The BTeV experiment is a b-physics experiment designed to conduct precision tests of the CKM description of CP violation and study rare processes involving bottom and charm hadrons. The experiment will be located in the C0 interaction region at the Fermilab Tevatron, and is intended to begin data-taking around 2007-2008. One of the most important elements of the BTeV spectrometer is the ring-imaging Cerenkov detector (RICH) which is used for particle identification. In this article we describe...

Paraldor is an experiment in bringing the power of categorical languages to lattice QCD computations. Our target language is Aldor, which allows the capture of the mathematical structure of physics directly in the structure of the code using the concepts of categories, domains and their inter-relationships in a way which is not otherwise possible with current popular languages such as Fortran, C, C++ or Java. By writing high level physics code portably in Aldor, and implementing switchable...

Non-commutative (NC) field theories can be mapped onto twisted matrix models. This mapping enables their Monte Carlo simulation, where the large N limit of the matrix models describes the continuum limit of NC field theory. First we present numeric results for 2d NC gauge theory of rank 1, which turns out to be renormalizable. The area law for the Wilson loop holds at small area, but at large area we observe a rotating phase, which corresponds to an Aharonov-Bohm effect. Next we investigate the...

The R algorithm is widely used for simulating two flavours of dynamical staggered fermions. We give a simple proof that the algorithm converges to the desired probability distribution to within O(dt^2) errors, but show that the relevant expansion parameter is (dt/m)^2, m being the quark mass. The Rational Hybrid Monte Carlo (RHMC) algorithm provides an exact (i.e., has no step size errors) alternative for simulating the square root of the staggered Dirac operator. We propose using it to test...

Running of gauge couplings on a slice of AdS5 is examined using the deconstruction set-up. Logarithmic running instead of (linear) power law is justified when the cutoff is lower than the curvature scale. Most of interesting features in warped gauge theory including the localization of Kaluza-Klein modes, the widening of higher Kaluza-Klein spectrum spacing are well captured within the framework of the deconstruction.

In nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC, partons produced at high transverse momentum can undergo multiple scattering within the collision region prior to fragmenting into hadrons. We have studied the resulting medium-modified fragmentation function based on a calculation of the BDMPS-Z medium-induced gluon radiation for a dense, expanding medium of small finite extension. Here we explain how the BDMPS transport coefficient which measures the energy density attained in the collision, can...

We propose a new numerical procedure to simulate a single dark halo of any size and mass in a hierarchical framework coupling the extended Press-Schechter formalism (EPSF) to N-body simulations. The procedure consists of assigning cosmological initial conditions to the particles of a single halo with a EPSF technique and following only the dynamical evolution using a serial N-body code. The computational box is fixed with a side of $0.5 h^{-1}$ Mpc. This allows to simulate galaxy cluster halos...

Analytical investigation of time-dependent accretion in disks is carried out. We consider a time-dependent disk in a binary system at outburst which has a fixed tidally-truncated outer radius. The standard Shakura-Sunyaev model of the disk is considered. The vertical structure of the disk is accurately described in two regimes of opacity: Thomson and free-free. Fully analytical solutions are obtained, characterized by power-law variations of accretion rate with time. The solutions supply...

We study the correlation between CP violation in neutrino oscillations and leptogenesis in the framework with two heavy Majorana neutrinos and three light neutrinos. Among three unremovable CP phases, a heavy Majorana phase contributes to leptogenesis. We show how the heavy Majorana phase contributes to Jarlskog determinant $J$ as well as neutrinoless double $\beta$ decay by identifying a low energy CP violating phase which signals the CP violating phase for leptogenesis. For some specific...

We carry out a theoretical study of the vibrational and relaxation properties of naturally-occurring proteins with the purpose of characterizing both the folding and equilibrium thermodynamics. By means of a suitable model we provide a full characterization of the spectrum and eigenmodes of vibration at various temperatures by merely exploiting the knowledge of the protein native structure. It is shown that the rate at which perturbations decay at the folding transition correlates well with...

