We investigate the spectra of a family of pairs (M_i,A_i) consisting of a complete Riemannian manifold M_i and a closed subset A_i and which converge in the Lipschitz topology to a pair (M,A). This is used to construct manifolds of bounded curvature, nonempty essential spectrum, infinitely many eigenvalues below the essential spectrum and with an arbitrary number of such eigenvlues of arbitrarily high multiplicity.

The classical "generalized principal ideal theorems" of Macaulay, Eagon-Northcott, and others give sharp bounds on the heights of determinantal ideals in arbitrary rings. But in regular local rings (or graded polynomial rings) these are far from sharp, and various questions about vector bundles, as well as other questions in commutative algebra, amount to asking what the real bounds are. We give partial answers, and more generally we prove new height bounds in local rings of given...

Motivated by a recent experiment [J. Eschner {\it et al.}, Nature {\bf 413}, 495 (2001)], we now present a theoretical study on the fluorescence of an atom in front of a mirror. On the assumption that the presence of the distant mirror and a lens imposes boundary conditions on the electric field in a plane close to the atom, we derive the intensities of the emitted light as a function of an effective atom-mirror distance. The results obtained are in good agreement with the experimental findings.

We report new infrared spectroscopic observations of cool DQ white dwarfs by using Coolspec on the 2.7m Harlan-Smith Telescope. DQs have helium-rich atmospheres with traces of molecular carbon thought to be the result of convective dredge-up from their C/O interiors. Recent model calculations predict that oxygen should also be present in DQ atmospheres in detectable amounts. Our synthetic spectra calculations for He-rich white dwarfs with traces of C and O indicate that CO should be easily...

Brian May spent his childhood in Feltham near London and he learnt his first chords on his father's ukelele banjo. He soon progressed to the guitar, which he started learning when he was eight. He perfected his technique by buying records and copying the trickiest guitar parts. Although Brian's dream was to be a guitarist, it didn't seem like a reality so, encouraged by his parents, he went to London University's Imperial College to study physics. Whilst there he continued playing in bands with...

This study examined the Internet's impact on college students' daily lives and the impact of that use on their academic and social routines. Students from 27 colleges and universities participated. The sample was tested and found to be reflective of the national population of college students. Roughly half the students were given a questionnaire asking questions about their academic use of the Internet; and half were given a questionnaire dealing with their social uses of the Internet. In all,...

Recent interest in propellants with non-toxic reaction products has led to a resurgence of interest in hydrogen peroxide for various propellant applications. Because peroxide is sensitive to contaminants, material interactions, stability and storage issues, monitoring decomposition rates is important. Stennis Space Center (SSC) uses thermocouples to monitor bulk fluid temperature (heat evolution) to determine reaction rates. Unfortunately, large temperature rises are required to offset the heat...

We present a multi-wavelength study of the star forming region ISOSS J 20298+3559, which was identified by a cross-correlation of cold compact sources from the 170 micron ISOPHOT Serendipity Survey (ISOSS) database coinciding with objects detected by the MSX, 2MASS and IRAS infrared surveys. ISOSS J 20298+3559 is associated with a massive dark cloud complex (M ~ 760 M$_{\odot}$) and located in the Cygnus X giant molecular cloud. We derive a distance of 1800 pc on the basis of optical extinction...

Run-off from flooding in southern France is evidenced by the streaks of brown-green silt in the waters of the Golfe du Lion on the Mediterranean Sea. This series of images from Aqua and Terra MODIS shows the area before the floods (August 14) and in true- and false-color on September 11 and 15, 2002. Torrential rains earlier in the week led to the severe flooding along tributaries of the Rhone River that killed as many as 26 people and forced hundreds from their homes.Silt displaced by the...

Schr\"odinger equation with given, {\it a priori} known current is formulated. A non-zero current density is maintained in the quantum system via a subsidiary condition imposed by vector, local Lagrange multiplier. Constrained minimization of the total energy on the manifold of an arbitrary current density topology results into a non-linear self-consistent Schr\"odinger equation. The applications to electronic transport in two-terminal molecular devices are developed and new...

If a cat, a cannonball, and an economics textbook are all dropped from the same height, they fall to the ground with exactly the same acceleration under the influence of gravity. This equality of gravitational accelerations of different things is one of the most accurately tested laws of physics. That law, however, tells us little about cats, cannonballs, or economics. This lecture expands on this theme to address the question of what features of our world are predicted by a fundamental...

A multiscale scheme combining molecular dynamics (MD) and microscopic phase-field theory is proposed to study the structural phase transformations in solids with inhomogeneous strain field. The approach calculates strain response based on MD and atomic diffusion based on the phase field theory. Simulations with the new technique are conducted in two examples. The first involves interface roughening in a Co/Cu thin film, where interfacial undulations due to lattice mismatch is demonstrated. The...
