JULY 1969

TEMPTATIONS - I CAN’T GET NEXT TO YOU - July - 30
They continue in the vein of “Cloud Nine” with a “ psychedelic soul” hit . This one a #1 on both the Pop, and R&B charts .

MILES DAVIS - album - IN A SILENT WAY - July 30
This is his first full fusion album . There had been use of electric instruments in jazz before, but none by a musician of his status . This marks the beginning of his electric period .This album was the result of a long session on Feb 18 1969 . This features his, besides Davis, Wayne Shorter – soprano saxophone, Chick Corea – electric piano, and Dave Holland – bass, from his current touring band . He subbed out Jack DeJohnette for his former drummer, Tony Williams . Another former band member on board was Herbie Hancock also on electric piano . A third keyboard player Joe Zawinul, and the guitarist John McLauglin were also on the sessions .
Producer Too Macero edited these session to create a moody, beautiful, almost psychedelic work, that is not at all like the more jarring , and better known ,“Bitches Brew” recorded six months form the is recording date . He never didi anything like this again, which is a shame , as I really love this album .

SHOCKING BLUE - VENUS - JULY (NET)Nov (US)
When this came out in America, this Dutch group has a huge hit early in 1970 . It toped the charts in nine countries . This songs has many fathers, primarily “The Banjo Song” by the Big Three” (Cass Eliot’s gorp before the Mama’s & The Papas) , that is in itself “Oh Susanna”, with new music that sounds like “Money” . The opening owes just little to “Pinball Wizard” , etc. . Robbie van Leeuwen, the band's guitarist, who wrote the lyrics ,miswrote the line "...the goddess on the mountain top..." as "...the god-ness on the mountain top...", so that is way it was sung . The singer herself, was Mariska Veres, was a standout, with her Egyptian/raccoon make up and long hair (wig) .
Personal remembrance” When I was with the Boy Scouts, were were on a trio driving around in out in the desert, two or three cars . The station wagon I was in, Owned by Mr. Drown, the father of one of the scouts , Bob (RIP) . I think this is early 1970 .Were were playing the radio, and while were were parked some of us were out , some of us still in the car. “Venus” comes on . My friend Mark yells to Bob “BOB ! VENUS ! VENUS !” . What an innocent time to get excited by hearing your favorite song on the radio .
I still think it is a good single . And, I think Mariska is pretty cool, well hot, wig or not .

Grateful Dead
The band spends most of the month on tour .Colorado, Chicago, they are at the free gig at Atlanta’s Piedmont Park, up to Toronto, then NY (Flushing Meadows), then back home for a Hell’s Angels party at Longshoreman’s Hall . Continue the transition from the “Live Dead” group to the more “songs” group .

Great stuff. Thanks for the Shocking Blue Venus story. I'd forgotten that song, but loved it back then, like you and your friends.

I have always loved Silent Way. Almost like jazz trance music.

We popped In A Silent Way into the cassette deck on our drive home from Hampton 10/9/89- it was the perfect LP after that show.

I like how the strangest little things will set off memories just like that. 😀
