Early Vermont Postcards Collection

Among the many historical items in Middlebury College's Vermont Collection are over 1,100 photographic postcards from depicting landscapes, structures, disasters, and daily life in early 20th Century Vermont. A pair of horses is coming out of one of the buildings and there are large piles of cut marble slabs in the foreground. "The quarries extend way out under the church and schoolhouse you see in the picture. Some are so far under ground that they have to pump air in to them all the time."

Title supplied by cataloger Train wreck in Bolton on March 11, 1924. The Boston and Maine Express derailed due to a broken rail at 4:40 am. The engineer was Harry Palmer and the locomotive was #232. There were 3 fatalities including a 3 month old infant and there were about 60 injuries. The river is the Winooski.
