virginia. no surprise youngkin hit the hot button issue of education once again. >> this place where the virginia promise comes alive. the children dream the biggest dreams and all they have to do is go get it. that's the virginia where parents are fundamentally involved in their children's education. >> last night as part of his closing argument democrat terry mccauliffe went negative and did not tell the truth. >> with all that going on, glenn youngkin is closing his event with donald trump here in virginia. >> early voting hit a record high in virginia. more than 1.1 million ballots cost and the most expensive governor's race in the commonwealth of virginia, more than $115 million spent. this hour glenn youngkin is greeting supporters in chantilly, virginia. >> sandra: he will join us in just a bit. mike kicking things off for us. >> bill: as a back drop, what do you watch at home tonight when the election returns come in starting at 7:00 eastern? this is loudon county, the most talked about

youngkin decided he was going to run a virginia campaign focusing on virginia issues and then mcauliffe made this crazy comment in the debate that he didn't want parents to be involved in schools. that began to eat him up and then the school system -- the loudoun county school system turned out that they had actually lied to the parents about a girl who was raped in the girls room by a guy in a dress and doctor was transferred to a different school without telling them about his problems and he attacked another girl in a different school. so people felt that the whole system was lying to them, and i think brilliantly, the youngkin team had an ad up less than 12 hours after mcauliffe made this mistake and they had been pounding away education in the last poll is the number one issue in virginia, more than the economy, and both of those, frankly, hurt mcauliffe. i think you're going to have -- as you put it pretty well, this is the first beyond biden election, the outcome occurs the way we think it will, for governor or lieutenant governor or attorney general end assembly, this is going t

let's look at virginia right now. this is also very interesting in terms of the national trends, in terms of the overall story. you can see glenn youngkin there. we had projected as the winner of that race by about 2 points. a lot of focus has been on the suburbs surrounding washington, d.c. and richmond, virginia. and, yes, glenn youngkin did well there. he held his own. take a look at loudoun county there. this is a county that joe biden won by more than 20 points. you can see terry mcauliffe's edge was just 11 points. so, yes, glenn youngkin was able to make inroads in the suburbs, but if you want to know where glenn youngkin made the biggest gains, and had the biggest edge, i want to compare this race to the race four years ago that was won by the democrat ralph northam. and i want to look at where terry mcauliffe under performed ralph northam, did significantly worse than the democrat four years ago. you can see the areas where terry mcauliffe did worse, primarily these red rural counties. not the suburbs here. y

virginia, listen to me carefully. if glenn youngkin is elected governor, abortions will no longer be available here in the commonwealth of virginia. for 50 years the supreme court has protected roe v. wade. now it is the trump supreme court, 6-3. they are going to eliminate it. you saw what happened in texas. you know they're going to do it in mississippi. glenn youngkin, we do not want your antiabortion rhetoric and laws here in virginia. >> to many democrats' disappointment, recent polling shows abortion is not high on the list of key issues for virginia, less than 10%. instead, education has jumped nine points in a month with republicans hammering on critical race theory. joining me to talk more about this is nbc news correspondent heidi przybyla. larry sabatow from the university of virginia center of politics. heidi, what have voters told you about what's become the key issue in this race, education? >> chris, if you're talking about youngkin voters, it's literally the first thing they bring up. traversing this m

so, how do virginia voters feel? the largest percentage of them, 27% say the debate over how to handle things like vaccines and masks, coronavirus in schools was the single most important factor in their vote for almost as many it is critical race theory, about 25%. and one last tid bit, while some people have known for weeks, maybe months who they would vote for. some decide right before election day about 7% of them are late deciders in any close election like this one how those voters break could be the entire ballgame. stay tune and remember these are early numbers. still gathering info. bret, we'll keep you updated. >> bret: okay. there is a lot of numbers to look into. tell us about the race. shannon thank you. we will check in later. glenn youngkin has come from behind, significantly behind to bring a big challenge to former governor terry mcauliffe. alexandra hough is with the youngkin campaign in chantilly, good evening, alexandra. >> good evening. not a whole lot of official activity going on behind me yet.

