Forum: software Subject: Why are software screenshots deleted and replaced by low quality gifs?

Is it automatic or manual?

Are there any plans to document this arcane process?

Is it OK to restore the screenshots?

I'd like to chime in and say this has been happening to my submissions as well (ones that are used with the DOSBOX emulator). More specifically, I upload a short custom well-optimized GIF of gameplay as an "attract mode" for players, but it can get automatically replaced with a generated GIF, overwriting my own GIF.

I have two issues with this: The generated GIF is automated and has no thought behind it, so it's almost entirely just the main menu or even a couple frames as a black screen. Worse, it is typically larger in filesize than my GIF.

Secondly, despite being an archival service, it removes and alters a user's submitted files without consent. While screenshots and GIFs aren't the main purpose of submission within the software category, it seems ridiculous why when the user provides files that may conflict with an automated process, the user's files are the ones overwritten (instead of the auto process simply not occurring).

I see everyone's point and I'm changing behavior going forward after this current round.

The problem with the items set to emulate is that they don't consistently get set properly, due to the complication of the system, and screenshotting is the best way to verify they actually work.

This has been a constant issue to deal with and I'm reformatting the approach to make it easier to see that someone went through the trouble of setting the screenshots in what they considered to be something accurate.
