>> dickerson: welcome back to "face the nation." with control of congress up for grabs next tuesday we want to take a look at where things stand in some key senate races. here with us is cbs news election and survey director anthony salvanto he has new numbers on hand. remind us on what is at stake in the senate then tell us what yo? >> right. the republicans have two-seat madge north in the senate trying to hold on to they have what we call favorable map. which means that of the states where senate races are up this year, the democrats are defen defending more and many are defending in states that donald trump won last time around. so we call them red states. republican leaning, that makes it rather hard for them. we start with a couple of states that i think will tell the story at least early on on election night when we watch. the first is florida. and that race we have tied between rick scott and incumbent democrat bill nelson. scott seems to get a boost from his handling of the recent hurricane there that may be he helping him

: good evening, i'm john dickerson. jeff glor is on assignment on his way to the florida panhandle, because hurricane michael is heading there, too. it is expected to make landfall as a category three as soon as wednesday morning. the governor calls it a monstrous storm. he's ordered evacuations of the panhandle. and residents are boarding up and moving out. storm surge and hurricane watches are up along the gulf coast. helping us track the storm is lonnie quinn, chief weathercaster at our new york flagship station, wcbs. lonnie? >> reporter: good evening. let's give you the latest as far as the national hurricane center is concerned, the most recent numbers at 5:00 eastern standard time show a category one system, 80 mile per hour winds. it got a little stronger today, moving to the north at nine miles per hour, it is the direction it moving in what we've got to keep an eye on the intensification of the storm. is it a guarantee, no. we watch it closely alot of warm warm water in the gulf of mexico will strengthen. cook

john dickerson joins me now from washington. so john, what affect will this acrimonious battle have on the senate itself moving forward? >> well, we'll have to see. democrats certainly feel like the republicans gamed the system with the f.b.i. investigation, that it was not thorough, that it didn't really look into the questions that were at issue. they also have that building upon the animosity they have about merrick garland's nomination being blocked by mitch mcconnell. so, there is certainly a lot of anger and it is on an issue where people get quite exercised. and we'll have to see how that really plays out. we'll see, certainly in a month when there is an election. and whether democratic voters respond to this current moment. and that will gage, or that will give us some sense of whether then democratic leaders respond in a way that keeps this alive beyond the current moment. >> quijano: for the senators who crossed party lines, what drove them to do it? >> well, i think that they-- basically, local politics. and so for se