this is blackburg, virginia. that's where you find virginia tech. you look at these areas right now and try to figure out, you know, with the democratic vote how it's going? it's very early here. mcauliffe only a couple hundred votes and youngkin at 565. a ways to go, still. >> martha: bill, take a luge at richmond again? >> bill: richmond city not to be confused with richmond county, okay? richmond county is over in this area here. we are early in the night for that county. expect youngkin to do well. this is richmond city it has been a strong area for democrats for quite a long time now. but there is no data just yet in the county that ranks 9 out of 133 counties. >> bret: it's interesting to watch where you think the biggest determining factor is here, bill. where this entire race comes down to. is it how well mcauliffe does in northern virginia or is it how well youngkin does in the southern part of the state? >> bill: that's a great question here. i think based on our voter analysis. what i can say early on, bret, is that youngkin seemed to be

he lost 520,000 votes in virginia. you look at northern virginia and you see where youngkin is campaigning. he is campaigning in northern virginia. in loudoun county. he's getting the big crowds and the places where donald trump lost by more than half a million votes. >> harris: and that's why ask why. you can look at the past it only serves you to learn from it. you've to show up to today's world. be five and the education problem across party lines. it hits home with parents. their reaction to that education stuff and all of those issues peered the dod's actions and how the youngkin campaign reacted t. >> harris: i wondered about this. we were wondering about the ten points at biden's won. in loudoun county, he won by 15. it gets worse when you look at where the republican candidate was last night. >> bret: and he's been there a lot. he's been in northern virginia a lot. fairfax county's another one where a lot of people he's been campaigning there. and if it holds, northampton county and prince edward county, that h

i said this before and wrote it in my piece for fox, whether mcauliffe lost virginia or won virginia, if you win, by a very tight margin and either party knows this it is a red flag. there is an alarm that goes out and you've got to say what did we do wrong, what can we do better, how do we not repeat this and that is the same thing going on in new jersey. in new jersey we have middlesex, s6, bergen have votes coming in, they still have mail in votes that come in and all of that does typically lean democratic and i think we take murphy over that 2000 point spread into go higher but again, not as high as we would like to see like a 9% lead like he had going into this election. >> what a when it would be for the gop of jack ciattarelli can pull this one off not just because he is a dynamic personality but because it says a lot about what people in the garden state think about the job phil murphy is done and maybe more broadly the job president biden has done. do you think the executive in washington has been a drag on races like we've seen in new jersey and virginia my reading too much

virginia, central virginia, and alienate the suburbs. remember his last few ads as i recall, and this is just a shaky memory of a middle aged man. his last few ads were about ms-13 and potentially racially incendiary turning off people in the northern virginia suburbs. so the challenge for ed gil gill gillespie's successor is how do you get these people while not alienating these people. >> this is 2017. >> this is 2017. >> 61% of the vote to 38% for the republican, and you come back here and margins matter. every vote matters. margins matter in these counties. so glenn youngkin we talked earlier, he's not going to win all of the suburbs, but he's more competitive in the suburbs. >> he has been as a candidate more agile. he has been as a candidate more deft. he has been able to get these people while not alienating the sub suburbanites in northern virginia and then in the virginia beach area. in fact, it's early yet, but he is competing very, very well in this virginia beach sbuburbs. >> he did not want trump to come to virginia, they ha

in virginia. what's been happening basically is glenn youngkin the republican put up a very big lead here in virginia by rolling up massive margins in republican-friendly areas of the state. and what's been happening over the last hour or so is absentee votes in more democratic-friendly bigger, more democratic-friendly counties have been adding in and chipping into that. the problem for mcauliffe is he's running out of places to make up 84,000 votes. the story of the night here in virginia. we can show it to you. take a look. we'll start right outside washington, d.c. biggest county in virginia. fairfax county here. we knew the democrats were going to win this county. the question tonight was how big would terry mcauliffe win it by? was terry mcauliffe going to get a number like joe biden got here, which was basically 70%, or was glenn youngkin going to make inroads here? was glenn youngkin going to win back some of those suburban voters who left the republican party because of donald trump? glenn

