Scarlet>Fire features Phil in fine form.
Subject: The Professionals
Anyway, I'd say this is a smooth, professional '77 Dead show (apart from the long gaps of dead space between each song), worth a listen, but not one of their nights of Inspiration. The sound is OK, a bit compressed and muffled, about what you'd expect of a tape off the radio from 1977.
Subject: The crowd noise is...
Also, and this is nitting one little pick, the announcer should know better...he was introducing Grateful Dead, not The Grateful Dead. No such band with the latter name ever existed.
3 stars for the annoying crowd noise. I cannot give the show itself a fair rating because of it...the fades of crowd noise into and out of the songs eliminate any hope of hearing the nuances at those parts of the recording.
Some of us actually like to hear what they are ding between songs.

Subject: GREAT '77-vintage show....!!
Heed the reviews; if you don't have this show, you're missing out on a SUPER evening with the band.....
Of particular note is the FABULOUS "Mississippi Half-Step"; it's a true contender for the "Best-Ever" trophy....!! ESSENTIAL Grateful Dead!!!
Subject: The "I" is not pleased, the audience IS!!!!
Subject: Not Impressed
I'm giving this a 3/5 even though there are one or two songs that are great. But does that make a show good? I don't think so.
Subject: i don't know, it
a very tight first set, highlighted by a bevy of heartfelt jerry tunes and lots of well-played and -sung bobby tunes. looks like MNS has found its spot! a great first set closer.
estimated still seeking its proper home - a dripping version as set opener? scarlet>fire is now so, so, so rock solid - best one of the tour so far? definite maybe. good love and ramble on rose seem out of place mid-set, but $@%& it cuz they's played oh-so-well. springfield samson is pushed aside by tonight's. strong terrapin and then, at last THE DEW, a song that can do no wrong. no, sir. always satisfies, but when it's this good, get back!
night five of tour has us solidly back on track as we head to nyc for five, count 'em five, nights at the palladium! cannot wait to biodtl!
Subject: My first show. My favorite Scarlet > Fire
I listened to those for about 25 years before getting the show on cdr. Now I am just 2 mouse clicks away from streaming the show. Long live the internet archive!
The sound quality is just wonderful.
The Scarlet > Fire is my favorite of all time.
Subject: Not too shabby
Not too sure about that Sugaree though, contrary to some other reviewers. Jerry's playing was nice, but the drummers seemed to really lose it a few times there. I actually thought the whole thing was just going to collapse under it's own weight at one point -- right before Jerry starts with the double-time leads that usually blast it into the stratosphere. Actually, I was thinking there might not be enough steam going for him to really pull it off, but he managed somehow, and it did start to lift off some after that. Definitely not the best performance of that song to my ears, though.
A solid effort though, and well worth the listen.

fire on the mountain. estimated. morning dew are all through the roof.
Subject: Top show for '77
This show comes out of the starting gate strong, rockin', and tight, both in playing and vocals. The jams are interesting. Jerry smokes in Sugaree. The set list isn't bad. And it ends with a nice Dew that is on par with the '74 Dews.
Subject: Mighty Dew
Subject: What a classic Dead show.
Subject: Love this show...
Subject: A lot to appreciate
There are also some extremely good versions of other Dead classics.
On the downside, they kept jacking up the audience mikes in between songs with the intent (I assume) of giving a better feel of what it would be like to be in attendance. Unfortunately, they jacked up the audience mikes so much that it's aversive.
