The effort to use spectral methods to simulate flows with shock waves is summarized in four published papers. In (2) the authors study uniform high order spectral methods to solve multi-dimensional Euler equations for gas dynamics. Uniform high order spectral approximations with spectral accuracy in smooth regions of solutions are constructed by introducing the idea of the Essentially Non-Oscillatory (ENO) polynomial interpolations into the spectral methods. Based on the new approximations,...

A unique training device is being developed at the Johnson Space Center Neurosciences Laboratory to help reduce or eliminate Space Motion Sickness (SMS) and spatial orientation disturbances that occur during spaceflight. The Device for Orientation and Motion Environments Preflight Adaptation Trainer (DOME PAT) uses virtual reality technology to simulate some sensory rearrangements experienced by astronauts in microgravity. By exposing a crew member to this novel environment preflight, it is...

This paper describes work in progress on a virtual environment designed for the visualization of pre-computed fluid flows. The overall problems involved in the visualization of fluid flow are summarized, including computational, data management, and interface issues. Requirements for a flow visualization are summarized. Many aspects of the implementation of the virtual windtunnel were uniquely determined by these requirements. The user interface is described in detail.

This paper describes ongoing development of training procedures to enhance self-attitude awareness in astronaut trainees. The procedures are based on observations regarding self-attitude (perceived self-orientation and self-motion) reported by astronauts. Self-attitude awareness training is implemented on a personal computer system and consists of lesson stacks programmed using Hypertalk with Macromind Director movie imports. Training evaluation will be accomplished by an active search task...

The accurate location of one's virtual egocenter in a geometric space is of critical importance for immersion technologies. This experiment was conducted to investigate the role of field of view (FOV) and observer station points in the perception of the location of one's egocenter (the personal viewpoint) in virtual space. Rivalrous cues to the accurate location of one's egocenter may be one factor involved in simulator sickness. Fourteen subjects viewed an animated 3D model, of the room in...

Living Color Frame System (LCFS) is a personal computer software tool for generating real-time graphics applications. It is highly applicable for a wide range of data visualization in virtual environment applications. Engineers often use computer graphics to enhance the interpretation of data under observation. These graphics become more complicated when 'run time' animations are required, such as found in many typical modern artificial intelligence and expert systems. Living Color Frame System...

Future solar arrays are being designed for much higher voltages in order to meet high power demands at low currents. Unfortunately, negatively biased high voltage solar cells have been observed to arc when exposed to the low earth orbit plasma environment. Analytical and numerical models of this arcing phenomenon on conventional solar cells have been developed which show excellent agreement with experimental data. With an understanding of a mechanism for arcing, it is possible to determine...

In this paper we discuss spatial considerations for instructional development in a virtual environment. For both the instructional developer and the student, the important spatial criteria are perspective, orientation, scale, level of visual detail, and granularity of simulation. Developing a representation that allows an instructional developer to specify spatial criteria and enables intelligent agents to reason about a given instructional problem is of paramount importance to the success of...

We demonstrate how the virtual photoproduction of vector mesons on nuclei scans the wave function of vector mesons from the large non-perturbative transverse size $\rho \sim R_{V}$ down to the small perturbative size $\rho \sim 1/\sqrt{Q^{2}}$. Thee mechanism of scanning is based on color transparency and QCD predicted spatial wave function of quark-antiquark fluctuations of virtual photons. A rich, energy- and $Q^{2}$-dependent, pattern of the nuclear shadowing and antishadowing is predicted,...

We study the cosmological solutions of the one loop corrected superstring effective action, in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background, and in the presence of the dilaton and modulus fields. A particularly interesting class of solutions is found which avoid the initial singularity and are consistent with the perturbative treatment of the effective action.

In these introductory notes I explain some basic ideas in string field theory. These include: the concept of a string field, the issue of background independence, the reason why minimal area metrics solve the problem of generating all Riemann surfaces with vertices and propagators, and how Batalin-Vilkovisky structures arise from the state spaces of conformal field theories including ghosts. More advanced topics and recent developments are summarized. (To appear in the proceedings of the 1992...

Source localization and tracking capability of the freely drifting Swallow float volumetric array is demonstrated with matched-field processing (MFP) technique using the 14-Hz cw data collected during the 1989 Swallow float experiment conducted in the northeast Pacific by Marine Physical Laboratory. Initial MFP of the experimental data revealed difficulties in estimating the source depth and range while the source azimuth estimate was quite successful. The main cause of the MFP performance...

Most treatments of barrier tunneling make use of simplifying assumptions, such as one-dimensional paths. As chemists, we are often interested in processes that occur in polyatomic molecules, thus the tunneling processes of interest are often multi-dimensional. Makri and Miller have presented a method for treating tunneling in multi-dimensional systems semiclassically. However, it is often necessary and appropriate to calculate tunneling corrections by assuming that it occurs along some special...

Early tests such as the explosion bulge test created a preference for overmatched welds (welds which are stronger than the base metal) which eventually became codified for many structural applications. While an overmatched system offers advantages such as the shedding of strain to the base plate, it requires the use of expensive fabrication procedures to avoid cracking. Undermatched welding of some high strength steels may offer reductions in welding costs with little sacrifice in weld...

We summarize our technical progress towards developing a thin-film edge emitter vacuum transistor capable of 1 GHz modulation. Extensive DC characterization of vacuum triode devices was carded out. Low frequency (1 0 KHz) modulation was demonstrated. Impedance mismatch between the fabricated devices and the test system prevented high frequency measurements. Redesign of the vacuum triodes is planned to achieve the 1 GHz program goal.... Vacuum microelectronics, Edge emitter, Thin film...

We study the dynamical evolution of idealised stellar systems by averaging results from many $N$-body simulations, each having modest numbers of stars. For isolated systems with stars of uniform mass, we discuss aspects of evolution up to the point of core collapse: relaxation and its $N$-dependence, the evolution of the density profile, the development of the velocity dispersion and anisotropy, and the rate of stellar escape.

A detailed reexamination is made of the exact operator formalism of two-dimensional Liouville quantum gravity in Minkowski spacetime with the cosmological term fully taken into account. Making use of the canonical mapping from the interacting Liouville field into a free field, we focus on the problem of how the Liouville exponential operator should be properly defined. In particular, the condition of mutual locality among the exponential operators is carefully analyzed, and a new solution,...

We present a definition of the non-abelian generalisations of affine Toda theory related from the outset to vertex operator constructions of the corresponding Kac-Moody algebra $\gh$. Reuslts concerning conjugacy classes of the Weyl group of the finite Lie algebra $\fing$ to embeddings of $A_1$ in $\fing$ are used both to present the theories, and to elucidate their soliton spectrum. We confirm the conjecture of \cite{OSU93} for the soliton specialisation of the Leznov-Saveliev solution. The...

According to recent reports there is an excess correlation and an apparent regularity in the galaxy one-dimensional polar distribution with a characteristic scale of 128 $h^{-1}$ Mpc. This aparent spatial periodicity can be naturally explained by a time oscillation of the gravitational constant $G$. On the other hand, periodic growth features of bivalve and coral fossiles appear to show a periodic component in the time dependence of the number of days per year. In this letter we show that a...