the turnout has been huge in virginia. >> energized especially in the republican and south part of virginia, outperforming trump's numbers and a lot of those counties that were deep red. >> i am just looking at this, guys. i've been looking at the vote difference here. you saw it, right, you saw a shift. only started this hit we were well over 100,000 in favor of youngkin over mcauliffe. i just picked up again that means that votes are coming in so if you give me a minute here i'll just go back to the three main counties and we will see whether or not there's changes during the course of this particular report here. youngkin dropped a couple of points here. still outperforming what he expected to do in virginia beac city. this is 2017. just for comparison sake and that went to the democrats. biden, he took it from trump by about five points in 2021. that is where we are in virgini beach city. just back to chesterfield, whil at got you guys he has got a lead, real votes 10,481. still hanging onto that 50-50 percent margin there in chesterfield. really, if this holds up, it's going to be a si

they brought in obama, they brought in biden to virginia harris to virginia, they took the entire democratic lineup brought them all in, v they out-raised the democrats so many times, they had a guy who was a former governor of this state who was effectively the clinton poster boy, could do no wrong in washington, d.c. they did all of that, they used his name over and over and over again and you had the greatest turnout in the history of the republican party for any governor in the state history. it is so funny. they bring in the whole lineup they raise more money and the use trump and guess what happens? republicans turned out in record numbers to support youngkin and we just have an unbelievable night. not just with governor, not just with attorney general but also if you look at house in virginia, they picked up seven seats and now the g.o.p. controls the house. what a great night this was for the u.s. and what a great night it was for, frankly, trump. >> sean: but it's interesting because your dad did endorse youngkin. your dad's track record is probably second to nobody whenne it comes

he was born in virginia. worked in washington, but really came across as someone, you know, who simply is not beholden to either party. but the key voters here are those voters in the middle. virginia does not register voters by party affiliation. so that adds a bit of mystery going into this evening. no registered republicans or registered democrats. glenn youngkin is going after some of those voters in the middle who are simply fed up with the direction of their local governments, state governments and perhaps even their federal governments. so, of course, terry mcauliffe has been governor before. he has a record. he served for four years in 2014 to 2018. and it simply has been an uphill climb for democrats. democrats have shown a lack of enthusiasm throughout the final stages of this campaign, and we've seen the democratic divide in washington. there's been no action on infrastructure. no action on the broader build back better agenda yet. so this is all of these things are really leading into what could b

of virginia. obviously saw him underperforming and we someone or performed by 200,000 votes from 2017. voters are engaged much more than we've seen in the past, we saw a record engagement in 2020 as well. with 66% of the electorate participating up from 15% from just four years before. this is an electric that's highly engaged and democrats need to make the case to the american people come we've got a year left before the midterms, certainly wake-up call. >> really focus on education and all the parents that we've seen for all these months, school board meetings upset what their children are being taught what they say is "critical race theory" and other issues that they felt they should have a say and then he really took that and ran with it and that seemed to really push him over the edge and a really big way. what do you say about the democrats who are saying that it was made up that president obama, he said that this was a made up thing, all this critical race theory talk? >> obviously glenn yo

virginia >> let's go to virginia for second. we have a call to make for a second right now, while we have calls that glenn youngkin will be the governor, we now have a call for the lieutenant governor of virginia, the republican, sears will become the lieutenant governor of the commonwealth of virginia, just over that point for half a second. in virginia it's the same situation, we had very heavy day of voting, very heavy turnout across the, stay generally. the day of voting is what decided what happened in terms of how glenn youngkin and sears have won this thing. still very much a contest for control of the state legislature in virginia. right now it's looking like it's still about 50/50, democrats may hold on to control the legislature. >> it's very close on that front, we can actually show you, here you go, here is the lieutenant governor result for jinah, and i think it jumps right out of, you again, this is lieutenant governor results, this is the governor result they're tracking almost perfectly here. this is one of those

virginia, this is happening here. i mean, there's a lot of people engaged. >> we were laughing because on the way out from leesburg we drove d.c. fairfax county blue electorate there. overwhelming voted for biden there were parents, kids, it was like a party. it it was halloween or youngkin. there is enormous amount of energy. you feel it you get a sense have you lived around the area for a long time, bret. i went to school at uva law school. i lived on and off in virginia for almost 25 years. this is different youngkin has run a smart campaign i think. >> bret: that issue of education we were talking about tellerrier with mo and reince. it does cross party lines and hit suburbs and parents who are concerned no matter what party. >> laura: one group democrats couldn't afford to alienate suburban women. critical to election victory in 2020. they were a deficit for trump in 2020. the democrats managed nationally, i think, and in virginia, slowly but surely eroding their majority base among suburban women education, whet

