Linux Distributions

The Linux Distribution Archive is a growing collection of media for the installation of Linux on various systems from the past 20 years. Since its formation in the early 1990s, the open source nature of Linux has ensured great variation in the release of distributions, including variations on floppy disk, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and online-only.

his is slacko64 compatible with slackware64-current binaries much like slacko64- released in the slacko thread. However, there is a big difference. Xorg is not in charge, it uses Wayland much like Cagepup Uses 5.14 Linux kernel What works: (as alpha 4th October 2021) pkg printing scanning dual screen boot to desktop most apps What doesn't: abiword is still crap xrandr (replaced by wlr-randr) and many xorg utilities numlockx - well not properly. Might work but keyboard LED doesn't probably a...

this is imppup / indripup built using ubuntus impish indri packages. what's new? vidcutter: a video clipper/editor. this isn't kdenlive but is quick and actually really useful for clipping sections out of video. you can also edit with it but clips need to be the same dimensions as it does no conversion. so random clips off youtube is a NO, but editing lots of different clips from your phone or camera (provided you record with same settings) YES. minder: a mind mapping application. quite simple...

Xenialpup64 built with woofCE testing  4.6.3 kernel  qt5  vlc  ffmpeg  palemoon  deadbeef  hexchat  samba  and all the usual puppy stuff.  this is the first stable-ish 64bit build. it's pretty huge though at nearly 300mb! i hope to trim some of that but it'll still be quite big i reckon. quite a few of the ubuntu libs have grown a lot...for instance the libperl package in tahr was 2-3mb and in xenial it's 20mb!  more details...

New from 666philb Fossapup64 built with focal-fossa components This differs a bit from my usual builds by being more modular. sort of a three pups in one.  Rather than just the main puppy.sfs and zdrv.sfs (kernel) i've utilised puppys ydrv, fdrv & adrv utility.  So say for instance you just want a bare bones system, you can remove the adrv & ydrv and get a small 180mb puppy.  it can go even smaller if you use tahrpups firmware in the fdrv to something nearing 150mb.  You could even...

A new puplet from 666philb built with woof CE and using ubuntu vivid vervet packages. Currently and early build, at the moment it shares the same packages as tahrpup except for a few additions, but i may go BIG with this one and include gimp, libreoffice, thunderbird... we'll see. One issue i've discovered is that apps in the tray segfault if you restart the window manager. This could be JWM, the kernel or just problems with the early ubuntu packages. More details here:...

EasyOS was born in January 2017, and since then there have been bits and pieces written here and there about how and why it is different from other Linux distributions.  This includes some rather technical descriptions. What is needed is a simple plain-English list, so that anyone can get a quick idea of what EasyOS is all about.  So, here goes. Do note, though, that Easy is an experimental distribution, and the features may change, and some features are a work-in-progress. These items are...

The latest incarnation of Barry Kauler's Quirky based on Debian Trusty Tahr Quirky Tahr builds on the same ideas, except is constructed with binary DEB packages from the Ubuntu Trusty Tahr repository. This offers the enormous advantage of compatibility with the large Ubuntu repository, and the Quirky Package Manager can download any package from it. Yet, this is a quirky Linux, quite unique. Instead of Trusty Tahr, you have Quirky Tahr, and the difference has to be experienced! Quirky Tahr is...

A new Quirky build from Barry Kauler. From Barry: Wary64 has the same code-base as April64. The only difference is smaller size, which is mostly achieved by providing a small subset of the Xorg drivers -- in particular, there is no llvm, mesa, opengl. I also left out Qt4, which is required for the VLC media player. However, I discovered that the Xine media player, which only requires Xlib (not GTK or Qt libs), plays all of my test videos. Xine is small, and works well with external ffmpeg libs....

A new release from Puppy Linux creator Barry Kauler. In a nutshell, this is a momentous occasion, as I have for the first time created a "one-stop shop", compiling absolutely everything from source, required to build a Puppy or Puppy-derivative. At first, I compiled for a i686 target, that worked. Then the real test came when I compiled for a "amd64" target, also known as x86_64, for 64-bit Intel CPUs. Compiling was successful and I built a Quirky, codenamed...

the newest release from Barry Kauler the creator of Puppy Linux, Quirky Xerus based on Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus Quirky Linux 8.0 is released. This is codenamed "Xerus", as it has binary compatibility with Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit package repositories. This means that Quirky is able to install DEB packages from these repositories.  Other than that, Quirky is in no way similar to Ubuntu!  8.0 has Linux kernel 4.4.7, SeaMonkey 2.40, and a host of applications to fill every need. As per...

The newest offering from Barry Kauler's Quirky test bed built using Ubuntu Wily Werewolf (15.10) as it's base. "The "April" series of Quirky is compiled totally from source packages, using T2 (as described in above link). Quirky "Werewolf" differs in that it is built with Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf binary DEBs. It must be emphasised that the mere fact of using Ubuntu DEBs does not make Quirky a clone of Ubuntu. Nothing could be further from the truth.  Quirky Werewolf...

A very unique Puppy Linux build from Barry Kauler, the entire operating system and applications are built within the kernel image "Quirky Puppy 5.4.91 Quirky Puppy is my build of Puppy for trying out ideas, sometimes quirky ideas, hence the name. Quirky is a "quirky" Linux distribution created by Barry Kauler, that forked from Puppy Linux a few years ago. The original intention was to experiment with new ideas, and Quirky has evolved into an exciting and unique distribution. SlaQ 8.1.6 The predecessor Woof2 had been used to build Puppy from Slackware packages, the most famous of these being Slacko, created by Mick Amadio. Slacko continues to this day as one of the official Puppy builds, created via woof-CE. woofQ required a...

New from Barry Kauler, described as 'scratching an itch', a new pup but built with an old woofq from 2012, likely to be incomplete: This pup is a weird beastie. Looks like EasyOS, but also like a somewhat broken vintage-2012 Puppy Linux. Broken, because I got to the desktop then stopped working on it. For example, created a save-file at shutdown, but it wasn't found at next bootup -- a mere detail, sure that can be fixed.  However, finding all the little issues and fixing them will take many...

Wary is Barry Kauler's LTS (long-term-supported) sibling of Racy (archive.org/details/Puppy_Linux_Racy) which uses older kernels and has greater driver support especially for dial-up modems Wary and Racy share common packages, they can be found with the Racy files Precise has found to be a suitable replacement and can be found here: archive.org/details/Puppy_Linux_Precise
