This was one of the O.Henry stories in the 1952 film "O.Henry's Full House". It is about a pair of crooks trying to raise a grubstake for a big swindle. They kidnap the son of a rich man in a rural Alabama town and it proves to be their downfall. In the film version Sam was played by Fred Allen and Bill by Oscar Levant. This file was updated Mar 2011. The file that was replaced had an incomplete ending. The text for this story may be found at www.gutenberg.org

Joaquin Miller  (1837 - 1913) spent 5 years with the Indian tribes whose base was in the forests out from the base of Mt. Shasta in northern California. The Modocs, Pit River Indians, Klamats, and Shastas were driven to near extinction by the influx of whites in search of gold. The rivers were polluted by placer mining and the salmon came no more. The trout died. Game was much more easily hunted with rifles than with bows and arrows. While this story has the potential to be a real downer,...

This is the story of the man who falls asleep and awakens to a changed world 20 years later. The story of Rip Van Winkle is to be found in the Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon. Crayon attributes it to Diedrich Knickerbocker. Both Geoffrey Crayon and Diedrich Knickerbocker were the creatures of the actual author, Washington Irving. To this day, New Yorkers who claim the Dutch settlers of New Amsterdam as their ancestors are known as Knickerbockers.

This is the first of the P.G. Wodehouse Jeeves and Wooster stories. I've read it in what I'll call Brit Lite. Meaning that while there is an English flavor to the speech, I've not attempted to maintain English accents. There is a fine line between being entertaining and tedious and I've tried to stay on the entertaining side. Bertie's friend Corky fancies himself a portrait painter but until a commission materializes he is totally dependent on his rich uncle for support. Now Corky wants to...

This was one of the stories used in the film O. Henry's Full House (1952). In the original, two struggling young artists live in a tiny apartment in the Village that would probably go for $3700 a month these days. One is ill and has a fragile grasp on life for which her metaphor is the leaves of ivy on the wall as the winter wind takes them one by one. Hollywood turned the roommate into a little girl and the leaves of ivy became leaves on a tree and on and on. The author's real name was Sidney...

Indian Old-Man Stories collected by Frank Bird Linderman A perfect deity (Manitou) is always a problem because the world isn't perfect. The Indians solved that problem by attributing the creation of the world and all its creatures to Old-Man. Old-Man (also called Napa) was full of mischief, he told lies, he got into trouble, and finally became such a problem that Manitou built a lodge for him and told him to stay in it. In these stories, War Eagle, the medicine man, tells his grandchildren why...

My great aunt Carrie lived with us when I was 4. She was a spinster and a retired school teacher. She knew her literature. She assumed the duty of reading bedtime stories to me. I soon got hooked on the bittersweet children's stories of Oscar Wilde and wanted them again and again. Even at age 4 most kids have figured out that happily ever after is hokum. Don't be surprised if your youngsters like this story too.

Lois Rather was my cousin and a life long writer who greatly enjoyed doing research. She and her husband Cliff started the Rather Press in 1969. All the type was set by hand. They were well known and admired by those with similar enterprises. Some were dismayed that their earliest projects employed staples. They were taught how to stitch a binding and did so. These are the gritty originals of a few of the stories collected by the Brothers Grimm. They lack the "improvements" made by later redactors. Rapunzel becomes pregnant by the prince. The wicked queen in Snow White dies wearing red hot steel slippers. There is no fairy godmother or pumpkin coach in Cinderella. The step sisters use self mutilation to fit into the gold slipper (not glass). At the end of the story they are blinded. I believe the translation credit for these stories...

These stories were written in dialect prior to the Civil War. In them old Uncle Remus tells the stories of B'rer Rabbit to a young boy. The Tar Baby is a classic that was treated by Disney in "Song of the South". They are good to listen to on a day when you are tired of being politically correct.

This is a fantasy best not read before bedtime. The story is about a man who reasoned that matter's form and shape comes from the minds of men and that other beings in a higher dimension might wrest that control away. Twenty years after a book was published containing his idea it seems to be coming to pass. He watches his world disappear piece by piece. This story by Clifford D. Simak and Carl Jacobi was first published in Comet Magazine in July 1941. The text is available at Gutenberg.org
