We introduce soft colour interactions as a novel mechanism to understand the observed events with large rapidity gaps in $ep$ collisions at HERA. Colour exchanges between produced partons and colour-charges in the proton remnant modifies the colour structure for hadronization, such that colour singlet systems may appear well separated in rapidity. Our explicit model show characteristics of diffractive scattering, although no explicit pomeron dynamics have been introduced, and for non-gap events...

We study the evolution with redshift of the number density of Ly$\alpha$ clouds in a CDM model using numerical simulations including photo-ionization and cooling of the baryonic component. The photo-ionizing flux is consistently taken as proportional to the rate at which material cools below 5000~K in the simulation. The number density of lines with $N$(HI)~$>$~10$^{14}$~cm$^{-2}$ given by the simulation can be approximated as d$n$/d$z$~$\sim$~16.8(1+$z$)$^{0.8}$+0.687(1+z)$^{2.5}$ which...

There are currently two philosophies for building grammars and parsers -- Statistically induced grammars and Wide-coverage grammars. One way to combine the strengths of both approaches is to have a wide-coverage grammar with a heuristic component which is domain independent but whose contribution is tuned to particular domains. In this paper, we discuss a three-stage approach to disambiguation in the context of a lexicalized grammar, using a variety of domain independent heuristic techniques....

This is what the UK VHS 'Children's Pre-School Favourites' would be like if it had full episodes of programmes instead of just clips from programmes. The changes are that the 'Teddy Bear Sing-A-Long' segments have been removed due to length, the 'Fourways Farm' segment has been replaced with a full 'Tots TV' episode and there is a full episode of the 'The Wind in the Willows' instead of a segment from the 1983 film. Woolworths have specially commissioned this exclusive 80 minute compilation of...

A clinical system is being constructed to use inverse techniques to estimate the absorbed power field in the breast and chest wall during ultrasound hyperthermia. The system uses a B-mode ultrasound imager to construct a geometric model based upon each patient's anatomy and to initially measure the ultrasound attenuation coefficient at selected areas within the tissue region. The goal is to provide a tool to accurately estimate the ultrasound field so as to ensure therapeutic heating of the...

Our research proposal is on developing highly sensitive, rapid, cost-effective molecular assays for quantitating the transcripts of prognostic factors in breast cancer. In the first granting period, our goals were to establish the conditions for quantitating the transcripts of wild type-, and variant types of estrogen receptor (ER) using breast cancer cell lines in culture. We have designed PCR primers which can amplify various portions of ER mRNA. We tested the primers first on a plasmid cDNA...

The motion of an individual magnetic flux tube inside the penumbra of a sunspot is studied numerically. Here, we present preliminary results. The thin flux tube approximation together with a simplified radiative heat exchange with the surroundings is used to study the evolution of a flux tube embedded into a background given by a global magneto-static sunspot model. The investigation is undertaken in order to verify the conjecture that convection in sunspot penumbrae occurs by an interchange of...

*Description*: [Left] - A view of globular cluster M4 (fourth object in the Messier catalog of star clusters and nebulae). The nearest globular cluster to Earth (7,000 light-years away), and containing more than 100,000 stars, M4 was the target of a Hubble Space Telescope search for white dwarf stars. Ancient red giant stars are predominant in this view from a ground-based telescope. The field is 47 light-years across. The box (right of center) shows the small area that Hubble telescope probed....

We investigate -- as an alternative to usual Monte Carlo Renormalization Group methods -- the feasibility of extracting QCD beta-functions directly from a lattice analysis of correlations between the action and Wilson loops. We test this correlation technique numerically in four dimensional SU(2) gauge theory, on a 16^4 lattice at beta = 2.5 and find very promising results.

We apply a new approach to the reverse protein folding problem. Our method uses a minimization function in the design process which is different from the energy function used for folding. For a lattice model, we show that this new approach produces sequences that are likely to fold into desired structures. Our method is a significant improvement over previous attempts which used the energy function for designing sequences.

