We compare the dense molecular gas content in two barred spiral galaxies, NGC 6764 (classified LINER) and NGC 5430 (a Wolf-Rayet galaxy). We find a significant difference in the proportion of dense molecular gas between the two galaxies. CS(3-2) is detected in NGC 6764 but not in NGC 5430, even though the intensities of CO(2-1) and HCN(1-0) are higher in the latter galaxy. The non detection in NGC 5430 indicates that the CS abundance in that galaxy is unusually low, or that HCN is subthermally...

This study investigated the development of students' abilities to see connections between algebraic equations and life-situated relationships during an extended problem solving experience. The design problem required students to analyze some aspect of their socio-physical environment for cause and effect and to generate a dynamic model using the MicroWorlds Project Builder programming environment. Eighth grade students (n=49) participated as subjects in a posttest only, intervention/control...

The commonality of Unix-based open systems has greatly advanced software portability, sharing and interoperability. The MSO project exploited that commonality in constructing two object managers (OM) layered on modern operating systems: one for C++ and one for Common Lisp programs. Both incorporate comprehensive support for persistence of all language object types, data evolution, and distributed implementation and access. Key to the MSO approach is viewing object management as an instance of...

The ``normal'' analysis of $\pbar p$ and $pp$ elastic scattering uses a `spinless' Coulomb amplitude, \ie a Rutherford amplitude ($2\sqrt{\pi}\alpha/t$) multiplied by a Coulomb form factor $G^2(t)$, an {\em ansatz} that pretends that the nucleon does not have any magnetic scattering. In this note, we investigate the role of the anomalous magnetic moment of the nucleon, $\kappa \approx 1.79$. Given the method of analysis currently used by most published experiments, we conclude that the current...

A jet algorithm must specify how to (re-)combine different partons or towers into a single four-vector. Various recombination schemes have been used experimentally to examine the transverse energy profile of jets in hadron colliders. Generally, the data is insensitive to which scheme is used. However, we argue that the recombination scheme previously used by the \DO\ collaboration is expected to have large perturbative corrections and should not be used for the purposes of making a quantitative...

A simple partial wave amplitude analysis of $\overline{p}p \rightarrow \pi^- \pi^+$ has been performed for data in the range p$_{\sl lab}$ = 360 -- 1000 MeV/c. Remarkably few partial waves are required to fit the data, while the number of required $J$ values barely changes over this energy range. However, the resulting set of partial wave amplitudes is not unique. We discuss possible measurements with polarized beam and target which will severely restrict and help resolve the present analysis...

Recent developments in lattice QCD calculation of flavor singlet nucleon matrix elements are reviewed. Substantial sea quark contributions are found in the $\pi$-$N\ \sigma$ term and the quark spin content of the nucleon such that the total magnitude including valence contributions is in reasonable agreement with experiments. Some problems with flavor non-singlet nucleon matrix elements are pointed out. Recent work on lattice QCD calculation of hadron scattering length is also discussed.

Starting from the Schr\"odinger-equation of a composite system, we derive unified dynamics of a classical harmonic system coupled to an arbitrary quantized system. The classical subsystem is described by random phase-space coordinates entangled with the quantized variables of the complementary subsystem. Our semiclassical equation is {\it true} in a sense that its predictions are identical to those of the fully quantized composite dynamics. This exact method applies to a broad class of...

Using recently calculated models for massive stellar evolution and supernovae coupled to a model for Galactic chemical evolution, neutron star and black hole birth functions (number of neutron stars and black holes as a function of their mass) are determined for the Milky Way Galaxy. For those stars that explode as Type II supernovae, the models give birth functions that are bimodal with peaks at 1.27 and 1.76 M\sun \ and average masses within those peaks of 1.28 and 1.73 M\sun. For those stars...

Current definitions of notions of lexical density and semantic weight are based on the division of words into closed and open classes, and on intuition. This paper develops a computationally tractable definition of semantic weight, concentrating on what it means for a word to be semantically light; the definition involves looking at the frequency of a word in particular syntactic constructions which are indicative of lightness. Verbs such as "make" and "take", when they...

We study the partition function of N=1 supersymmetric De Rham quantum mechanics on a Riemannian manifold, with a nontrivial chemical potential $\mu$ for the fermions. General arguments suggest that when $\mu \to \infty$ we should get the partition function of a free point particle. We investigate this limit by exact evaluation of the fermionic path integral. In even dimensions we find the De Witt term with a definite numerical factor. However, in odd dimensions our result is pestered by a...

The Eulerian and Lagrangian second-order perturbation theories are solved explicitly in closed forms in $\Omega \neq 1$ and $\Lambda \neq 0$ {}Friedmann-Lema\^{\i}tre models. I explicitly write the second-order theories in terms of closed one-dimensional integrals. In cosmologically interested cases ($\Lambda = 0$ or $\Omega + \lambda = 1$), they reduce to elementary functions or hypergeometric functions. For arbitrary $\Omega$ and $\Lambda$, I present accurate fitting formula which are...

It is shown that, in the bound state picture, the $\Lambda_c(2593) \to\Lambda_c\gamma$ and $\Lambda_c(2625)\to\Lambda_c\gamma$ decays are severely suppressed. On the other hand, for their bottom counterparts, which are predicted to have masses 5900 and 5926 MeV respectively, may have significant radiative branching ratio. In particular, the $\Lambda_b(5926)\to\Lambda_b\gamma$ mode may even dominate over the strong decay mode. The isospin allowed $\Lambda^{**}_Q\to\Sigma_Q\gamma$ mode is...

A variety of three-dimensional left-covariant differential calculi on the quantum group $SU_q(2)$ is considered using an approach based on global $ U(1) $ -covariance. Explicit representations of possible $q $-Lie algebras are constructed in terms of differential operators. A gauge covariant differential algebra is uniquely determined. The non-standard Leibnitz rule is obtained for a corresponding $q$-Lie algebra.

Quantum decoherence is of primary importance for relaxation to an equilibrium distribution and, accordingly, for equilibrium processes. We demonstrate how coherence breaking implies evolution to a microcanonical distribution (``microcanonical postulate'') and, on that ground, consider an adiabatic process, in which there is no thermostat. We stress its difference from a zero-polytropic process, i.e., a process with zero heat capacity but involving a thermostat. We find the distribution for the...

The functional quantum field theory, developed by Stumpf, provides the possibility to derive the quantum dynamics of a positronium gas from Coulomb interacting electrons and positrons. By this example, the method will be brought in a Clifford algebraic light, through identifying the functional space with an infinite dimensional Euclidean Clifford algebra.

Using a modification of the Zel'dovich approximation adapted to hot dark matter, the accretion of such matter onto moving cosmic string loops is studied. It is shown that a large number of $10^{12}M_\odot$ nonlinear objects will be produced by a redshift of $z=4$. These objects could be the hosts of high redshift quasars.
