The official comic adaptation of Bandai's Cartoon Network hit, a stylish "manga meets film noir" story which goes BEYOND the plot of the TV series! Paradigm City is the city of amnesia--40 years ago, SOMETHING happened that wiped out the memories of the residents, forcing them to recreate their culture from scattered fragments. In this world only 40 years old, Roger Smith is a negotiator--a go-between for police, citizens and criminals in high-risk diplomatic situations. But something...

New methods for efficient and unambiguous interconnection between electronic counters and target units based on nuclear photographic emulsion films have been developed. The application to the OPERA experiment, that aims at detecting oscillations between mu neutrino and tau neutrino in the CNGS neutrino beam, is reported in this paper. In order to reduce background due to latent tracks collected before installation in the detector, on-site large-scale treatments of the emulsions...

Photographic emulsion is a particle tracking device which features the best spatial resolution among particle detectors. For certain applications, for example muon radiography, large-scale detectors are required. Therefore, a huge surface has to be analyzed by means of automated optical microscopes. An improvement of the readout speed is then a crucial point to make these applications possible and the availability of a new type of photographic emulsions featuring crystals of larger size is a...

Although there is cumulative evidence that glass shape (i.e., visual information) influences flavors of beverages (e.g., Mirabito et al., 2017), there is no empirical research regarding whether glass edge (i.e., haptic information) affects them. We believe that the influence of haptic perception of glass edge is predominant in tasting beverages since we are mandatorily exposed to it during drinking. Thus, we will measure how participants perceive flavors of green tea by manipulating the...

When two different visual objects are presented sequentially at the same location, they tend to be misperceived as “same objects” (spatial congruency bias: e.g., Golomb et al., 2014). Although this bias has been typically observed with simple stimuli (e.g., geometrical shape), recent research suggests that the bias occurs with more complex stimuli (i.e., face stimuli, Starks et al., 2020). It is important to investigate the face-based spatial congruency bias with more controlled stimuli in...

This article is from Contemporary Clinical Dentistry , volume 5 . Abstract It is the responsibility of the dentist to fabricate a denture that is fully functional and perfectly esthetic. One prime oral function that has always been overlooked in this regard is speech. It has been thought that speech will follow mere replacement of teeth and that it is the patient's duty to fine tune this function with practice. Phonetics, esthetics, function and comfort form the foundation of a successful...

Ishii et al. (2011) claimed that the Japanese individuals are highly sensitive to social signs of disapproval (such as the disappearance of happiness) compared to the Americans, because in their cultural contexts, where interdependence is prevalent, it is imperative that they adjust to their social environments. This claim was evidenced by the fact that the Japanese judged the offset of happiness earlier than the Americans, while observing individuals gradually changing their facial expressions...

When an attentional cue is presented just before a line is presented, the motion is perceived as if the line extends from the position of the cue (illusory line motion, ILM). Hikosaka, Miyauchi, & Shimojo (1992) manipulated the stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) between the cue and line presentation and showed that the perception of ILM peaked when the cue was presented about 200 ms before the line presentation. In our preliminary experiment, we have found that when the cue was presented just...

In Experiment 3, we will test the hypothesis that the backward illusory line motion effect shown in Experiments 1 and 2 is due to attentional shift. In this experiment, cues appear simultaneously on the left and right sides of the line segment, but one cue is task-related and the other cue is not task-related. We predict that the perception of the backward illusory line motion will be influenced only by the location of the task-related (i.e., attention-directed) cue. Note that in the...

We propose to build and operate a detector based on the emulsion film technology for the measurement of the gravitational acceleration on antimatter, to be performed by the AEgIS experiment (AD6) at CERN. The goal of AEgIS is to test the weak equivalence principle with a precision of 1% on the gravitational acceleration g by measuring the vertical position of the anni- hilation vertex of antihydrogen atoms after their free fall in a horizontal vacuum pipe. With the emulsion technology developed...

Emulsion detectors feature a very high position resolution and consequently represent an ideal device when particle detection is required at the micrometric scale. This is the case of quantum interferometry studies with antimatter, where micrometric fringes have to be measured. In this framework, we designed and realized a new emulsion based detector characterized by a gel enriched in terms of silver bromide crystal contents poured on a glass plate. We tested the sensitivity of such a detector...

This article is from Nature Communications , volume 4 . Abstract Enantiomeric excess of chiral compounds is a key parameter that determines their activity or therapeutic action. We previously developed an automatic track scanning system which enables the detection of large-angle nuclear fragments in the nuclear emulsion films of the OPERA experiment. As a next step, we have investigated this system's track recognition capability for large-angle minimum ionizing particles $(1.0 \leq |tan \theta| \leq 3.5)$. This paper shows that, for such tracks, the system has a detection efficiency of 95$\%$ or higher and reports the achieved angular accuracy of the automatically...

This article is from Radiation Oncology (London, England) , volume 6 . Abstract Background: To evaluate prognostic factors in salvage radiotherapy (RT) for patients with pre-RT prostate-specific antigen (PSA) < 1.0 ng/ml. Methods: Between January 2000 and December 2009, 102 patients underwent salvage RT for biochemical failure after radical prostatectomy (RP). Re-failure of PSA after salvage RT was defined as a serum PSA value of 0.2 ng/ml or more above the postradiotherapy nadir followed by...

This article is from Journal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance , volume 16 . Abstract Background: Diffusion tensor cardiac magnetic resonance (DT-CMR) enables probing of the microarchitecture of the myocardium, but the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and fractional anisotropy (FA) reported in healthy volunteers have been inconsistent. The aim of this study was to validate a stimulated-echo diffusion sequence using phantoms, and to assess the intercentre reproducibility of in-vivo...

The Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) neutrino experiment measures neutrino oscillations by using an almost pure muon neutrino beam produced at the J-PARC accelerator facility. The T2K muon monitor was installed to measure the direction and stability of the muon beam which is produced together with the muon neutrino beam. The systematic error in the muon beam direction measurement was estimated, using data and MC simulation, to be 0.28 mrad. During beam operation, the proton beam has been controlled using...
