Tim van Berkestijn was born in 1977, the year that the Brother Johnson's version of "Strawberry Letter 23" went to number 1 and Chet Baker released "Autumn Leaves" and "Far Away" (with Astrud Gilberto). Tim's parents were hip to all of it, not forgetting the Carpenters. Little did they know that 27 years later, their son would come full circle and re-invent himself as Benny Sings to debut his own version of incandescent pop in major keys. Lush, swinging hip-hop-influenced neo-soul with a singer-songwriter edge and a six-piece band for live shows. As he told us at the 2004 Red Bull Music Academy, he first experimented with electronic breakbeats and his faithful guitar before learning that the key to a powerful piece is to make every note count.

The Red Bull Music Academy is a global music institution committed to fostering creativity in music. We celebrate music, its culture, and the transformative minds behind it. Begun in 1998, the Academy has taken the core principles that underlie its annual workshop for selected participants and applied this curatorial approach to events, lectures, and city-wide festivals throughout the year.
