EA1 is an abundant, highly antigenic, surface layer protein of Bacillus anthracis vegetative cells. Recent studies indicate that EA1 is also a component of B. anthracis spores and a potential marker for spore detection. We show here that EA 1 is not a spore component but a persistent contaminant in spore preparations.

Assuming equation of state for quintessential matter: $p=w(z)\rho$, we analyse dynamical behaviour of the scale factor in FRW cosmologies. It is shown that its dynamics is formally equivalent to that of a classical particle under the action of 1D potential $V(a)$. It is shown that Hamiltonian method can be easily implemented to obtain a classification of all cosmological solutions in the phase space as well as in the configurational space. Examples taken from modern cosmology illustrate the...

The branching random walk (BRW) smoothing transform $T$ is defined as $T:\text{distr}(U_{1})\mapsto \text{distr} (\sum_{i=1}^{L}X_{i}U_{i})$, where given realizations $\{X_{i}\}_{i=1}^{L}$ of a point process, $U_{1},U_{2},...$ are conditionally independent identically distributed random variables, and $0\leq \text{Prob}\{L=\infty \}\leq 1$. Given $\alpha \in (0,1]$, $\alpha$-\emph{elementary} fixed points are fixed points of $T$ whose Laplace-Stieltjes transforms $\phi$ satisfy $\underset{s\to...

If $P\subset \R^d$ is a rational polytope, then $i_P(n):=#(nP\cap \Z^d)$ is a quasi-polynomial in $n$, called the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of $P$. The period of $i_P(n)$ must divide $\LL(P)= \min \{n \in \Z_{> 0} \colon nP \text{is an integral polytope}\}$. Few examples are known where the period is not exactly $\LL(P)$. We show that for any $\LL$, there is a 2-dimensional triangle $P$ such that $\LL(P)=\LL$ but such that the period of $i_P(n)$ is 1, that is, $i_P(n)$ is a polynomial in $n$....

Current recommendations for achieving high quality professional development for teachers include the creation of a professional learning community wherein each member of the educational community--student, teacher, parent, community, principal, and staff--is both teacher and learner. Key to the success of this approach, however, is the role of the peer mentor or coach. This study was designed to determine what it takes to be a successful professional development coach by gathering data based on...

The Fluctuation Theorem and the Jarzynski equality are examined in the light of recent experimental tests. For a particle dragged through a solvent, it is shown that $Q,$ the heat exchanged with the reservoir, obeys the asymptotic Fluctuation Theorem but not the Jarzynski equality, due to slowly decaying tails in its distribution. For molecular stretching experiments, substantial corrections to the Jarzynski equality can result from not measuring the force at the end of the molecule that is...

We prove that strictly stationary spacetimes cannot contain closed trapped nor marginally trapped surfaces. The result is purely geometric and holds in arbitrary dimension. Other results concerning the interplay between (generalized) symmetries and trapped submanifolds are also presented.

In this thesis we study two important phenomenological issues in the context of supersymmetric gauge theories. In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) we analyze properties of the neutral Higgs boson decays into two neutralinos. In the second part of our work we study in detail the Proton decay in the Minimal Supersymmetric SU(5) Theory.

We show that some higher derivative theories have a BRST symmetry. This symmetry is due to the higher derivative structure and is not associated to any gauge invariance. If physical states are defined as those in the BRST cohomology then the only physical state is the vacuum. All negative norm states, characteristic of higher derivative theories, are removed from the physical sector. As a consequence, unitarity is recovered but the S-matrix is trivial. We show that a class of higher derivative...

We report the possible discovery of multiple gravitationally-lensed images of QSOs with angular separations on arcminute scales. The QSOs were selected from the completed 2dF QSO survey as having redshifts and optical colours which are statistically consistent. In this paper we present higher-quality optical spectra of the candidates and discuss the likelihood of their genuinely being systems lensed by massive clusters of galaxies. From a comparison of the spectra it appears that up to six...

We present a unifying theory for the observed complex structures of the sp-bonded elements under pressure based on nearly free electron picture (NFE). In the intermediate pressure regime the dominant contribution to crystal structure arises from Fermi-surface Brillouin zone (FSBZ) interactions - structures which allow this are favoured. This simple theory explains the observed crystal structures, transport properties, the evolution of internal and unit cell parameters with pressure. We...

Electromagnetic radiation produced by avalanches in the magnetization reversal of Mn12-Acetate has been measured. Short bursts of radiation have been detected, with intensity significantly exceeding the intensity of the black-body radiation from the sample. The model based upon superradiance from inversely populated spin levels has been suggested.

Electron properties of Carbon nanotubes in a transverse magnetic field are studied using a model of a massless Dirac particle on a cylinder. The problem possesses supersymmetry which protects low energy states and ensures stability of the metallic behavior in arbitrarily large fields. In metallic tubes we find suppression of the Fermi velocity at half-filling and enhancement of the density of states. In semiconducting tubes the energy gap is suppressed. These features qualitatively persist...

We examine the relationship between environment and the luminosities, surface brightnesses, colors, and profile shapes of luminous galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). For the SDSS sample, galaxy color is the galaxy property most predictive of the local environment. Galaxy color and luminosity jointly comprise the most predictive pair of properties. At fixed luminosity and color, density is not closely related to surface brightness or to Sersic index -- the parameter in this study...

We study the relation between radio halos, the energy input by supernovae in the disk and the galaxy mass. We find that both the energy input by supernovae as well as the galaxy mass are important parameters for understanding the formation of radio halos. Galaxies with a high energy input by supernovae per star forming area and a low galaxy mass generally possess radio halos whereas galaxies with the opposite characteristics do not. Furthermore, there is a tentative correlation between the...

We report on a systematic study of electronic transport in tetracene single crystals by means of space charge limited current spectroscopy and time of flight measurements. Both $I$-$V$ and time of flight measurements show that the room-temperature effective hole-mobility reaches values close to $\mu \simeq 1$ cm$^2$/Vs and show that, within a range of temperatures, the mobility increases with decreasing temperature. The experimental results further allow the characterization of different...
