Welcome to our new and expanding TV News Kitchen! This is where we are starting to gather data and experiments based on the
We are working with researchers, developers, journalists, fact-checkers, and others to cook up ways to provide deeper indexing and enhanced metadata for the TV news collection. We provide APIs, data downloads, and are developing opportunities for others to join us in our test kitchen. Examples include
Face-o-Matic (facial recognition in partnership with Matroid),
Third Eye (OCR of chyrons on cable news networks), the
Television Explorer (enhanced caption search via data scientist Kalev Leetaru), and the
Political TV Ad Archive, which tracked ads in the 2016 elections using audio fingerprinting.
The end result may be a journalistic exploration of political talking points, an academic analysis of TV news coverage, a new tool built by developers that we can’t imagine yet, or a high school history project. We strive to provide the means to enhance knowledge of ourselves collectively through the lens of how TV news reports on us, while keeping ethical considerations paramount.
