pump pulses. This effect is clearly observable in our high quality sample due to the long lifetime of the microcavity polaritons (about 10 ps), and it is in excellent agreement with the model...

Material defects in hard type II superconductors pin the flux lines and thus establish the dissipation-free current transport in the presence of a finite magnetic field. Depending on the density and pinning force of the defects and the vortex density, pinning is either weak-collective or strong. We analyze the weak- to strong pinning crossover of vortex matter in disordered superconductors and discuss the peak effect appearing naturally in this context.

With its planet detection efficiency reaching a maximum for orbital radii between 1 and 10 AU, microlensing provides a unique sensitivity to planetary systems similar to our own around galactic and even extragalactic stars acting as lenses on observed background stars, and in particular can detect terrestrial planets in the habitable zone. We calculate the transverse momentum dependence of the medium-induced gluon energy distribution radiated off massive quarks in spatially extended QCD matter. In the absence of a medium, the distribution shows a characteristic mass-dependent depletion of the gluon radiation for angles smaller than m/E, the so-called dead cone effect. Medium-modifications of this spectrum are calculated as a function of quark mass, initial quark energy, in-medium pathlength and density. Generically,...

The angle-dependences of the magnetoresistance of two different isotopic substitutions (deuterated and undeuterated) of the layered organic superconductor \kappa-(ET)2Cu(NCS)2 are presented. The angle dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) arising from the quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) and quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) Fermi surfaces in this material are often confused. By using the Boltzman transport equation extensive simulations of the AMRO are made that reveal the subtle differences...
