Tennyson's 1842 poem "Locksley Hall", and its 1886 sequel, "Locksley Hall Sixty Years After". A tragic love story, or a lucky escape for both parties? An amazing evocation of historical change and destiny, or a whiny fanboy's complaint? Tennyson reports; you decide!

summer of 1875, and the wells fargo stagecoach is slowly rattling through a mountain pass in the sierra nevada gold country, bearing a cargo of passengers, u.s. mail, and gold. the driver pulls the horses to an abrupt halt at the sight of a man standing confidently on the side of the road. he wears a long dirty duster, a sack of flour over his head with a pair of holes cut for the eyes and brandishes a double-barrelled 12 gauge shotgun. a deep and hollow voice utters the command destined to...
show number two in the "streets of san francisco" series, still walking westwards, one street at a time. today's show moves from powell street to polk, with a couple of historical detours along the way.
san francisco is famously made up of an eccentric patchwork of neighborhoods. what is less known is that some of the most interesting and unusual have come and gone, leaving very little trace of a once vigorous existence. one of these was carville, an eccentric community made up of abandoned streetcars converted into clubs, restaurants and dwellings out on the pacific edge of the fin de siecle city. though virtually no trace is left, it does my heart good just to know that it was once there,...
there have been a great number of letters written from and about san francisco through the decades, some by visitors and some by citizens, some known around the world, others anonymous. it is fascinating to hear voices from the past brought temporarily back to life, to see the city and its environs through the pens of contemporary eyewitnesses... some who wrote with an eye towards posterity, but others who were just sending their thoughts across the country to loved ones left behind. there...

The quantum dynamics of atoms subjected to pairs of closely-spaced $\delta$-kicks from optical potentials are shown to be quite different from the well-known paradigm of quantum chaos, the singly-$\delta$-kicked system. We find the unitary matrix has a new oscillating band structure corresponding to a cellular structure of phase-space and observe a spectral signature of a localization-delocalization transition from one cell to several. We find that the eigenstates have localization lengths...

We introduce the labelling map and the quasi-free action of a locally compact abelian group on a graph $C^*$-algebra of a row-finite directed graph. Some necessary conditions for embedding the crossed product to an $AF$ algebra are discussed, and one sufficient condition is proved that if the row-finite directed graph is constructed by possibly attaching some 1-loops to a row-finite directed graph whose each weak connected component is a rooted (possibly infinite) directed tree, and the...

An unquenched calculation of the form factor for $B\to D^* l \nu$ is needed to improve the determination of $|V_{cb}|$. The MILC lattices, computed with a 2+1 improved staggered action for the light quarks, are well suited to this purpose. The relevant staggered chiral perturbation theory (SChPT) must be known in order to correctly account for the "taste" breaking discretization effects associated with the staggered quarks to NLO in $1/ m_{D^*}$. This SChPT calculation is presented.

It is shown that all simple ecological, i.e. population dynamical equations (unlimited exponential population growth (or decrease) dynamics, logistic or Verhulst equation, usual and generalized Lotka-Volterra equations) hold a symmetry, called $C_{E}PT$ symmetry. Namely, all simple ecological dynamical equations are invariant (symmetric) in respect to successive application of the time reversal transformation - $T$, space coordinates reversal or parity transformation - $P$, and predator-prey...

We present the calculation of $K\to\pi\pi$ matrix elements of electroweak penguin operators {\it i.e.} $Q_7$ and $Q_8$. In the numerical simulation, we use the gauge configurations generated by the combination of $N_f=2$ domain-wall fermions and DBW2 gauge action. From $K\to\pi$ and $K\to 0$ matrix elements on the lattice, we construct $K\to\pi\pi$ matrix elements at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion by using recent analytic results. Renormalization factor of these matrix elements...

I review the status of the issue of the k-string tension in Yang-Mills theory. After a summary of known facts I discuss a weakly coupled four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory that supports non-Abelian strings and can, in certain aspects, serve as a toy model for QCD strings. In the second part of the talk I present original results obtained in a two-dimensional toy model which provides some evidence for the sine formula.

The main purpose of this paper is to present a systemic study of some families of multiple $q$-Euler numbers and polynomials. In particular, by using the $q$-Volkenborn integration on $\Bbb Z_p$, we construct $p$-adic $q$-Euler numbers and polynomials of higher order. We also define new generating functions of multiple $q$-Euler numbers and polynomials. Furthermore, we construct Euler $q$-Zeta function. This paper is the version of the preprint of my paper to publish in the special issues as...

We have studied volumes of the 3-cycle and the compact 5-volumes for the $\beta$ transformed geometry and it comes out to be decreasing except one choice for which the torus do not stay inside the 3-cycle and ``5-cycle.'' There are 3 possible ways to construct these cycles. one is as mentioned above and the other two are, when the torus stay inside the cycle and when both the torus and the cycle shares a common direction. Also, we have argued that under $\beta$ deformation there arises a...

The mixing of $\eta_c$ and the lowest mass pseudoscalar glueball is estimated within the framework of the instanton liquid model. It is demonstrated that the mixing is large and may explain the difference between the observed mass of the glueball candidate X(1835) and the theoretical prediction of QCD sum rule analysis.

We probe the $\theta$-dependence of QCD at finite isospin chemical potential $\mu_I$ using the effective chiral Lagrangian approach. The phase diagram in the $\theta$, $\mu_I$ plane is constructed and described in detail in terms of chiral and pion condensates. The physics at $\theta ~ \pi$ is investigated in both the normal and superfluid phase. Finally, the behaviour of the gluon condensate at finite $\mu_I$ is computed.

Stirling approximation of the factorials and multinominal coefficients are generalized based on the one-parameter ($\kappa$) deformed functions introduced by Kaniadakis [Phys. Rev. E \textbf{66} (2002) 056125]. We have obtained the relation between the $\kappa$-generalized multinominal coefficients and the $\kappa$-entropy by introducing a new $\kappa$-product operation.

We show that the 'electron' and 'photon' can emerge from a supersymmetric Hubbard model which is a non-relativistic theory of the neutral particles. The Higgs boson and 'photon' may not appear in the same phase of the phase diagram. In a Mott insulator phase of the boson, the 'electron' and 'photon' are stablized by an induced Coulomb interaction between 'electrons'. This emergent mechanism may be 'realized' in an ultracold Bose-Fermi atom mixture except the long range Coulomb interaction is...

We show that high-temperature perturbation theory describes extremely well the area law of SU(N) spatial 't Hooft loops, or equivalently the tension of the interface between different Z_N vacua in the deconfined phase. For SU(2), the disagreement between Monte Carlo data and lattice perturbation theory for sigma(T)/T^2 is less than 2%, down to temperatures O(10) T_c. For SU(N), N>3, the ratios of interface tensions, (sigma_k/sigma_1)(T), agree with perturbation theory, which predicts tiny...
