The Saddest Song in the World
The myth attached to the song "Gloomy Sunday" is that several people have committed suicide while listening to it. It was written by a Hungarian during a very bleak period for that country, and given English lyrics by Sam Lewis. Billie Holiday's version is not the first recording of the English lyric--that would be Hal Kemp in 1936--but it is the best known; maybe because Ms. Holiday was one of the world's greatest singers and her life experience taught her how to sing a song like this.
