Windows 95/98/ME/XP theme Read Me file: This desktop theme package is based on the movie series "Friday the 13th". It contains ten wallpapers for ten desktop themes (depending on which movie you prefer) and all share icons, cursors (regular & animated), startup & shutdown screens, webviews, sounds and a color scheme. The theme was created with Desktop Architect and zipped using WinZip 8.0. It should be extracted into "C:/". The files will end up in "C:/Program...

According to Belinsky, Khalatnikov and Lifshitz, gravity near a space-like singularity reduces to a set of decoupled one-dimensional mechanical models at each point in space. We point out that these models fall into a class of conformal mechanical models first introduced by de Alfaro, Fubini and Furlan (DFF). The deformation used by DFF to render the spectrum discrete corresponds to a negative cosmological constant. The wave function of the universe is the zero-energy eigenmode of the...

We define a class of multivariate Laurent polynomials closely related to Chebyshev polynomials, and prove the simple but somewhat surprising (in view of the fact that the signs of the coefficients of the Chebyshev polynomials themselves alternate) result that their coefficients are non-negative.

We consider the evidence for very hard low energy spectra during the prompt phase of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB). In particular we examine the spectral evolution of GRB 980306 together with the detailed analysis of some other bursts already presented in the literature (GRB 911118, GRB 910807, GRB 910927 and GRB 970111), and check for the significance of their hardness by applying different tests. The hard spectra of these bursts and their evolution constrain several non--thermal emission models,...

We have observed the dark cloud Barnard 68 with SCUBA at 850 um and with SIMBA at 1.2 mm. The submillimetre and millimetre dust emission correlate well with the extinction map of Alves, Lada and Lada (2001).The A_V/850um correlation is clearly not linear and suggests lower temperatures for the dust in the inner core of the cloud. Assuming a model for the temperature gradient, we derive the cloud-averaged dust emissivities (normalised to the V-Band extinction efficiency) at 850 um and 1.2 mm. We...

Using magnetocapacitance data in tilted magnetic fields, we directly determine the chemical potential jump in a strongly correlated two-dimensional electron system in silicon when the filling factor traverses the spin and the cyclotron gaps. The data yield an effective g-factor that is close to its value in bulk silicon and does not depend on filling factor. The cyclotron splitting corresponds to the effective mass that is strongly enhanced at low electron densities.

This is a tool for calculating, teaching and displaying IP subnets. You can enter and view host addresses in decimal or binary format, or by using vertical scroll arrows. You can use "classless" addressing by checking a box and then using a horizontal scroll bar to change the number of bits used for the network, or through direct entry of the number of bits used for the network. Different colors distinguish different address classes and components, and you can display network and...

Windows 95/98/ME/XP theme Read Me file: ArrowsF1 - 2002 Theme V1.0 Thankyou for installing the ArrowsF1 - 2002 Theme. This theme is designed for any of the Arrows Formula 1 fans out there (...unfortunately they have gone bankrupt and left the competition so it is actually more of a comemorative theme!!) or anyone who just wants to make their computer feel heaps groovy. It is suggested that you also think about downloading a seperate program like Webshots which you can set to automatically...

Critical fluctuations above $T_c$ are studied in the microwave complex conductivity of BSCCO-2212, BSCCO-2223, and YBCO thin films. The analysis of the experimental data yields the temperature dependences of the reduced coherence length $\xi(T)/\xi_0$. Two critical regimes are observed, having the static critical exponent $\nu=1$ close to $T_c$, and a crosover to $\nu=2/3$ at higher temperatures. In more anisotropic superconductors the reduced coherence lengths are larger, and the critical...

Refining the notion of an ideal triangulation of a compact three-manifold, we provide in this paper a combinatorial presentation of the set of pairs (M,a), where M is a three-manifold and a is a collection of properly embedded arcs. We also show that certain well-understood combinatorial moves are sufficient to relate to each other any two refined triangulations representing the same (M,a). Our proof does not assume the Matveev-Pergallini calculus for ideal triangulations, and actually easily...

Using the explicit numerical solution of the axially-symmetric Gross-Pitaevskii equation we study the oscillation of the Bose-Einstein condensate induced by a periodic variation in the atomic scattering length $a$. When the frequency of oscillation of $a$ is an even multiple of the radial or axial trap frequency, respectively, the radial or axial oscillation of the condensate exhibits resonance with novel feature. In this nonlinear problem without damping, at resonance in the steady state the...

We present B, V photometric data of the Carina Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy collected with the Wide Field Imager (WFI) available at the 2.2m MPI/ESO telescope. We briefly discuss the main features of the color magnitude diagram and in particular the mix of stellar populations present in this galaxy. A preliminary analysis of the spatial distribution of these populations over a substantial fraction of the body of the galaxy is also presented.

Using non-relativistic many body quantum field theory, a master equation is derived for the reduced density matrix of a dilute gas of massive particles undergoing scattering interactions with an environment of light particles. The dynamical variable that naturally decoheres (the pointer basis) is essentially the local number density of the dilute gas. Earlier master equations for this sort of system (such as that derived by Joos and Zeh) are recovered on restricting to the one-particle sector...
