Wonderful time...
This show is also erroneously listed as Shrine Auditorium when it actually happened at the adjacent but decidedly less elegant Exposition Hall. Kinda like the ballrooms in San Francisco that were popular at the time, the Shrine Expo had featured livestock exhibitions in the past hence the nickname "The Old Cow Barn," But the Dead always seemed at home there and knew their still wet behind the ears fan base would be there, eager to dance and cheer them on. Yes, it was very rare to hear Mountains of the Moon back then and almost unheard of for Jerry to play an acoustic guitar onstage. Very nice take on that song. I especially enjoyed Phil's playing on Lovelight. Of course there is music missing here but it's very cool to be able to hear something from that wonderful era. Country Joe and the Fish opened and were clearly gone to seed by then. They were using Spirit's bassist Mark Andes and he gave it his best but really didn't know the material. Spirit, one of the great unsung bands of the sixties also performed that night and acquitted themselves very well. I got a Line on You was THE song of the summer of '68 and it was great to hear it that night.

mountains and tuning
when i was about 16 in high school i recorded on cassette this show off the DEAD HOUR which came on the npr station.I must have entranced myself before I went to sleep with this about a million times.
The atmosphere is great I think.I think of it as a good example of the extent of the Dead's folk style.

mts of the moon
this was the first show mts was played and the only in 68 its a shame that the song only lasted a little over 6 months and was only done about 13 times (its one of my favorites can u tell haha) but yea beautiful song
the show has all right sound i guess besides the the hiss and the mts, you have to turn that way up the playing on the ll was pretty typical and the lovelight was nothing compared to the monsters of next year but it still suffices

How often
How often did the Grateful Dead do Mountains of the Moon in 1968.
It's worth it for that alone.
A download that is.
Folks I can't tell you how good I feel right now.
And this music, like all dead music when you get down to it ,makes IT that much better.
