We show that, under reasonable hypotheses, it is possible to study two-body non-leptonic weak decays in numerical simulations of lattice QCD. By assuming that final-state interactions are dominated by the nearby resonances and that the couplings of the resonances to the final particles are smooth functions of the external momenta, it is possible indeed to overcome the difficulties imposed by the Maiani-Testa no-go theorem and to extract the weak decay amplitudes, including their phases. Under...

We attempt to correlate all of the available solar-neutrino capture-rate data with the strong magnetic fields these neutrinos encounter in the solar interior along their Earth-bound path. We approximate these fields using the (photospheric, magnetograph-measured) surface magnetic flux from central latitude bands, time delayed to proxy the solar interior. Our strongest evidence for anticorrelation is for magnetic fields within the central $\pm 5^{0}$ solar-latitude band that have been delayed by...

We analyse the electric dipole moment of the neutron in the MSSM, induced by the renormalisation of the soft-susy breaking terms. We run the RGEs using two-loop expressions for gauge and Yukawa couplings and retaining family dependence. The $\mu$ and $B$ parameters were determined by minimising the full one-loop Higgs potential, and we find that the neutron EDM lies in the range $10^{-33}

I outline various derivations of the non-Abelian Kubo equation, which governs the response of a quark-gluon plasma to hard thermal perturbations. In the static case, it is proven that gauge theories do not support hard thermal solitons. Explicit solutions are constructed within an SU(2) Ansatz and they are shown to support the general result. The time-dependent problem, i.e., non-Abelian plasma waves, has not been completely solved. We express and motivate the hope that the intimate relations...

Starting from a covariant cycle-averaged Lagrangian the relativistic oscillation center equation of motion of a point charge is deduced and analytical formulae for the ponderomotive force in a travelling wave of arbitrary strength are presented. It is further shown that the ponderomotive forces for transverse and longitudinal waves are different; in the latter, uphill acceleration can occur. In a standing wave there exists a threshold intensity above which, owing to transition to chaos, the...

We use a chiral random matrix model to investigate the effects of massive quarks on the distribution of eigenvalues of QCD inspired Dirac operators. Kalkreuter's lattice analysis of the spectrum of the massive (hermitean) Dirac operator for two colors and Wilson fermions is shown to follow from a cubic equation in the quenched approximation. The quenched spectrum shows a Mott-transition from a (delocalized) Goldstone phase softly broken by the current mass, to a (localized) heavy quark phase,...

We examine in detail radiative corrections to the lightest scalar Higgs boson mass due to the top quark and scalar quark loops in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM). We take into account the nondegenerate state for the top scalar quark masses. In our analysis, the mass matrix of the top scalar quark contains the gauge terms. Therefore our formula for the scalar Higgs boson mass matrix at the 1-loop level includes the contribution of the gauge sector as well as the effect...

We study a novel type of extensions of the Standard Model which include a hard mass term for the U(1) gauge field and, optionally, the additional scalar multiplets spontaneously violating the electric charge conservation. Contrary to the case of abelian massive electrodynamics, in these theories the massiveness of photon necessarily implies non-conservation (and also dequantization) of the electric charge (even in the absence of spontaneous breakdown of the electromagnetic symmetry). On the...

We present numerical simulations of coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations describing parametrically excited waves which reveal persistent dynamics due to the occurrence of phase slips in sequential pairs, with the second phase slip quickly following and negating the first. Of particular interest are solutions where these double phase slips occur irregularly in space and time within a spatially localized region. An effective phase diffusion equation utilizing the long term phase conservation of the...

In 1927, Carleman showed that a continuous, complex-valued function on the real line can be approximated in the Whitney topology by an entire function restricted to the real line. In this paper, we prove a similar result for proper holomorphic embeddings. Namely, we show that a proper $\cC^r$ embedding of the real line into $\C^n$ can be approximated in the strong $\cC^r$ topology by a proper holomorphic embedding of $\C$ into $\C^n$.

Edge states in the integral quantum Hall effect on a lattice are reviewed from a topological point of view. For a system with edges which is realized inevitably in an experimental situation, the Hall conductance $\sigma_{xy}$ is given by a winding number of the edge state on a complex energy surface. A relation between two topological invariants (bulk and edge) is also clarified. In a macroscopic system, mixture of the edge states are exponentially small and negligible. Quantum Coherence...

We present a spectroscopic study of the 138 field galaxies to a redshift z = 0.3 from the I-selected Canada-France Redshift Survey. 117(85%) spectra exhibit at least H alpha in emission, the remaining 21(15%) are purely absorption-line spectra. We focus our analysis on spectra with H alpha and H beta in emission, accounting for about half of this low-z sample, which we classify using emission-line ratio diagrams. Using photoionization models, we determine the extreme boundaries of H II galaxies...

In this paper we apply the jet-disk symbiosis model developed for Sgr A* to M81* -- the nucleus of the nearby galaxy M81. The model accurately predicts radio flux and size of M81* for the observed bolometric luminosity of the nuclear source with no major free parameter except for the inclination angle. We point out that the usually applied free, conical jet emission model implies a longitudinal pressure gradient that must lead to a moderate acceleration of the jet along its flow direction....

The recently found excess of high E$_T$ jets over current QCD predictions is attributed to gluon radiation at double scattering process inside a nucleon. The order of magnitude estimate of the cross section fits experimental findings rather well. The specific features of the process are discussed. Various similar hadronic effects related to the short radiation length are described.

In the electroweak phase transition there arises the problem of baryon number washout by sphaleron transitions, which can be avoided if the phase transition is strongly enough first order. The phase transition in the Standard Model or in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model seems to be too weak to suppress the sphaleron transitions sufficiently. We report here on an investigation of the Next to Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, NMSSM, which contains a Higgs singlet N in addition to...

By resorting to the Fock--Bargmann representation, we incorporate the quantum Weyl--Heisenberg algebra, $q$-WH, into the theory of entire analytic functions. The $q$--WH algebra operators are realized in terms of finite difference operators in the $z$ plane. In order to exhibit the relevance of our study, several applications to different cases of physical interest are discussed: squeezed states and the relation between coherent states and theta functions on one side, lattice quantum mechanics...
