This is the full 12-10-2017 episode of the Labor Express Radio program.
On tonight's program I bring audio from the Binational Conference on Culture, Language, and Work in the Era of the North American Free Trade Agreement also referred to as the Bi-National Conference against NAFTA, though that was far from the only topic discussed at the conference. In particular we will hear from two icons of the U.S. labor movement. From the two most important farm worker organizations in the country. First we will hear from Baldemar Velasquez, President and Founder of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC), FLOC organizes farm workers in the eastern portion of the U.S. and has for decades been one of the most innovative and militant unions in country. Velasquez will talk about FLOC’s boycott of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco's Vuse electronic cigarette.
And the discussion of the power of consumer boycotts will continue in the second half of tonight’s program with Al Rojas’s speech at the Bi-National conference. Rojas was one of the founders of the United Farm Workers union (UFW) which was famously lead by Cesar Chavez for most of it history and organizes farm workers on the West Coast. Al was also one of the organizers of the famous grape boycott in the late 60’s early 70’s which won the UFW their first contracts. Rojas is now helping support the boycott of Driscoll's Berries because of the violent abuses of worker rights at the farms that supply Driscoll's in Baja Mexico.
