You play single player or against the computer flying a Sopwith biplane and trying to shoot down the enemy planes and destroy all the enemy buildings.
"Sopwith (The Author's Edition)" is the only "officially" released version of the series and adds new features like novice mode, damaged but flyable planes, screen damage and an anachronistic easter egg/cheat to boot.

Flip upside down/rightside up
There is an extra control, ".", which flips you plane, so you don't have to fly upside down to fly left.
My first time taking off, I flipped and then took off upside down. My second time I took off without moving forward (this doesn't work upside down).

Playing Bad Games Was What You Did
I remember playing this a lot. It's terrible, but addictive. And now I can relive those memories!
It seems like the "AI" is pretty ramped up on this version, so dogfighting is pretty one-sided. Bombs are difficult to aim. You have to fly upsidedown to go left.
The controls I mapped out were as follows:
X - starts your engine
< - pulls up
? - pushes down
space - shoots gun
B - bombs away
