Pinch-hitting here.
I've noticed that hovering over Epubs shows no file size, unlike the other formats (PDF, Text, et al),

Try d/l this version:

Going by its PDF size, it's about 32.9MB, which is smaller than the 54.3MB version you tried to access.

Note that it appears to be a two-vol set; this is the apparent companion volume: https://archive.org/details/womenofallnation00joyc/page/n7

This is probably the size problem you're experiencing: the original Googlebooks version you tried as an Epub is both volumes in one unwieldy file.

That's awesome- thanks so much for the explanation. I almost thought the file was some kind of weird malware- it is/was GIGANTIC. I mean, more than my computer's space available- and I have a lot of space. I didn't make a note of the file size at the time however, I just halted the download immediately.

The link you gave me is 70 mb- the orig. file was GBs- a LOT of GBs- not MBs, Gigs. So huge my computer's space allocation wouldn't provide for it.

and as you note, there's no file sizes listed in those original files- which is rude IMO.
