The American Numismatic Society is an organization dedicated to the study of coins, currency, medals, tokens, and related objects from all cultures, past and present. The Society's headquarters in New York City has the foremost research collection and library specialized in numismatics in the United States. These resources are used to support research and education in numismatics, for the benefit of academic specialists, serious collectors, professional numismatists, and the interested public.
A collection created by Internet Archive to separate bound resources from archival folders being digitized at the American Numismatic Society Library.
Eric P. Newman, numismatic scholar, was born in St. Louis in 1911. The Newman archives include papers from the estate of Burdette G. Johnson, a St. Louis dealer active in the first half of the 20th century. Newman further maintained personal correspondence files with hundreds of individuals beginning in the 1930s and extending into the 2010s. Newman also created research files on a variety of topics with particular focus on the pre-Federal era numismatics.

You may ask, “why were there special kinds of money used in prisons, jail and reformatories?” There are good reasons not to allow legal tender coins and bills in the hands of prisoners. The ready availability of such currency could encourage bribery, extortion, gambling and facilitate acquisition of contraband and escapes. Still, there needs to be some type of money so that inmates can purchase discretionary items, such as snacks, tobacco, toiletries and reading and writing supplies. This...

This Handbook is just what it sets out to be, and what is needed in the field of Jewish Coinage. Mel Wacks has contributed mightily to this field. And this Handbook - replacing his first version with an entirely new revision - is among his most important gifts. Somehow, Mel has managed to provide a work that is succinct without being superficial; that summarizes all the important material rather than limiting coverage through exclusion; and that simplifies complicated issues without...