An ansatz is presented for a possible non-associative deformation of the standard Yang-Mills type gauge theories. An explicit algebraic structure for the deformed gauge symmetry is put forward and the resulting gauge theory developed. The non-associative deformation is constructed in such a way that an apparently associative Lie algebraic structure is retained modulo a closure problem for the generators. It is this failure to close which leads to new physics in the model as manifest in the...

This paper deals with the geometry of supermassive cosmic strings. We have used an approach that enforces the spacetime of cosmic strings to also satisfy the conservation laws of a cylindric gravitational topological defect, that is a spacetime kink. In the simplest case of kink number unity, the entire energy range of supermassive strings becomes then quantized so that only cylindrical defects with linear energy density $G\mu=1/4$ (critical string) and $G\mu=1/2$ (extreme string) are allowed...

We have simulated the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice using a local Monte Carlo algorithm. The behavior of the correlation length $\xi$, the susceptibility at the ordering wavevector $\chi(\bf Q)$, and the spin stiffness $\rho$ clearly reflects the existence of two temperature regimes -- a high temperature regime $T > T_{th}$, in which the disordering effect of vortices is dominant, and a low temperature regime $T < T_{th}$, where correlations are controlled...

We present results from a near-infrared $K$-band imaging survey of 59 elliptical galaxies in five nearby clusters. We measure photometric parameters for each galaxy using surface photometry and draw velocity dispersions from the literature. Three observables define a near-infrared Fundamental Plane (FP) of elliptical galaxies with $R_e \propto \sigma^{1.44\pm0.04} \Sigma_e^{-0.79\pm0.04}$. The scatter in the near-infrared relation is small at $16.5$\% in distance, which is equivalent to, or...

Teams build our automobiles (Sherman, 1994), manage our companies (Hackman, 1990), protect our country (Oser, McCalJum, Salas, & Morgan, 1989), and are increasingly employed in the U.S. workplace (Ilgen, Major, Hollenbeck, & Sego, 1995) to accomplish complex and critical tasks (Kozlowski, Gully, McHugh, Salas, & Cannon- Bowers, in press). Perhaps the single feature which most distinguishes teams from other organizational forms is that team members are interdependent; they must...

Some relationships between string theories and eleven-dimensional supergravity are discussed and reviewed. We see how some relationships can be derived from others. The cases of N=2 supersymmetry in nine dimensions and N=4 supersymmetry in four dimensions are discussed in some detail. The latter case leads to consideration of quotients of a K3 surface times a torus and to a possible peculiar relationship between eleven-dimensional supergravity and the heterotic strings in ten dimensions....

Within a four dimensional manifestly N = 1 supersymmetric action, we show that Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten (WZNW) terms can be embedded in an extraordinarily simple manner into a purely chiral superaction. In order to achieve this result it is necessary to assign spin-0 and spin-1/2 degrees of freedom both to chiral superfields and as well to non-minimal scalar multiplets. We propose a new formulation for the effective low-energy action of 4D, N = 1 supersymmetric QCD that is consistent with...

The entropy of a quantum-statistical system which is classically approximated by a general stationary eternal black hole is studied by means of a microcanonical functional integral. This approach opens the possibility of including explicitly the internal degrees of freedom of a physical black hole in path integral descriptions of its thermodynamical properties. If the functional integral is interpreted as the density of states of the system, the corresponding entropy equals ${cal S} = A_H/4 -...

The isobar model and the resonance model are applied for the first analysis of the subthreshold $K^+$-meson production in proton-carbon collisions, which was perfomed at GSI at an emission angle of 40 degrees and a bombarding energy of 1.2 GeV. In this study, we focus on the role of the secondary processes $\pi N \to K^+ Y$ in normal nuclear matter density. It turns out that the present approach can reproduce very well both the $\pi^+$- and $K^+$- meson spectra. It is also demonstrated that the...

For fields that vary slowly on the scale of the lightest mass the logarithm of the vacuum functional can be expanded as a sum of local functionals, however this does not satisfy the obvious form of the Schr\"odinger equation. For $\varphi^4$ theory we construct the appropriate equation that this expansion does satisfy. This reduces the eigenvalue problem for the Hamiltonian to a set of algebraic equations. We suggest two approaches to their solution. The first is equivalent to the usual...
