Bone loss represents one of the most significant effects of space flight on the human body. Understanding the mechanisms underlying this loss is critical for maintaining crew health and safety during and after flight. This investigation documents the changes in bone metabolism and calcium kinetics during and after space flight. We previously reported calcium studies on three subjects during and after a 115-d stay on the Russian space station Mir. We report here data on an additional three...

The University of Wisconsin and Louisiana State University have teamed to study the forcing of winter season cold frontal wind systems on sediment distribution patterns and geomorphology in the Louisiana coastal zone. Wind systems associated with cold fronts have been shown to modify coastal circulation and resuspend sediments along the microtidal Louisiana coast. The assessment includes quantifying the influence of cumulative winter season atmospheric forcing (through surface wind...

The EGRET instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (1991-2000) has positively detected high energy gamma-ray emission from more than 67 active galaxies of the blazar class. The majority of the EGRET blazars are flat-spectrum radio quasars, which are characterized by inferred isotropic luminosities often as high as 3E49 ergs/s. The remainder are BL Lac objects, some of which have been detected at TeV energies (> 250 GeV) by ground-based atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. One of the...

Symmetry based approaches to the black hole entropy problem have a number of attractive features; in particular they are very general and do not depend on the details of the quantization method. However we point out that, of the two available approaches, one faces conceptual problems (also emphasized by others), while the second contains certain technical flaws. We correct these errors and, within the new, improved scheme, calculate the entropy of 3-dimensional black holes. We find that, while...

Predictions for systems in entangled states cannot be described in local realistic terms. However, after admixing some noise such a description is possible. We show that for two quNits (quantum systems described by N dimensional Hilbert spaces) in a maximally entangled state the minimal admixture of noise increases monotonically with N. The results are a direct extension of those of Kaszlikowski et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 85}, 4418 (2000), where results for $N\leq 9$ were presented. The...

We study the electron spectral function of various zero-temperature spin-charge separated phases in two dimensions. In these phases, the electron is not a fundamental excitation of the system, but rather ``decays'' into a spin-1/2 chargeless fermion (the spinon) and a spinless charge e boson (the chargon). Using low-energy effective theories for the spinons (d-wave pairing plus possible N\'{e}el order), and the chargons (condensed or quantum disordered bosons), we explore three phases of...

One interesting class of gravitational radiation sources includes rapidly rotating astrophysical objects that encounter dynamical instabilities. We have carried out a set of simulations of rotationally induced instabilities in differentially rotating polytropes. An $n$=1.5 polytrope with the Maclaurin rotation law will encounter the $m$=2 bar instability at $T/|W| \gtrsim 0.27$. Our results indicate that the remnant of this instability is a persistent bar-like structure that emits a long-lived...

Develop experimentally calibrated predictive computer modeling capabilities that would bridge the multiple material and structural scales and there by significantly reduce development costs. This will allow, for the first time, an integrated approach wherein structures and materials would be designed as a system. This is motivated by the fact that in an aircraft the behavior of structure is governed by both material and structural response; often these two levels are highly coupled. The pathway...

Moving mirrors are submitted to reaction forces by vacuum fields. The motional force is known to vanish for a single mirror uniformly accelerating in vacuum. We show that inertial forces (proportional to accelerations) arise in the presence of a second scatterer, exhibiting properties expected for a relative inertia: the mass corrections depend upon the distance between the mirrors, and each mirror experiences a force proportional to the acceleration of the other one. When the two mirrors move...

The decay of 16-N is used to cross check the absolute energy scale calibration for solar neutrinos established by the electron linear accelerator (LINAC). A deuterium-tritium neutron generator was employed to create 16-N via the (n,p) reaction on 16-O in the water of the detector. This technique is isotropic and has different systematic uncertainties than the LINAC. The results from this high statistics data sample agree with the absolute energy scale of the LINAC to better than 1%. A natural...

We present the basic aspects of deep inelastic phenomena in the framework of the QCD parton model. After recalling briefly the standard kinematics, we discuss the physical interpretation of unpolarized and polarized structure functions in terms of parton distributions together with several important sum rules. We also make a rapid survey of the experimental situation together with phenomenological tests, in particular concerning various QCD predictions. In the summary, we try to identify some...

We focus on the analysis of the probability distribution and the autocorrelation function of the attendance over a time interval in the efficient phase of the game. In this regime both the probability distribution and the autocorrelation function are shown to have similar behaviour for time differences corresponding to multiples of...

This report documents an AFOSR study performed by the UF GERC for a high speed diagnostic tool for characterizing the behind-armor effects of various armor defeating munitions. Regions behind the armor are continuously monitored with laser beams and photo-detectors so that passing fragments are detected when they temporarily shadow the detector outputs. During an event, all information is stored on a high speed, CCD detector based camera that is produced so as to store the high speed temporal...

Narrow antiresonances going to zero transmission are found to occur for general (2n,0)(n,n)(2n,0) carbon nanotube heterostructures, whereas the complementary configuration, (n,n)(2n,0)(n,n), displays simple resonant tunneling behaviour. We compute examples for different cases, and give a simple explanation for the appearance of antiresonances in one case but not in the other. Conditions and ranges for the occurrence of these different behaviors are stated. The phenomenon of anti-resonant...

We propose a new approach to performing ultrafast directional beam switching using two coupled Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs). The proposed strategy is demonstrated for two VCSELs of 5.6 microns in diameter placed about 1 micron apart from the edges, showing a switching speed of 42 GHz with a maximum far-field angle span of about 10 degrees.

This paper presents a comprehensive experimental study of the loop operating temperature in a loop heat pipe (LHP) which has two parallel evaporators and two parallel condensers. In a single evaporator LHP, it is well known that the loop operating temperature is a function of the heat load, the sink temperature and the ambient temperature. The objective of the present study emphasizes on the stability of the loop operating temperature and parameters that affects the loop operation. Tests...

Studying the properties of the solvent around proteins, we propose a much more sophisticated model of solvation than temperature-independent pairwise interactions between monomers, as is used commonly in lattice representations. We applied our model of solvation to a 16-monomer chain constrained on a two-dimensional lattice. We compute a phase diagram function of the temperature and a solvent parameter which is related to the pH of the solution. It exhibits a native state in which the chain...

Let N be an o-minimal structure. In this paper we develop group extension and group cohomology theory over N and use it to describe the N-definable solvable groups. We prove an o-minimal analogue of the Lie-Kolchin-Mal'cev theorem and we describe the N-definable G-modules and the N-definable rings.

A zeoponic plant-growth system is defined as the cultivation of plants in artificial soils, which have zeolites as a major component (Allen and Ming, 1995). Zeolites are crystalline, hydrated aluminosilicate minerals that have the ability to exchange constituent cations without major change of the mineral structure. Recently, zeoponic systems developed at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) slowly release some (Allen et at., 1995) or all of the essential plant-growth...