now southeastern virginia, haven't checked in for a while. this is virginia beach. it is interesting to watch. let's come back to the governor's race here currently. youngkin is 58%, tucker, with half of the vote in. we had youngkin at a floor of 52% in order to do very well across the state. he's already up by six points on the floor with half of the vote and appear this is north folk, n vote. joe biden one this district was 71% to 72% of the vote with less than half 41% and terry mcauliffe underperforming, underperforming joe biden a percentage level. so we will keep an eye on this and youngkin's numbers below. what is happening in chesterfield, we just had a big dump in chesterfield of votes coming in 85%. youngkin is holding on 55%. why is that critical? we believe his floor would have been 51%. so you have got 50% of the vote outstanding and youngkin is hanging on a significant way in chesterfield. suburbs of richmond critical to win the state throughout the commonwealth of virginia. loudoun county, let's see, okay. we just had another caching of votes here. yo

we'll move to virginia. with donald trump on the sidelines, republicans can make inres inroads in the suburbs. how did glenn youngkin pull this off? after donald trump won by ten points, how did he do it? number one, he managed the trump base. republicans came out in droves. they can recover the republican world dramatically in these small counties. a thousand votes here, a thousand votes there, that adds up. look here in south virginia and the capital in richmond. if you want to turn a dynamic in a state, you have to flip. this is the governors' race. he won everything down here. glenn youngkin was able to turn blue counties red and winning. close races are won in the northern virginia suburbs. glenn youngkin did not win loudoun county. you see it here. 55% to 44% four years ago in the governors' race. 60% for ralph northam. 61% four years ago, terry mcauliffe at 58%. three points here, four points there. in a close race, margins make a difference. glenn youngkin is not donald trump. no, he did not solve th

in virginia. a year ago at this time, we were talking about how virginia had gone blue, had gone for joe biden by double digits, by ten points. now, the republican by two points over terry mcauliffe. how did youngkin do it? simplest answer is he made everything a little bit less blue. he made everything a little bit more red. we can show you the results here compared to 2020. the more red it is, the bigger the bubble it is, the more republican improvement it is. pretty much everywhere here on the map, you have republican improvement. a couple areas jump out. number one, the hampton roads area, you look in virginia beach. we talked yesterday, this was the closest thing i think there was to a bellwether in the state. the city of virginia beach, this is the biggest independent city in virginia demographically. this is one of those places that's a pretty good sort of combination of every group in the state there. pretty good representation of the state. it's a place that joe biden had won. youngkin's

if we go back to virginia. we get lots of e-mails and messages about our screen there that we went from 97 percent to 95 percent. i and the questions to the decision desk and basically the expected vote number as an estimate and the turnouts and some of these areas are greater than expected. we have up on the screen these different numbers and we are saying that they have these, yo just talked about 40 percent an some areas in big numbers that have not been counted and there is lots of questions about how these people are dealing with this and each individual county. >> is that for me? >> i will try to answer it the best way i can. for example, here in loudoun county the estimated number is 99 percent. if we are going through this throughout the night, sometimes it was at 80 percent, and that was just an estimate for what w believe based on the numbers fo the governor's race from four years ago. so that is factored into this equation. when you do get a big turnout, it is hard to know who is doing early vote by

. >> virginia not governed the way that other states that stayed open, virginia maybe not worst, but it was not doing well. and there were a lot of businesses that were struggling, you saw virginia's you know paying people not to work and being surprised why people don't work, if you pay them not to work, don't be alarmed if they don't fill jobs, and proposal that have been coming forward make it worse. they increase our electricity bills and gasoline costs, increase cost of food and everything else. other thing that glenn youngkin did that i think was important is, make sure that virginians knew how we were lagging. he would talk in this many speeches, how virginia was really falling behind. north carolina of growing 8 times as fast in jobs than virginia, tennessee, 6 times faster. states we compete with are tennessee, and carolinas, and florida and georgia, you need to reduce cost of living and make sure tax are competitively low, a big issue in virginia was right to work law, further state north on eastern seaboard with right to work law. i would say, i would gettings in virginia
