In order to study analytically the nature of the size segregation in granular mixtures, we introduce a mean field theory in the framework of a statistical mechanics approach, based on Edwards' original ideas. For simplicity we apply the theory to a lattice model for hard sphere binary mixture under gravity, and we find a new purely thermodynamic mechanism which gives rise to the size segregation phenomenon. By varying the number of small grains and the mass ratio, we find a crossover from...

We obtain the phase diagram of the double-exchange model at low electronic densities in the presence of electron-electron interactions. The single particle problem and its extension to low electronic densities, when a Wigner crystal of magnetic polarons is generated due to unscreened Coulomb interactions, is studied. It is argued that the Wigner crystal is the natural alternative to phase separation when the Coulomb interaction is taken into account. We discuss the thermal and quantum stability...

A. Borel proved that, if a finite group $F$ acts effectively and continuously on a closed aspherical manifold $M$ with centerless fundamental group $\pi_1(M)$, then a natural homomorphism $\psi$ from $F$ to the outer automorphism group ${\rm Out} \pi_1(M)$ of $\pi_1(M)$, called the associated abstract kernel, is a monomorphism. In this paper, we investigate to what extent Borel's theorem holds for a compact Lie group $G$ acting effectively and smoothly on a particular orientable aspherical...

We use the distribution of gravitationally-lensed image separations observed in the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS) and the PMN-NVSS Extragalactic Lens Survey (PANELS), which are (nearly) complete for the image separation range $0''.3 \le \Delta \theta \le 6''$, to constrain a model velocity dispersion function (VF) of early-type galaxies. We show that a `weak' elliptical deformation of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate rotating at close to the quadrupole instability frequency leads to turbulence with a Kolmogorov energy spectrum. The turbulent state is produced by energy transfer to condensate fragments that are ejected by the quadrupole instability. This energy transfer is driven by breaking the two-fold rotational symmetry of the condensate. Subsequently, vortex-sound interactions damp the turbulent state leading to the...

The low-lying spectrum of the quark model is shown to be robust under the effects of `unquenching'. In contrast, the use of screened potentials is shown to be of limited use in models of hadrons. Applications to unquenching the lattice Wilson loop potential and to glueball mixing in the adiabatic hybrid spectrum are also presented.

In order to search for high-redshift galaxies around $z \sim 6$ in the Subaru Deep Field, we have investigated NB816-dropout galaxies where NB816 is the narrowband filter centered at 815nm with FWHM of 12.5 nm for the Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. Since the NB816 imaging is so deep we can detect 10 well-defined NB816-dropout galaxies that we identify to lie at $z$ = 5.8 -- 6.5. We discuss their observational properties.

We let the edge probability between any two nodes to be dependent on the spatial distance between them and demonstrate that this model captures many generic properties of social networks, including the ``small-world'' properties, skewed degree distribution, and most distinctively the existence of community structures.

The most promising way to compute the gravitational waves emitted by binary black holes (BBHs) in their last dozen orbits, where post-Newtonian techniques fail, is a quasistationary approximation introduced by Detweiler and being pursued by Price and others. In this approximation the outgoing gravitational waves at infinity and downgoing gravitational waves at the holes' horizons are replaced by standing waves so as to guarantee that the spacetime has a helical Killing vector field. Because the...

The emergence of quantum-gravity induced corrective terms for the probability of emission of a particle from a black hole in the Parikh-Wilczek tunneling framework is studied. It is shown, in particular, how corrections might arise from modifications of the surface gravity due to near horizon Planck-scale effects. Our derivation provides an example of the possible linking between Planck-scale departures from Lorentz invariance and the appearance of higher order quantum gravity corrections in...

We present the analysis of high resolution spectra of six red giant stars in the old open cluster Collinder 261. Reddening values for individual stars, derived from the relation between colours and temperatures (deduced from our fully spectroscopic analysis) are consistent with previous determinations based on photometry. For this cluster we derive an iron abundance of [Fe/H] = -0.03 +/- 0.03. We also obtain the abundances of light metals (O, Na and Al), alpha-elements (Mg, Si, Ca, Ti),...

Common reference frames used in Space Geodesy include: the center of mass of the whole Earth (CM), the center of mass of the Solid Earth without mass load (CE), and the center of figure of the outer surface of the Solid Earth (CF). There are two established definitions of the term geocenter: one, the vector offset of CF relative to CM and, two, the reverse, the vector offset of CM...

The effects of stochastic absorption and ejection of molecules by growing droplets have been considered. Both analytical and numerical approaches have been used. They demonstrate the satisfactory coincidence. It is proved that in general case corresponding to the asymptotic at big numbers of molecules in the critical embryo the effects of stochastic growth are small in comparison with the effects of stochastic appearance of droplets.

The Local Search problem, which finds a local minimum of a black-box function on a given graph, is of both practical and theoretical importance to many areas in computer science and natural sciences. In this paper, we show that for the Boolean hypercube $\B^n$, the randomized query complexity of Local Search is $\Theta(2^{n/2}n^{1/2})$ and the quantum query complexity is $\Theta(2^{n/3}n^{1/6})$. We also show that for the constant dimensional grid $[N^{1/d}]^d$, the randomized query complexity...

A formula for the commutator of tensor product matrices is used to shows that, for qubits, compatibility of quantum multiparty observables almost never implies local compatibility at each site and to predict when this happens/does not happen in a concise manner. In particular, it is shown that two ``fully nontrivial'' $n$-qubit observables are compatible locally and globally if and only if they are equal up to sign. In addition, the formula gives insight into the construction of new paradoxes...

We compare the higher twist (HT) contribution to the unpolarized structure function $F_3$ with that one to the nonsinglet combination g_1^p - g_1^n of the polarized proton and neutron structure functions using the assumption that the HT contributions to the Gross-Llewellyn Smith and the Bjorken sum rules are similar. We have found, that the relation 1/3x h^{xF_3}(x) ~ 6/g_A h^{g_1^p - g_1^n}(x) is valid for x > 0.1 and for x > 0.2 in the case of LO and NLO QCD approximations, respectively.

We show that groups appear universally in his description of children's intelligence, and that the notion of groupoid, which was little considered in psychology, may be fundamental. The objective of this project was to examine existing literature and national data to identify key factors in achieving quality outcomes from shorter duration apprenticeships and traineeships. It was found that apprentices and trainees undertaking programs of two years or less have a higher rate of non-completion than those doing longer training and this non-completion is the key issue related to the quality of outcomes. The study identifies four key factors affecting completion rates. Of...

We study the effect of dense quarks in a SU(N) matrix model of deconfinement. For three or more colors, the quark contribution to the loop potential is complex. After adding the charge conjugate loop, the measure of the matrix integral is real, but not positive definite. In a matrix model, quarks act like a background Z(N) field; at nonzero density, the background field also has an imaginary part, proportional to the imaginary part of the loop. Consequently, while the expectation values of the...
