I am sad to say that Monte has left this mortal life.

One of Monte’s neighbors in Fort Collins made two insightful comments:

“What made Monte the man he was, he was a man of his word. He was a man of honor and integrity. His moral compass was true North.”

And of course:

“We became friends and would visit at length or Monte would visit and I would listen, trying to get a word in here and there.”

Thanks again, Monte, for all you did to recreate the true sound.

Oh my. Sad news. Didn't know him, but loved his informative posts, particularly on recording shows. In his pictures and stories about his activities, he seemed to be a super healthy and happy guy.

"Death don't have no mercy in this land, in this land"

Seems a very fitting tribute.

Wow, this hits home for many of us, I'm sure. A long time contributor who always stuck to his guns no matter the feedback. A valuable resource of many things Dead-related, both technical and musical that cannot be duplicated or replaced. A truly sad day.

I will tip a glass of my finest scotch tonight to him.

Thanks for letting us know. It just hit me probably the saddest part of the ongoing thinning in these parts; so many people who need to know this may never get the chance. Please spread the word those of you who still have contact with some of the former denizens of this place. Loved the obit that was linked above (although I'm pretty sure Monte is pissed there was no mention of his connection with Alembic)

Sad news.

Here is my very, very, very, most favorite Monte Barry recording.

This is a nice one too. By the way Jerry Garcia used to hang out at Scotty's shop when in St. Louis. Maybe the most famous steel guitar shop in the world back in the day...

Thanks for letting us know. Think I'll spend some time listening to a certain concert from 73. I trust Monte is in a place where there are always great trails for riding.

Thanks for posting, and thanks for the obit; what a character he was--it brings a grin reading of those folks that knew him in person had glimpses of what we learned here in detail and learned it fast...not that I am saying we knew him "better", but it's really eye-opening to realize how much you can learn about someone IF they write a great deal.

Hmmm--yes, SDH, I think this means you could go on and on and on in eulogizing my passing, eh? On the other hand, it's a more narrow kind of knowing, to use an old cliche...

Anyhoo, sad day.

I think I want my headstone to read: "Here lies a cranky old bastard who thought he knew everything...but in the end (insert your own tasteless pun here)"

Sorry, Monte, but I'm pretty sure you'd want us to keep on being us.

Sorry to hear of the passing of a long time "Forumite", who contributed so much knowledge, and music here. RIP Mr. Barry.
