This is a compilation of Apple II "Pirate Crack Screens" from several decades of Apple II programs, assembled from hundreds of thousands of screenshots generated automatically by a custom system at the Internet Archive.
After "cracking" (de-protecting) Apple II programs, some pirates would modify title screens or add additional ones crediting their achievement, giving shout-outs to other individuals and groups, and listing BBS phone numbers to call for access to more programs. These versions of the commercial programs would sometimes become the dominant versions, and would certainly be copied far and wide.
To generate this compilation, Jason Scott wrote a custom slideslow and choice system allowing quick viewing of 23,000 sets of screenshots and choosing the "crack screen", if any. The process took roughly two days over Christmas 2019. The resulting choices were then fixed for exact doubles, and then visually checked for additional doubles with minor changes. Some doubles still exist but should be a small amount. In all, over 1,100 unique crack screens are represented in this set.
