There are rock bands, and then there is... Jaunt!
A description in text of any band is difficult. Jaunt make it that much harder - from reflective moods brimmed with emotion, through to complete sonic mayhem, the Wellington four-piece have created something familiar yet unique. Influences are still recognisable - from sources as eclectic as Radiohead, REM, and the Ramones - but on the whole, Jaunt stays off comparisons by maintaining a frank, youthful energy and honesty.
With the four of them from firmly different camps, it is not hard to see how the band manages to keep things fresh:
MIKE (drums) is a jazz fiend with a penchant for foreign heavy metal. MORGAN (bassist) has an extensive collection of CD's from 60s and 70s rock groups and knows what happened to every member of Jethro Tull. DARREN (guitar, keyboards) runs a DJ shop and goes to as many raves as he can stay awake for. KANE (guitar, vocals) relaxes at home listening to whatever anyone puts in front of him.
An impressively polished stage show (and a departure from the standard rock guitars-bass-drums format) make the band's shows stand out from the pack. But the thing that sets the band apart from many others is the sound - Mike's dense drumming meshes with Morgan's intricate basslines to form a complex, solid wall-of-sound. Kane and Darren then embellish this with an ambience of guitar and keyboard that perfectly matches Kane's emotional vocal style. But then the roles will reverse - the rhythm will simplify, and the guitars and vocals will come right out and smash you in the face. The contrasts will take you by surprise, and cement Jaunt firmly into your memory!
The band have so far attracted a huge buzz in the local scene, drawing an ever-increasing group of dedicated fans to each gig. Jaunt have become a favourite at certain inner-city Wellington venues, and have played extensively around the city and outlying areas. With a solid fan base, and increasing support from other local bands, venues and agencies, the band will soon be releasing an independent EP which is currently being recorded. You can get one if you ask nicely.
The future looks bright for this group of likely lads - their plans are to keep writing brilliant songs, and work their way to the top of the ladder. All they really need is for one of them to sprout breasts and bright red hair.