When studying convergence of measures, an important issue is the choice of probability metric. In this review, we provide a summary and some new results concerning bounds among ten important probability metrics/distances that are used by statisticians and probabilists. We focus on these metrics because they are either well-known, commonly used, or admit practical bounding techniques. We summarize these relationships in a handy reference diagram, and also give examples to show how rates of...

We present the ingredients for determining $K^{+}\to\pi^{+}\pi^{0}$ matrix elements via the combination of lattice QCD and chiral perturbation theory ($\chi$PT). By simulating these matrix elements at unphysical kinematics, it is possible to determine all the low-energy constants (LECs) for constructing the physical $K^{+}\to\pi^{+}\pi^{0}$ amplitudes at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the chiral expansion. In this work, the one-loop chiral corrections are calculated for arbitrary meson...

We obtain, in a systematic way, all the classical BPS equations which correspond to the quantum BPS states in the M-theory on a fully supersymmetric pp-wave. The superalgebra of the M-theory matrix model shows that the BPS states always preserve pairs of supersymmetry, implying the possible fractions of the unbroken supersymmetry as 2/16, 4/16, 6/16,.... We study their classical counterparts, and find there are essentially one unique set of 2/16 BPS equations, three inequivalent types of 4/16...

Using this information, we were able to determine the evolution of the THz absorption to study...

We present a study of the superfluid properties of atomic Bose gases in optical lattice potentials using the Bose-Hubbard model. To do this, we use a microscopic definition of the superfluid fraction based on the response of the system to a phase variation imposed by means of twisted boundary conditions. We compare the superfluid fraction to other physical quantities, i.e., the interference pattern after ballistic expansion, the quasi-momentum distribution, and number fluctuations. We have...

We present a variational formalism for describing the dynamical evolution of an oscillating star with a point-mass companion in the linear, non-relativistic regime. This includes both the excitation of normal modes and the back-reaction of the modes on the orbit. The general formalism for arbitrary fluid configurations is presented, and then specialized to a homentropic potential flow. Our formalism explicitly identifies and conserves both energy and angular momentum. We also consider...

We consider a one-parameter family of non-evolutionary partial differential equations which includes the integrable Camassa-Holm equation and a new equation first isolated by Degasperis and Procesi. A Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulation is presented for the whole family of equations, and we discuss how this fits into a bi-Hamiltonian framework in the integrable cases. The Hamiltonian dynamics of peakons and some other special finite-dimensional reductions are also described.

We discuss the origin of two classes of germinal centers that have been observed during humoral immune responses: Some germinal centers develop very well and give rise to a large number of high affinity antibody producing plasma cells. Other germinal center reaction are very weak and the output production is practically absent. We propose an explanation for this nearly all-or-none behavior of germinal center reactions: The affinity of the seeder B-cells to the antigen is the critical parameter...

We compute the dominant new physics contributions to the processes Z -> b b and B - B in the context of two representative models with extra dimensions. The main thrust of the calculations focuses on how to control the effects of the infinite tower of Kaluza-Klein modes inside the relevant one-loop diagrams. By comparing the results with the existing experimental data, most importantly those for Rb, we show that one may derive interesting lower bounds on the size of the compactification...

In this work the charm and bottom quark masses are determined from QCD moment sum rules for the charmonium and upsilon systems. In our analysis we include both the results from non-relativistic QCD and perturbation theory at next-next-to-leading order. For the pole masses we obtain $M_c=1.75\pm 0.15$ GeV and $M_b=4.98\pm 0.125$ GeV. Using the potential-subtracted mass in intermediate steps of the calculation the MS-masses are determined to $m_c(m_c) = 1.19 \pm 0.11$ GeV and $m_b(m_b) = 4.24 \pm...

Diffractive parton-parton scattering in the soft pomeron regime can be explained by the production of a QCD sphaleron. Sphaleron production results into the emission of $3+2N_F$ gluons and quarks. At RHIC we expect many sphalerons to be released thereby affecting most prompt processes.
