Historian Mitchell Yockelson led a tour of American monuments, battlefields, and a cemetery in northeastern France to commemorate the centennial of several battles in May and June of 1918. The program began 60 miles from Paris at the Chateau-Thierry American Monument on a hill overlooking a small city of that name where American & French forces helped to stop a German offensive towards Paris. The tour continued a short distance away at Belleau Wood, where U.S. Marines fought Germans for three weeks. The program ended at the Aisne-Marne Cemetery, the final resting place of almost 2300 Americans who died in this region in 1918.
