Long before the Internet escaped from the lab, connected the planet and redefined what it meant to use a computer there was a brave and pioneering band of computer users who spent their time, money and sanity setting up their home computers and phone lines to welcome anyone who called. By using a modem, anyone else who knew the phone number of these computers could connect to them, leave messages, send and recieve files.... and millions did. They called these places "Bulletin Board...

Scans of message board and session dumps from the 8BBS bulletin board system. 8BBS ran from 1980 to 1982 in the SF Bay area of California and was one of the earliest publicly accessible message boards. In this relatively short run it was host to many notorious characters of the early hacking and phone phreaking scenes. This is Part 1, Version 1 - another "part" will be released if more logs are found.  If Part 1 is re-processed (to improve readability or OCR) it will be released as...

A collection of FidoNet messages dating from 1993-1999, scraped by Josh Renaud in 2015-16 from message boards "frozen in amber" on two BBSes.  The largest set consists of more than 300,000 messages scraped in 2015 from FidoNet message boards on ExecPC BBS. The earliest messages in this set were posted in Nov. 1993 in a Ross Perot echo. ExecPC's connection to FidoNet seems to have gone down in June or July 1998. A handful messages were posted by local ExecPC users after that until...

Mystic BBS 1.12 Alpha 41 was released on 27 December 2018 . Mystic BBS was conceived around the year 1995 when the author became frustrated by the lack of customization available with Renegade BBS , and first released to the public in late 1997 during a period when many BBS packages were seeing a decline (or a full stop) in development. Mystic is developed from the ground up with all original source code and is intended to be the spiritual successor to both Telegard and Renegade (two of the...

This is a collection of various BBS (Bulletin Board Systems) articles posted in the time between 1985 to 1988. Downloaded by modems and couplers that could go as fast as 2400 bits/s (!) These texts were public to everyone back then like if you would post an article in an internet forum today. It was a form of digital newspaper for computer enthusiasts that were the first ones to create something that later became the internet. But most of them were forgotten because the BBS were shut down. ...

Hyperland  is a 50-minute long documentary film about  hypertext  and surrounding technologies. It was written by  Douglas Adams  and produced and directed by  Max Whitby  for  BBC Two  in 1990. It stars Douglas Adams as a computer user and  Tom Baker , with whom Adams had already worked on  Doctor Who , as a personification of a  software agent . In hindsight, what  Hyperland  describes and predicts is an approximation of today's  World Wide Web . The self-proclaimed...

Introduction WWIVsys is a shareware utility designed to aid sysops running WWIV 4.xx. Created in the fall of 1994, the idea was to make a utility for configuring WWIV that was easy to use and that combined all the major sysop functions into one program. The documentation was written with the experienced WWIV sysop in mind. It has been divided by each topic on the Main Menu and gives a general description of each function.  Some of the items in the various functions are self-explanatory and may...

"I got a batch of old cassette tapes containing recordings from a new defunct community radio station, CKIZ 90.5 FM, located in Pincher Creek, Alberta. While listening, digitizing, and cataloging the contents, I found this gem: an on-the-air ad for a local BBS. Hope you enjoy it, as I assume that radio ads for bulletin boards were pretty rare. (Fortunately the date of the recording was marked right on the tape: November 4, 1992!) The audio sounds overdriven, but that's (unfortunately) how...

OVERVIEW Have you ever wished you could find a communications program that wasn't a 150-300k program requiring a hard disk to run efficiently? One small enough to run in a DOS shell from a large application, without being totally stripped of essential features? Lync was written to fill this need. Occupying less than 55k of disk space and requiring less than 95k of free memory, Lync will operate on all but the most restricted of systems. And the menu driven interface means you don't have a long...

This is a set of buffer captures from the final days of the Gateway Keyboard BBS in the St. Louis area from very early 1986, just before it shut down forever. This was one of the first BBSs I ever called, and it was run on a Lobo system, running TBBS, or "The Bread Board System" software, on either LDOS or CP/M. This file was re-assembled from several different capture files on one old 1541 (C64) disk image, originally made from one of my old 1541 disks.

Notations have been lost to time; markings of various BBSes being added and deleted as they went down are by Space Rogue. These three example lists of BBSes in the 617 (Boston) and 207 (Lewiston) areas are typical of the time - a variety of sites for various purposes as well as reflecting some of both hacker and general BBSes.
