Disk Drives: Collections of Files from the Era of the Drive

With the introduction of offline storage (in the form of tape and punch cards, later floppy disks, hard drives and cards), computer users began to create and acquire all manner of data to use with their machines. Programs, textfiles, and later images, sound and moving image data would be collected in the course of computer ownership and maintenance. Over time, this collection would sometimes resemble a pile, or a library, or an archive. The unifying theme would only be that they were all on the ...

So, I guess hoarding every single textfile on winmx was my deal or something at the time. There was this thing where to allow propogation of new server files, all files (I believe) < 32K were allowed to skip the queue, so textfiles could be easily hoarded. There's probably a bunch of sketchy junk in here. I had a "download all the things" attitude at the time, so none of this should reflect me, but should hopefully be a pretty accurate representation of textfiles on WINMX in 2003....

This is a collection of Macintosh software disk images ranging from the mid-80's to the late '90's.  The formats include 400K MFS, 800 HFS, 1.44 HFS, original CD images & custom disk images that I have created.   No guarantees that 20+ year-old software will actually work, although all the of the disk images except for the 400K MFS disks have been successfully mounted using Mac OSX 10.6 and Mac OS 9.2.2.

A couple of years ago I bought about 3,000 floppy disks from a guy in Los Angeles who once ran a PC shareware company. Many of the disks contained shareware downloads from various BBSes in that area, mostly from the late 80s to about 1994. Knowing their historical value, I copied the files off several hundred of these floppies for the sake of history before succumbing to fatigue. As far as I know this is all shareware or freeware, roughly organized into whatever BBS they downloaded it from....

This is a collection of images Apple II floppy disks sent to Jason Scott in 2015. Using the ADT (Apple Disk Transfer) program, which utilizes a vintage Apple IIe and a floppy drive. Effort was taken to produce as accurate a read of the floppies as possible, resulting in .DSK files that contain the data from the floppies.  (These are sector-based readings, and contain the directory structure and file information. If a disk has unusual or secret items, they may not have been grabbed).  The...

The files in this archive are taken from the file section of The Cave BBS of Raleigh, NC, USA. From December 1992 to February 9th, 1998, I ran a one-node WWIV BBS in Raleigh, NC, USA called "The Cave BBS." At its height it had over 1000 users, although definitely not all were active at once. The BBS was members of FIITA net, SWIPEnet, and CaveNet WWIV message networks at one time or another. I started with the BBS software WWIV 4.21a and slowly upgraded to WWIV 4.24a over the years,...

In 1998, Jason Scott, a child of the quickly-fading Bulletin Board System (BBS) era in computer communication, checked the then-seemingly-infinite World Wide Web to see what it had to say and show about these single-line online services he had used since the early 1980s. Shocked to find that very little had made it online, he assembled his personal collection of textfiles, archives and memorabilia and began a site called TEXTFILES.COM, intending it to be a living museum of the early days of the...
