You maneuver your armies to aggressively fight for new territory, but at the same time try to maintain sufficient forces to defend territories already conquered from hostile opponents. It's not easy to keep your armies balanced evenly enough to make advances on your enemies. You fight to be the last player remaining on the world. If you can do this, you are naturally the winner.
To begin the game, you and your enemies choose names and a screen patterned which will represent your territory. Each country you control or take over will be "colored" using the pattern you choose. The computer draws the game board in high resolution and randomly parcels out land to you and your enemies. You get to initially rearrange your armies however you want within your countries.
For movement and attack purposes, the countries are all specified by a letter and a number combination (for example, "E1" is a country in Europe). Because of screen space limitations, some countries have only a number listed. To determine the correct name (i.e.: letter), find another country on the same continent whose name includes the a letter. Use this letter followed by the number to identify the country you want to attack or re-stock with troops.
Risk even lets you and you infamous enemies to save a game by entering "SAVE." The saved game will have a game number assigned to it and will be placed in the RSKGAMES directory. To continue a saved game, either enter "REST" instead of an attack or restart RISK and select "R" to restart a game, at which point the program will request the number of the saved game. You can save up to 99 different games at one time. So if you run out of time today for taking over the world, pick up the next day right where you left off!

Your goals are unknown to you until you begin each mission. You have to attain your goal before running out of fuel and while trying to avoid being destroyed with missiles or rockets, or by colliding with an alien. If your attack helicopter is destroyed, then play begins again from the beginning of the mission utilizing a backup helicopter (which you earn every 3,000 points!). Needless to say, when you run out of backup helicopters, you are dead meat and the game is over!
Notes
Part of The MicroCom Collection, MicroCom Systems' best of public domain and user-supported software library.
Imaged from 5.25″ diskette using a Mitsumi D509V3 floppy drive and a FC5025 USB floppy controller.
The file log is a log of the imaging process.
The source diskette was part of a household collection and may contain e.g. high score files that were not present on the original pristine filesystem. Check timestamps: any file dated 1990-01-01 or later, that isn't mentioned in help.doc, is likely not original.
The file dosbox.conf in the zip file is not original. Its purpose is to slow down emulation.
