Disk Drives: Collections of Files from the Era of the Drive

With the introduction of offline storage (in the form of tape and punch cards, later floppy disks, hard drives and cards), computer users began to create and acquire all manner of data to use with their machines. Programs, textfiles, and later images, sound and moving image data would be collected in the course of computer ownership and maintenance. Over time, this collection would sometimes resemble a pile, or a library, or an archive. The unifying theme would only be that they were all on the ...

So, I guess hoarding every single textfile on winmx was my deal or something at the time. There was this thing where to allow propogation of new server files, all files (I believe) < 32K were allowed to skip the queue, so textfiles could be easily hoarded. There's probably a bunch of sketchy junk in here. I had a "download all the things" attitude at the time, so none of this should reflect me, but should hopefully be a pretty accurate representation of textfiles on WINMX in 2003....

A large collection of .EDD images created by Antoine Vignau from various Apple II sources. EDD (Essential Data Duplicator) is a disk image format to capture Apple II floppy disks at the raw level, supporting even non-standard copy-protected disks with odd configurations. It is associated with specialized hardware (EDD+ Card) and software (“I'm fEDD up”).
Capture of the file section of The Devil's Doorknob in 1996, put to CD-ROM in 2003.
A variety of .ZIP files from BBSes, including history around 1980 up through the late 1990s.

This item is a compilation of images acquired from a 12,000+ floppy collection of one of the members of the cracking group "Bamiga Sector 1". It was in an attic in Belgium for roughly 25 years and is in the process of being imaged by a small set of volunteers.  The collection is expected to grow over time and will be noted here when it is complete. The website for the project is  http://www.amigaclub.be/bs1/ For easy downloading, the collection will be a set of .zip files, which can...

The first version of PCBoard was released in 1983. Clark Development Company (CDC) pioneered the FILE ID.DIZ format as well as a powerful scripting language (PPL), which supported modifications and to a large degree replacement of most standard commands and processes. A compiled interpreter script written in PPL was called PPE (PCBoard Programming Executable). PPEs were generated by the PCBoard Programming Language Compiler (PPLC), which was an optional tool provided by Clark Development...

This is a collection of Macintosh software disk images ranging from the mid-80's to the late '90's.  The formats include 400K MFS, 800 HFS, 1.44 HFS, original CD images & custom disk images that I have created.   No guarantees that 20+ year-old software will actually work, although all the of the disk images except for the 400K MFS disks have been successfully mounted using Mac OSX 10.6 and Mac OS 9.2.2.

These are my hard drive backups from the Commodore Amiga 4000/040 that was used on the set of Titanic, Apollo 13, True Lies, and more. The machine was integral in the making of the movies. These hard disks contain original never-before-seen lost footage from the making of Titanic. (Update: Since releasing my video about this it was discovered that the second drive thought to have been for the PAR was actually not in PAR format, though its data remains unrecoverable.) Please note the PAR drive...

The files in this archive are taken from the file section of The Cave BBS of Raleigh, NC, USA. From December 1992 to February 9th, 1998, I ran a one-node WWIV BBS in Raleigh, NC, USA called "The Cave BBS." At its height it had over 1000 users, although definitely not all were active at once. The BBS was members of FIITA net, SWIPEnet, and CaveNet WWIV message networks at one time or another. I started with the BBS software WWIV 4.21a and slowly upgraded to WWIV 4.24a over the years,...

From the MAME Forums: "Years ago we had a forum member named oNyX who used to go around to arcade auctions and California Extreme type events and take pictures of cabs for MAME use. He also collected pictures and info from ebay auctions around the time (2000-2003ish). It became several gigabytes and was shared through a couple of FTPs for certain groups. Contributed by Charles Shrader, this is a collection of Amiga .ADF files, ready for use in an emulator or writing out to floppies to boot on original Amigas. The general collection was assembled around 2000 and transferred recently. The pile of floppies was from an unknown owner, and acquired through eBay, so no direct information is available. In total, there are roughly 1,000 .ADF images in this collection. They contain games, utilities, and documentation files.  To browse the directory of...
