KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- A Rough-legged hawk stares at the landscape from a perch in a tree in the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. This type of hawk is rarely seen in Florida, ranging from northern Alaska through Manitoba and Newfoundland and wintering from California east to Virginia. The 92,000-acre refuge, which shares a boundary with the Kennedy Space Center, is habitat for more than 310 species of birds, 25 mammals, 117 fishes and 65 amphibians and reptiles

We report high resolution angle-scanned photoemission and Fermi surface (FS) mapping experiments on the layered transition-metal dichalcogenide 1T-TaS_2 in the quasi commensurate (QC) and the commensurate (C) charge-density-wave (CDW) phase. Instead of a nesting induced partially removed FS in the CDW phase we find a pseudogap over large portions of the FS. This remnant FS exhibits the symmetry of the one-particle normal state FS even when passing from the QC-phase to the C-phase. Possibly,...

We study phase coherent transport in a single channel system using the scattering matrix approach. It is shown that identical vanishing of the transmission amplitude occurs generically in quasi-1D systems if the time-reversal is a good symmetry. The transmission zeros naturally lead to abrupt phase changes (without any intrinsic energy scale) and in-phase resonances, providing insights to recent experiments on phase coherent transport through a quantum dot.

We study some aspects of short-distance interaction between parallel D3-branes in type 0 string theory as described by the corresponding world-volume gauge theory. We compute the one-loop effective potential in the non-supersymmetric SU(N) x SU(N) gauge theory (which is a Z_2 projection of the U(2N) n=4 SYM theory) representing dyonic branes composed of N electric and N magnetic D3-branes. The branes of the same type repel at short distances, but an electric and a magnetic brane attract, and...

Long ago appeared a discussion in quantum mechanics of the problem of opening a completely absorbing shutter on which were impinging a stream of particles of definite velocity. The solution of the problem was obtained in a form entirely analogous to the optical one of diffraction by a straight edge. The argument of the Fresnel integrals was though time dependent and thus the first part in the title of this article. In section 1 we briefly review the original formulation of the problem of...

The abelian Chern-Simons theory is perturbed by introducing local gauge-invariant interaction terms depending on the curvature. The computation of the correlation function of two Wilson lines for two smooth closed nonintersecting curves is reported up to four loops and is shown to be unaffected by radiative corrections. This result ensures the stability of the linking number of the two curves with respect to the local perturbations which may be added to the Chern-Simons action.

We attempt to systematically derive perturbative quantum corrections to the Berry diagonal approximation of the two-level correlation function (TLCF) for chaotic systems. To this end, we develop a ``weak diagonal approximation'' based on a recent description of the first weak localisation correction to conductance in terms of the Gutzwiller trace formula. This semiclassical method is tested by using it to derive the weak localisation corrections to the TLCF for a semiclassically disordered...

A new algorithm for calculating the spin tune and the n-axis for circular accelerators is presented. The method resembles the one employed in the existing program code SODOM in that one-turn numerical spin maps at equally spaced orbit angle variables are used but it is more efficient than the latter. Furthermore, it is applicable at large openning angles of the n-axis, whereas the existing SODOM only converges for small angles.

The symmetric distribution and all other states in the symmetry sector of the frequency trajectory increase mean fitness during competitive replication at sublinear propagation rates (parabolic time course). States in the non-symmetry sector, by contrast, produce negative time variations in mean fitness. The polymorphic steady state attained in sublinear systems is destabilised by formation of a variant with above threshold fitness. Evolution in the post-steady state interval increases...

We study the properties of the electroweak theory in the vicinity of the critical point --- the endpoint of the first order phase transition line that exists in a wide class of theories, including the Standard Model and a part of the parameter space of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We find that the critical point belongs to the 3d Ising universality class. The endpoint in the Standard Model is located at the Higgs mass below the existing experimental lower bound, implying that...

We solve exactly the non-Markovian dynamics of a cavity mode in the presence of a feedback loop based on homodyne measurements, in the case of a non-zero feedback delay time. With an appropriate choice of the feedback parameters, this scheme is able to significantly increase the decoherence time of the cavity mode, even for delay times not much smaller than the decoherence time itself.

A natural family of quantized matrix algebras is introduced. It includes the two best studied such. Located inside ${\s U}_q(A_{2n-1})$, it consists of quadratic algebras with the same Hilbert series as polynomials in $n^2$ variables. We discuss their general properties and investigate some members of the family in great detail with respect to associated varieties, degrees, centers, and symplectic leaves. Finally, the space of rank r matrices becomes a Poisson submanifold, and there is an...

OS was quantified by indirect measures of lipid peroxidation and DNA alteration. The efficacy of the vitamins was assessed as reduced urinary, blood, and breath indices of lipid peroxidation. Seventy-five Marines were assigned to 1 of 5 groups for a double-blind, 14-day study. The groups took, daily: (1) 500 mg ascorbic...

We study the surface photometry for 13 single-nucleus ultraluminous IRAS galaxies (ULIRGs), selected from a parent sample of 58 galaxies obtained in a Hubble Space Telescope snapshot survey. We find that these galaxies can be classified into three classes according to their surface photometry. The surface brightness profiles of the four objects in the first class are well fitted by the r^{1/4} law. The isophotes are all disky at R < 1 h^{-1}kpc, consistent with the molecular disks/rings...

We study the geometry of interacting knotted solitons. The interaction is local and advances either as a three-body or as a four-body process, depending on the relative orientation and a degeneracy of the solitons involved. The splitting and adjoining is governed by a four-point vertex in combination with duality transformations. The total linking number is preserved during the interaction. It receives contributions both from the twist and the writhe, which are variable. Therefore solitons can...

We generalize the (p,q) 5-brane web construction of five-dimensional field theories by introducing (p,q) 7-branes, and apply this construction to theories with a one-dimensional Coulomb branch. The 7-branes render the exceptional global symmetry of these theories manifest. Additionally, 7-branes allow the construction of all E_n theories up to n=8, previously not possible in 5-brane configurations. The exceptional global symmetry in the field theory is a subalgebra of an affine symmetry on the...
